[i192 Linea Brown was seven years
old. To get to school, she had a long,
dangerous walk of over one kilometre to
a bus stop. There, she had to wait for the
the rest of the way. That's
if as lots of children have
to travel to school by bus. What was
surprising was that there was another
school much nearer to her home which she
wanted to go to but couldn’t. Why was
that?
The problem was that, as an African
American, Linda Brown wasn’t allowed
to attend the school near to her home as
it was for white children only. It sounds
unbelievable today but in the 1950s children
of different races were still forced to go to
different schools in the USA.
At that time, the NAACP, the National
Association for the Advancement of
Coloured People, was trying to get equal
rights for alll citizens of the USA. Its
members campaigned bravely, despite
threats of violence. They contacted Linda’s
family and twelve other families in the
town of Topeka, Kansas, and asked them to
speak out. The families put their children’s
names down for the all-white school they
lived near to. The NAACP knew that the

Bapuanry oTeera,
In 1947, there were just ten self-service
shops in the whole of the UK. The other
shops often sold just one type of product,
for instance meat or fruit and vegetables.
Some sold a variety of food but, instead
of the customers walking around the shop
and collecting the items they wanted, they
sat in a chair near the counter while a shop
assistant collected everything for them.
Supermarkets had already taken off in the
USA, though, and, in 1940, 40% of all food
there was sold in self-service shops. As
people started earning more money after
the war and different kinds of food became
available, supermarkets came to the UK, too.
Slowly, they took over. As they opened more
and more stores, the supermarkets were able
to offer lower prices. They were often large
enough to have their own car parks where
customers could park for free, unlike town
centre shops whose customers had to pay to
park or use the bus. Larger and larger stores.
opened, but often outside the town centres.
In addition to offering food, they also started
selling clothes, toys, cosmetics and other
things. People no longer needed to go to the
town centre at all. Even those who preferred
to buy their meat or bread locally soon
decided that it wasn’t worth making an extra
trip just for these few items. It was easier to
buy them in the supermarket, too.

others were less pleased. They were upset
that their town centres were now full of
closed-up shops and that they had nowhe,
to buy fresh food anymore. The elderly,
in particular, were badly affected by this.
Previously, they could walk a short distane
to the shops they needed and, perhaps
more importantly, could enjoy a friendly ch
with the shopkeeper or the assistants. This
unhappiness led to campaigns and protest
Most of these were local, trying to stop
a supermarket opening in a particular towr
‘These campaign groups had several
reasons for their protests. They represente:
farmers who were forced to sell their
food to supermarkets very cheaply. They
represented shop workers who were often
paid very poorly. They also cared about th
environment. Food sold in supermarkets
has often travelled thousands of miles to
get to the shop. Smaller shops sell much.
more locally-produced food which doesn't
need planes and lorries to transport it. This
reduces air pollution. In addition, fresh loce
produce requires less packaging. This, in
turn, means that less plastic and paper is
required so less of it ends up in our rubbis
These protests seemed to work. Thanks to
these campaigns the local food movernent

Something for the summer
More and more parents are concerned about what
‘their children eat but, when the summer comes and
the temperatures rise, there is only one thing that kids
want - a tasty ice cream or an ice lolly. One, every
now and then, is fine but when kids eat them all the
time, it means they are eating a lot of sugar. That's
why it is good to make your own ices and that has
now become a lot easier with the Zoku Quick Pop
Maker. It is easy to use and your lollies don't need
to be made the day before you want them. With the
Pop Maker, they are ready in minutes. The useful
recipe book that comes free with the machine helps you to make a wide variety of flavours
fresh fruit juice, yoghurt and other, less healthy ingredients. In fact, your kids will have as
‘a choice as in the shops. Your kids will love their daily lolly and you'll love to see them eat
healthy food. Get your Zoku Quick Pop Maker now before the summer comes.

Dear Sir/Madam,
‘A Lam writing to complain about a pair of walking boots that I bought from
your website on April 10" this year. They are the Eeze-hike boots, size 44.
Tenclose the receipt and internet advertisement.
B In your advertisement, you claim that the boots are waterproof. However,
when I went walking in the rain, my socks quickly became wet and the
walk was very uncomfortable. The boots are also not 100% leather as you
stated. They are a mixture of leather and plastic. Finally, you stated that the
boots were available in black, brown or red. I chose black but received a pair
of brown boots. .
When I phoned the contact number on your website, I was asked to wait.
I waited for ten minutes and, no sooner had my call been answered by
someone than I was asked to wait again. I hung up as the call cost 50p
a minute and decided to write instead.
D Not only would I like a refund of my money but I would also like an
apology for my inconvenience and discomfort when wearing your boots.
Unless I hear from you in the next few weeks, I will have to take further
action. I have been reading about consumer rights on the internet and
T believe I could actually request more than a simple refund if I wished to,
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Jacobs

The Year 2000 Problem
AAs the year 2000 approached, millions of
people were looking forward to the start of
the new millennium. They planned parties
and got ready to celebrate. Cities around the
globe organised fantastic firework displays
for New Year's Eve. Others, however, were far
less positive. In 1999, more and '__ people J
began to panic. They believed that as *__as
the date changed from December 31st 1999
to January 1st 2000, all clocks, computers,
and electronic systems would crash, and that
this would lead to total chaos. Some people
were ___ scared that they began buying
tinned food, bottled water and electricity
generators to survive the coming disaster.
They completely “____ their heads and were
certain there was no hope.
But why did so many people believe it was
going to be the end °____ the world? The
problem was in the way computers recognised
dates. Computers only counted the last two
digits of a number so, theoretically, they
did not know the difference between 2000
and 1900. People believed this would cause
various problems, including the collapse of
the banking system, and worse, the collapse
of defense systems that would lead to nuclear
bombs going off. Fortunately, it was just

Michael Phelps is a world-class swimmer.
He won eight medals at his first Olympics
and eight more four years later. Even more
remarkably, all eight that he won in that
second tournament were gold. With the
six gold medals he had already won, that
means he won fourteen gold medals in his
first two Olympic games. He was so much
better than anyone else that some people
believed he must be taking performance-
enhancing drugs. However, Michael was
tested nine times during his second
Olympic tournament and passed every test.
In fact, the reason for his amazing success
may be his diet.
While training, Michael eats an astonishing
12,000 calories every day. Anyone not doing
as much exercise as him would soon suffer
from serious health problems if they tried to
eat the same amount. However, for Michael it
seems that the more he eats, the faster and
fitter he becomes.
So, what exactly does he eat? Breakfast
includes eight eggs, fried onions, mayonnaise
and three chocolate pancakes. Lunch
consists of a 500g packet of pasta, ham and
cheese sandwiches and more mayonnaise as
well as eneray drinks. His third, and final meal
of the day includes another packet of pasta,
a pizza and more energy drinks. All these
calories are burned off as, between meals, he

Is this a good diet for a top-level athlete?
Not all experts are convinced but some
believe that it is. The sugar and energy dit
mean that Michael gets an immediate burst

the body starts getting energy from the
carbohydrates, allowing him to continue for
longer.
However, others question the diet's effects

Exam time is very stressful for students. It's a very
important time and they must do their best to
achieve good results. There is a lot of pressure to
succeed, and it is hard to be relaxed at this time.
Students stay up late to study and become over-
tired and anxious. The best way to prepare for
an exam is to study during the day, with regular
breaks, and then sleep for eight hours at night.

Many people suffer from hay fever. Their eyes
become itchy, watery and red, they sneeze a lot,
and their noses run or become stuffy so it is
difficult for them to breathe. Spring and autumn
are the main hay fever seasons because that
is when there is pollen from flowers in the air.
There are medicines that can help sufferers, but
