Problem 1: (15 marks)
A 60 mm long full journal bearing supports a load of 3000 N on a 60 mm diameter shaft having a
unilateral tolerance of −0.01 mm. The bearing has minimum clearance assembly for bushing bore
diameter of 60.08 mm with a unilateral tolerance of 0.03 mm. The SAE 30 oil supply is in an axial-
groove sump with a steady-state temperature of Tsump. The average film temperature of the lubricant
is 65oC
(a) Determine the shaft speed in rev/s when the minimum film thickness satisfies the minimum
friction condition.
(b) Estimate steady-state temperature of the lubricant (Tsump) and coefficient of friction.
(c) If the bearing is capable of dissipating 45 W, determine the maximum safe shaft speed. {hint:
to simplify the solution, assume that coefficient of friction of part (b) is still valid}

Problem 2: [15 marks]
The shaft of a gear reducer rotates at 1800 rpm and applies a radial load of 2.0 kN on a journal
bearing. A ratio of L/D = 1 is desired. SAE 30 oil is used. The average film temperature is expected
to be at 65°C. A minimum bearing size is desired for the maximum unit load.
a) Determine the values of L and D.
b) Determine values of c corresponding to the two edges of the optimum zone in Figure 12-16.
c) Does the value of c for minimum friction satisfy Trumpler’s criterion for minimum
acceptable film thickness?
Solution
From Table 12-5, P=1.5 MPa

Problem 3: (15 marks)
A journal bearing with a diameter of 56 mm and length 28 mm carries a load of 2.4 kN, when the
journal speed is 900 r.p.m. The shaft journal has a unilateral tolerance of −0.012 mm. The bushing
bore has a diameter of 56.05 mm with a unilateral tolerance of 0.012 mm. For the minimum
clearance assembly find the minimum oil-film thickness, the power loss, and the side flow if the
operating temperature is 65oC and SAE 40 lubricating oil is used.

Problem 4: (15 marks)
A full journal bearing have the following design specification:
Journal diameter = 30 mm with a unilateral tolerance of -0.015 mm
Bushing bore diameter = 30.05 mm with a unilateral tolerance of 0.035 mm
Length of bearing = 50 mm
Steady radial load on journal = 2.75 kN
Journal speed = 1120 rpm
Average viscosity of lubricant = 60 mPa.s
Determine the total oil flow rate for the minimum clearance assembly.
