Method Statement

This document provides instructions for installing a post-tensioned concrete slab. It describes setting up formworks, placing bottom and top reinforcement, installing post-tensioning tendons and ducts, concreting, stressing the tendons, grouting the ducts, and removing formworks. The key steps include constructing formworks, laying reinforcement and tendons, pouring and curing concrete to the required strength before stressing, using a hydraulic jack to apply tension until the designed elongation is reached, then anchoring and grouting the tendons.

INSTALLATION OF POST-TENSIONED(PT) SLAB

6.1 Shuttering of Slab

1. Supporting formworks for approximately 36m x 24m PT slab are to
be constructed at once.
2. Mould oil is coated on the formworks to prevent concrete stain on
it.
3. Shore support is provided for floor directly under PT slab to
support formwork and receive transferred load during concreting.

6.2 Placing of Bottom Reinforcement

1. Bottom reinforcement is placed in the tension zones (junction
with beams) to cater any negative bending moment.
2. Reinforcement is to be fixed in position with at least 20 mm
distance away from the edge of slab formwork.

6.3 Tendon Installation

6.3.1 Set Up of Post-stressing Tendon Components
1. Bar chairs are provided at maximum 1000mm centre to centre to
support the positioning of all ducts and tendons.
2. Ducts are laid into position and connected each other with couplings.
3. Tendons are cut to required tendon length and pushed into ducts.

6.3.2 Set Up of Stressing Anchorage Components

1. Stressing recess is added at slab edge formwork to receive
anchorage bearing plate.
2. Grout vent pipe is set up at each anchorage bearing plate.
3. Link anchorage bursting reinforcement is fixed to control
cracking caused by tensile forces during stressing.

6.3.3 Set Up of Dead End Anchorage Components

1. Onion (bulb) dead end type anchorage is used at non-stressing end of tendons.
2. Strands for each tendon will be formed with onion dead end by means of a special
hydraulic jack.

6.4 Placing of Additional/Top Reinforcement

1. Top reinforcement bars are placed at least 20 mm distance away
from the edge of slab formwork.
2. Chairs are used to support the top reinforcement bars.

6.5 Concreting
1. Sufficient number of cubes shall be taking as samples for
compressive strength testing.
2. Concrete is poured and vibrated with care.
3. Tendons are being observed during concreting to rectify
immediately if any misalignment of tendon happened.
4. Concrete should be cured till the specific strength(minimum compressive strength) has
obtained as designed before stressing.

6.6 Stressing
6.6.1 Before Stressing
1. Edge formwork of PT slab and stressing recess are removed.
2. Anchor head and wedge is placed into each strand to prevent them
from returning to original length.
3. Anchorage and strands are cleaned, measured and painted with
spray as marking points for elongation measurement
reference.

6.6.2 Installation of the Jacking Unit

1. Jacking unit is installed over the strand, at the same time ensure jack nose is in complete
contact with the surface of anchorage plate.
2. Jacking unit is aligned properly with the tendon axis and complete with pressure hoses.

6.6.3 Stressing of the Tendon

1. One-end stressing is performed by using hydraulic jack with pressure
gauge.
2. Marking is made on the strand for first 25% jack stress applied.
3. Final elongation of tendon is measured, recorded and submitted for
approval.
4. Once designed elongation is obtained, tension force is anchored by
stressing pocket and capped with non-shrink mortar.
5. Jacking unit is removed and installed onto next tendon.
6. Tendon tails are cut off at least 50 mm from anchor-head surface with
abrasive disc cutter.

6.7 Grouting
1. Water is flushed through tendons and ducts for clean pocket surface to allow better grout
flow and grout bond.
2. Quality control test is required to test the compressive strength of grout.
3. Grout is pumped into one end of vent and is allowed to flow out
from the other end to ensure the entire duct is filled with grout.
4. When all the vents have been closed, the pump pressure is observed
to check weather there is any leakage inside the duct.
5. Grout vents are cut flat to slab level with abrasive disc and any voids
found is filled.

6.8 De-shuttering of Slab

1. All formworks are struck off upon completion of PT slab.
