(USING TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING LITERATURE)
A Semestral Requirement in Modern Trends in Literature
ENG 203 SUMMER CLASS, 2020
MAR JUN D.A MPO, LPT-MA ENGLISH
Introduction
Mobile phones have become the most used and popular means of
communication and almost an essential part of our daily life. They have been
continuously spreading in every part of the world. They are everywhere. Every day we
encounter people carrying these devices from children to adults. These devices have
been a useful tool for everyone in their workplace, school, and home. A large number of
people nowadays especially students can be seen handling mobile phones on school
campuses. Mobile phones enable students to make calls and send messages, viewing
school-related materials, information gathering, and for entertainment.
The usage of mobile phones is one of the most quickly growing new technologies
in the world (Rebello, 2010). According to the recent research of the GSMA real-time
intelligence data implied by UN digital analyst estimate, people use mobile phones in at
an average of 2 hours and 51 minutes per day. There are 8.97 billion mobile
connections around the world which surpasses the current world’s population of 7.71
billion as of 2019. In addition to this, 66.53% of the world’s population owns cellphones
(bankmycell.com).
Mobile phone affects every student in different ways, these had brought
convenience to them and became one of the easiest tool used to access and get
information that is helpful in their studies. For them, the use of a mobile phone is
essential in acquiring learning.
On the other hand, communication, communication, like breathing is, so much a
part of human life that we take it for granted. And this is where the problem begins.
Communication, unlike breathing, cannot be taken for granted. People assume that they
are automatically communicating when they speak or write, but that is not always
cased. (Maslog, 1988)
Communication happens only when someone listens, and when both speaker
and listeners, or writer and reader, attach the same meanings to the words they use.
Let’s ask this question running in our minds. What is a broadcast media? These
are communication outlets that utilize air space, namely television and radio. This could
also be done using any of the technological platforms to deliver information.
Statement of Purpose
The corporation for public broadcasting (2011) indicates that technology
integration in the classrooms occurs continuously over time and follows a concise
pattern. Initially, teachers incorporate new pieces of technology into the
traditional classroom, eventually over time, they observe changes in the student’s
engagement among their peers, their behavior, and teachers then begin to
experiment with incorporating the use of technology in new and more appropriate
ways.
I propose in my class in the teaching of English literature to make a creative
presentation of the different famous writers in English literature emphasizing their
greatest contribution, famous lines maybe, including their life story with the use of
technology. The students could present it through broadcasting. In this way, they will
recall the past by inviting the different famous writers/authors imitating their physical
appearance. In doing so, they have to learn the person they are going to imitate and
everything in it. Finally, this will be presented in a broadcast media.
Plan of Action
The learners in a group will have one (1) week of preparation prior to
announcement. In the stage of preparing, they have to plan on who are these famous
writers/ authors they are going to portray or imitate, study and learn their lives and
prepare the media to be used in recording and presenting the assigned activity. From
the discussions we had, they must see to it that their presentation is in lined with the
rubrics that I gave to them on the day of the announcement of the activity. In a group,
there must be assigned team leader to monitor the progress of their group especially on
their team members, equal distribution of labor. Costumes and appropriate props are
necessary in the presentation. Recording must be in a maximum of 6 minutes.
Questions to be asked must be self-constructed and should still be connected to the
purpose of this activity; to know the different famous writers/authors in the field of
literature.
Benefits
1. Making this way, the students may ignite their interest in learning about
literature. By portraying and learning their assigned writer/author may lead
them to realize its importance.
2. Broadcasting is also an avenue to know past and to recall certain essential
achievement in history. It provides information to some other people who are
unaware of the happenings around the globe. In this creative way, the
learner’s communicative skills will enhance and somehow develop.
Additionally, this also boost their self-esteem and self-confidence.
3. In the modern trends, the technological skills of the students will also improve.
This will give them more insights on how to manipulate technology as the
most rending platforms in today’s generation.
4. Overall, the students may not only learn about literature but also have the
happiness and enjoyment that they may bring along the way in achieving their
highest goals in life.
Desired Outcomes
The objective of conducting this activity are the following:
1. to give my students a background of the following authors or writers in the
field of literature. They are open to select on the personalities that they are
going to present, know their lives especially on their contribution to better
understand literature itself.
2. to give them a chance to develop and discover their creative skills and as well
as their communication skills. This allow each one in a group to share ideas
or concepts on how are they going to present it with the use of technology.
3. to adapt the modern trends as a way of collecting essential informations. As
technology based output, this also shows their skills in stage play following its
elements.
Resources needed
In order to create a meaningful presentation, the students should undergo a full
time of understanding each of the personalities that they are going to portray. A series
of readings must require. For example, they are going to choose William Shakespeare,
Virginia Woolf, Geoffrey Chauser, George Eliot, and etc, in knowing them research is
also required. Reading books, further research, knowing the biography and learning
them is such a challenge that one must eager to accomplish.
Since time is the most important element in preparing this ouput, I will be giving
them ample time to plan, collaborate with each other in order to create a presentable
and educational play of broadcasting.
In terms of the gadget, they may use mobile phones, laptops microphones or a
video recorded camera. Costumes and props also required and the setting should be in
a broadcasting network having the its title.
Since this is recorded we are going to play it and watch it together and later ask
the students their insights or comments with regards to each group’s presentation.
Conclusion
Teaching could be more fun if your students are learning and yet enjoying.
Teaching literature is a very challenging on the part of an educator on how to instill in
the minds of their learners the various of learning that they should learned.
Broadcasting as means of communication can be a way to make your lessons more
interesting to your students. This could ignite their interest in learning the subject and
somehow to learn and discover more. At the end of this activity, they will realized the
importance of knowing the different writers/ authors in the field of literature and that
without their creative minds and vast imaginations maybe we could not read even the
most interesting stories in the world. In today’s generation, the emergence of technology
indeed gave a positive result in developing our lives aside from the bad effects it
brought to us. If we know how to use this in a more comprehensive way, we could be as
meaningful as we are possible.
