FNORM Module Setup Guide
FNORM Module Setup Guide
Overview
The FNORM module is the part of the FORAN System where rules, standards and configuration parameters
are defined for use in the rest of the structural modules. Before using the other FORAN modules it is
necessary to define the parameters in FNORM for your project.

modified. In the “variable editor” window, double click on the value of V1 and change it to zero.
7) With this change, the point P1 will automatically move
8) Now create a horizontal and vertical line through P0

12) To create the curves at the top of the notch, create V7 in the “variables editor” window as shown
13) Use the “LD: parallel line to a line at a distance” command and select the top vertical line and then press the
spacebar and enter ‐V7 as the distance (the line should appear parallel above)
14) With the “CF: circle given two tangents and radius” command create the rounded corner at P2 by first

21) This standard notch is now available in FHULL to use in the project. The variables that
were created with the notch are automatically influenced by the size of the passing
profile. Therefore the notch will always be scaled to suit the profile
22) For this example no more variable parameters will be created. Instead select the “tables”
tab to create an output table. An output table will then force the size of the notch into
certain standard sizes, determining on the size of the passing profile
23) Select the “Vi” icon to set the variable that will influence the size of the other variable
24) Select the “Vd” icon to set the variable that will be changed

position will change according to the profile thickness
28) Create two vertical lines and a horizontal line where desired to define the collar size

Task 8.5 Define a geometric standard type BV (Bevel)
Steps:
1) Select the “new parametric FNORM” icon and the “bevels” option
2) Give the new part a name and if desired a description as well 55
(The name can be up to 12 characters and the description, 40 characters)
3) Enter a 4 character symbol name too that you would like to see
appear xxxx
4) Select the options as shown
5) The bevel is automatically created with all parameters required and
is now available for use in FHULL
6) Select save

Task 8.6 Define a geometric standard type PM (Plate Macros)
Steps:
1) Select the “new parametric FNORM” icon and the “macros” option
2) Give the new part a name and if desired a description as well
(The name can be up to 12 characters and the description, 40 characters)
3) Create the following variables

Task 8.6 Define a geometric standard type PM (Plate Macros)
Steps:
5) Use the “PN: point by coordinates” command to create the three points P2, P3 and P4 shown by clicking on
the screen in the approximate locations
6) With the “GB: polyarc” command select these points in turn, starting with P1. Press the middle mouse
button to cancel the command
7) Now create these points P5, P6 and P7
8) And create a line between them

Task 8.6 Define a geometric standard type PM (Plate Macros)
Steps:
9) Create two intersection points P8 and P9, where shown
10) Create a perpendicular line through P8 using the “LC: tangent line to a circle” command
Select first the circle and then the point
Press the spacebar and then enter either LT or RT to create the tangent line
11) Create the tangent line for the other point P9

Steps:
12) Create a point P10 along the tangent line at a distance of V3 from the tangent intersection
Select point P10
Select the tangent line
Press the spacebar and enter V3
13) Create a similar point P11 for the other tangent line

Task 8.6 Define a geometric standard type PM (Plate Macros)
Steps:
15) Create a circle with radius V3 at P1
16) Now create an intersection point P12 where shown
17) It is now possible to create the contour, however as two contour lines were defined in steps 6 and 8 it is
necessary to use a different command than before – “CONT: outer contour”
First select P12
Then select the contour line from step 6
Then select the tangent line that it intersects
Continue round the shape till you arrive at P12 again, then press the middle mouse button to define the contour

10 – IMPORT / EXPORT COMMANDS
Overview
The program used for the exporting of .XML files is called Steel Transfer. It is a program integrated in FORAN
and is used to import / export information necessary for several modules.
Tasks
10.1 Adding STEEL TRANSFER to the FORAN Manager
10.2 Importing materials and geometric standards from an XML file
55
Task 10.1 Adding STEELTRANSFER to the FORAN Manager
Steps:
1) Here we want to add the facility in FORAN to import and export previously defined materials and parts
using the Steel Transfer function
2) In the FORAN Manager, select “setup” and then “add/edit program”
3) Fill in the window as shown
for “description” type something which is meaningful to the user such as “import and export program”
by default the position will be the last in the subsystem menu – this can be changed if desired
4) Select OK and the Steel Transfer utility will now be available in the “PRD”, menu in the FORAN Manager

Importing materials and geometric standards from an XML file
Task 10.2
Steps:
1) Select Steel Transfer in the FORAN manager and click OK on the pop‐up
2) Select “file” and “read doc” and select the file you want to use in your project
3) This will read the chosen XML file and it can be viewed by selecting “show doc”
4) To Import the file into the project, select the relevant program that the import is for:
FNORM, FHULL, NEST, FBUILDS or FHINFO and then select the relevant import option
5) If for example a standard plate or notch were required to be taken from an existing project for a new
project. It is possible to output the standard from the existing project and then import it the new project by
selecting:
Read doc / selecting the .xml file / show doc to check the file contents / select FNORM and IMPORT FNORM
6) The standard part will now be available in the new project and can be seen in FNORM

11 – SYSTEM PARAMETERS
Overview
The PARAMETERS menu includes the commands to configure most of the system parameters used by the
different modules in the hull structure subsystem. These are explained in detail in the user manual, as well as
the on‐line documentation. How they are applied will be detailed in each of the relevant parts of the
tutorials when required.
