Assignment 9 F - Test (B. V. Sc. & A. H. 2017 Batch)

The document contains 4 statistical problems involving testing differences between population variances using F-tests. 1) The first problem tests if the variances of two samples of weights are significantly different, and finds they are not. 2) The second problem obtains estimates of variance from two normal samples and tests if their populations have the same variance, finding no significant difference. 3) The third problem tests if the variances of time distributions from two job methods are significantly different, and does not find a significant difference. 4) The fourth problem tests if the variances of plant heights from two irrigation systems are homogeneous, and finds that they are homogeneous based on the F-calculated being less than F

Assignment 9 F - test (B. V. Sc. & A. H.

2017 batch)

1. Two independent samples of 7 and 6 items respectively had the following values of
variables.

Weights in Kg
Sa 9 1 1 1 1 9 1
mpl 1 3 1 5 2
eA
Sa 10 1 1 1 9 8
mpl 2 0 4
eB
Are these two estimates of population variance differing significantly? (for ν₁= 6 and ν₂
= 5, for F(α = 0.05) = 4.95 (Ans: no significantly difference)
2. Two random samples drawn from normal population are:

Sample I 20 16 26 27 23 22 18 24 25 19

Sample II 17 23 32 25 22 24 28 18 31 33 20 27

Obtain estimates of the populations’ variances and test whether the two populations have same
variance. (Use: Fα = 0.05 for (11, 9) d. f. = 3.12. (ans: no significantly difference)

3. Time taken by workers in performing a job by method I and method II is given below:

Meth 20 16 2 2 2 2
od I 6 7 3 2
Meth 27 33 4 3 3 3 3
od II 5 5 2 4 8
Do the data show that the variances of time distribution from population from which these
samples are drawn do not differ significantly?(Use Fα = 0.05 for )

4. The height in meters of red green plants with two types of irrigation in two fields are as
follows:

Tap water 3. 4. 2 5. 1. 2 3 4.
(X) 5 2 . 2 7 . . 2
8 6 5
Saline 1. 2. 2 4. 4 4 2
water (Y) 9 6 . 3 . .
3 2 9
Test whether the variances of the two system of irrigation are homogeneous.

(ans: Fcal = 1.2424 < Ftab at(7, 6) d. f. = 4.21 then accept H₀)
