Wellness 101 Week 2 / 3

MENTAL WELLNESS

COURSE OVERVIEW & ACTIVE DISCUSSION (10 MINUTES)


The intention of this course is to provide attendees with a starting point for general
health improvement techniques.
Discuss different types of stress (distress and eustress) and sources of stress for students.

HOW AND WHY DO WE RESPOND TO STRESSFUL


SITUATIONS? (20 MINUTES)
Review the General Adaptation Syndrome and Borysenko’s theories regarding
hormones being released during stress. Discuss autonomic and immune dysregulation
and results from these.

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: 30 MINUTES


Break into groups of 3-4 people and discuss methods to reduce stress. Instructor should
listen for discussion and hear things such as removing themselves from the situation,
taking a breath, exercise, meditation, etc. At the end of discussion, address rumination
and play Guy Winch’s Emotional First Aid Ted Talk.

MINDFULNESS EXERCISE AND REFLECTION: 15 MINUTES


Discuss mindfulness and it’s effectiveness in improving mental resiliency, resulting in
positively impact of disease regression, improved immune response, and reduced risk for
depression. Mindfulness breathing exercise

COURSE WRAP-UP (15 MINS)


Active discussion amongst students regarding stress response. Receive overall course
feedback.
