Factoring and Expanding Polynomials

The document outlines a lesson plan for a 10th grade mathematics class that focuses on teaching students how to factor and expand polynomial expressions through examples, practice problems, and step-by-step instructions, with the goal of helping students understand these algebraic operations and how they are useful for solving problems. Formative assessments include class discussions, partner work, and exit slips to check student understanding of factors, multiplication of polynomials, and factoring trinomial expressions.

- How do you factor and expand a polynomial expression?

Inquiry Question: - How are these operations useful?

GLO(s):
- Develop algebraic reasoning and number sense.
SLO(s):
- Demonstrate an understanding of factors of whole numbers by
determining the: prime factors, greatest common factor, least common
GLO(s) +SLO(s) multiple, square root, and cube root.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the multiplication of polynomial
expressions (limited to monomials, binomials, and trinomials),
concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.

factoring, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.
Students will:
- factors of whole numbers by determining the: prime factors, greatest
common factor, least common multiple, square root, and cube root.
Learning Objectives - Expand polynomials by multiplication (limited to monomials,

students to learn? binomials, and trinomials), concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.
- Solve common factors and trinomial factoring, concretely, pictorially,
and symbolically.

Assessment - Class discussion, pair conversation, step creation for notes,

students have learned? think-pair-share (formative).

Materials - Worksheets, examples, presentation/notes.

Lesson Description Time

- We will have a brief discussion about what we learned about

common factors.
Introduction - We will do an algebra tile question to get the students thinking ~5 minutes
about multiplication of binomials and then we will move on to the
new topic.

- I will give the students a area model table and give them two binomials.
We will do one together and then I will have the students do one on their
own. The students will have to deliberate how to use the model and
come up with an answer. For the second question we will do
think-pair-share.
- Then the students will get into pairs and create their own steps to solve
these types of questions. These steps will be helpful later. I will have
Body them volunteer their steps to get a general feel for the commonalities
~70 minutes
between the steps.
- Then we will move on to factoring. I will point out the relation between
factoring and expanding once again. I will teach them how to factor a
trinomial.
- We will then do some examples of factoring trinomials and then make
step creations in pairs again.

- The students will do an exit slip for me, one expanding question
Closure ~5 minutes
and one factoring question.

Reflection
Exit Slip Questions:
1. Multiply this Binomial; (x-7)(x+2)
2. Factor this Trinomial; x2+7x+6

Answers: 1. x2-5x-14 2. (x+1)(x+6)
