Completing a psychological and spiritual inventory can prove very successful in aiding
the process of self-renewal. Self-renewal is the process of finding a deeper purpose in what
you're doing so you have a strong connection and drive to the tasks you're completing. Self-
renewal in the workplace is extremely important because if you work is in line with your
values and you something pulling you towards that work, the chances are that you'll be
happier at home and work. It is important to practice self-renewal in the workplace to prevent
burnout, decide what they want to get from their careers, and find happiness in life. The best
description of self-renewal was by Tom Morris as he said "It’s the ability to keep going with a
heart inspired and eager for the work, whether that work is household cleaning, bricklaying,
business building, seeing patients all day long, or writing a book" (2016).
I proposed the following 10 questions to a co-worker to help them acknowledge the
things ongoing in their life and how to address them:
Q1) There are three spiritual pillars: relationships, strong value system, and having a
purpose. It is known that short term goals aid in eventually reaching your long-term goals and
having a purpose in life. What are your top 3 short-term priorities?
A1. Set up my house, get a routine in work, and start working out again.
This will help me feel more comfortable at home and at work with a brand-new
environment. Working out will help me relieve stress and helps me gain
confidence in myself.
Q2) List your top 3 long-term goals.
A2. Have another child, complete my Bachelor’s in Nutrition Science so I
can gain a commission in the Air Force to make more money, and buy 20 acres

somewhere in the mountains with trees so my family can live there when I
retire and be peaceful.
Q3) Each person should know what motivates them, to help them find their passion in life.
Are you driven internally or externally? Do you find ways to reward yourself for your
successes and remind yourself to learn from your mistakes?
A3. I am driven internally, and I find ways to reward myself by buying
things such as things to improve my home and life. Recently, I paid off my
truck so with the exception of my house, I do not have any debt which is a big
stressor off my back.
Q4) Stress management and its response is subjective. Some people manage their stress
gracefully and some need mental breaks from the situation (R. Pettinger, 2002). What do you
do to manage your stress?
A4. I like to have a routine and it stresses me out to not follow my routine.
Part of my routine is working out five times a week. I like to life weights in the
morning and run or use the elliptical in the afternoons. I usually try to go to
bed at a decent time so my mind can wind down and I like to read the news
before I fall asleep.
Q5) Sometimes the best cure for distress is distraction from the situation (G. Winch, 2015).
What is something that always brings you joy?
A5. My spouse usually tells stories about her day and seeing her smile or
helping her figure out a difficult situation makes me happy as well as distracts
me from the problems I am having.

Q6) Your brain is a muscle and like all other muscles, you should exercise it in order to
increase knowledge retention and cognitive abilities (BrainMD Life, 2015). What ways are
you mentally challenging yourself?
A6. I am going to school to get my bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science
and recently started a new career path that I am trying to learn and excel at. I
like to read the news to stay up-to-date on current events.
Q7) Good relationships are beneficial personally because, a good support system is key to
good health and mental stability. It is beneficial in your professional life because your co-
workers are more inclined to work as a team if there is no strife. Do you feel a strong
connection to your coworkers and workplace?
A7. No, I recently arrived and do not really know many people yet. I know
one person that I went through training with, but we are not on the same shift so I
do not see him often. I also have not gotten a sense of what the people in my
organization value yet.
Q8) Do you feel accepted and respected by people around you? Why or why not?
A8. Yes, because I am smart and share my past experiences to help people
through their mistakes. I also think that since I give people respect, it’s easier to
earn their respect.
Q9) Values are ideas in life that are important to us and vary from person to person.
Values are important because it is what drives our desires and ensures we are working toward
common goals. Some people value relationships, some value money, some value trust and
integrity, and others value social stature. Do you feel like your values line up with those of our
organization?

A9. Yes, I think my values line up with what the Air Force preaches, however
there are more people in leadership positions than not that have a self-centered focus with
a misaligned vision. They do not put their people or the needs of the Air Force first and
we are becoming more of a peacetime force without the intent of preparing our forces for
war.
Q10) How do you like to relax or wind down?
A10. I like to watch TV and cuddle.
This inventory was developed as a very generic questionnaire but can be changed and
adapted to better suit individual people or workplaces. For example, you’re your workplace
requires special skills, you may want to ask if the person is well equipped to complete their job
or ask if they’re allowed to work through problems that may arise. The findings should be
analyzed to determine how you can make changes and improvements to increase the mind-body-
spirit connection. For example, if a person realizes they’ve misaligned their priorities, they may
adjust how much time is spent at work or if they do not have a way to wind down or relax, they
might find something that reduces stress and improves their overall quality of health.
Self-renewal is the process of finding a deeper purpose in what you're doing so you
have a strong connection and drive to the tasks you're completing. Self-renewal in the
workplace is extremely important because if you work is in line with your values and you
something pulling you towards that work, the chances are that you'll be happier at home and
work. Completing a psychological and spiritual inventory can prove very successful in aiding
the process of self-renewal. During this assignment, I created a 10-question list that was
completed by a subordinate with each question leading on how they can be integrated into the
mind-body-spirit.
