OBD-II (On Board Diagnostics)
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) is a computer-controlled system originally developed to
minimize emissions by tracking the output of major components such as the engine,
catalytic converter, particulate filter, oxygen sensor, pollution(emission) control system,
fuel system, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
The basic OBD system consists of an ECU, which uses input signals from different
sensors to control the actuators to achieve the desired performance. The "Check Engine
Light," also known as a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), provides early warning of
malfunction to the driver. A modern vehicle supports hundreds of parameters that can be
accessed through the Diagnostic Connection Connector (DLC) by using external
diagnostic devices.
