Carrot Yema Candy

This document discusses plans to create a carrot yema candy. It begins by providing background on yema candy, noting that it is a Filipino dessert made from egg yolks and condensed milk. It then reviews the importance and nutritional benefits of carrots, such as improved vision, cancer prevention, and anti-aging properties. The author proposes adding carrots to yema candy to sneak vegetables into sweets since many children dislike eating vegetables. This candy could help children consume nutrients from carrots without realizing it, by combining healthy and sweet ingredients.

Carrot Yema Candy

Level 5 Punctuality

Chapter 1
Introduction

People like candy because candies are able to energize us when we are tired.
People like them because they are sweet. They say that candy should not be banned
because if we don’t have candy nothing can make us energize and feel happy.
Also, we will never have good ingredients for ice cream and more. What I like
about candy is that it make me loss the hotness of eating spicy food. Cadies can be
added to pastries and desserts to put more flavors. What candies do I like? I like all
sorts of savors. I also like the sweet ones not the sour ones. I taught about carrots
because they are healthy. They are a good ingredient for lots of dishes like soup,
salad, cake and etc. they also make good side dishes for some appetizers like
Buffalo wings. So my question, is it okay to make candy healthy? Is it okay to put
carrots in candy? Why do we need carrots in candy? We need them in candy
because it’s like eating something sweet but healthy as well. Putting carrots is
really needed because a lot of kids eat candy, but they don’t eat vegetables. So my
plan is to put something healthy on candy so that kids eat something sweet while
eating something healthy.

Definiton of Yema Candy

According to Vanjo Merano in www.panlasangpinoy.com , yema is a type of custard candy
made from egg yolks and condensed milk. This is a common Filipino dessert. Yema is a Spanish
for “egg yolk” and is most likely a reference either to tis golden-yellow appearance or to its
composition as what Serna Estrella mentioned in www.pepper.ph/yema-origins-classic-filipino-
candy/.
Yema candies and can be found even in sari sari store around the country. The most common
way of presenting this dessert is the use of colored cellophane. The mixture of is scooped and
placed inside individually cut cellophane then manually molded until the shape becomes pyramid
like. Others roll the mixture until the shape becomes spherical and place them in a small paper
cup or use some frill picks to go with it.

Origin of Yema Candy

Yema candies started in Avila, Spain back in the Middle Ages. The nuns at the Santa Teresa de
Avila convent used egg whites to starch clothing and take out red wine stains on fabric. The nuns
did not want to throw away the egg yolks and found ways to use them. Spain has yema candies
called “Yemas de Santa Teresa” (literally, “egg yolks of St. Teresa” named after the town’s
patron saint).
“The monks who also lived at the convent allegedly took the surplus yolks, beat them in
copper bowls and mixed in a syrup made up of lemon juice, cinnamon, sugar, and water to make
a sort of pastry dough.” www.pepper.ph/yema-origins-classic-filipino-candy/
Then the Spaniards conquered the Philippines after a century. They establish a lot of parishes and
built a lot of churches. The materials they used were a mix of calcium compounds or quicklime,
egg whites, and crushed eggshells to make stone walls more durable. The Filipinos were left with
a lot of egg yolks and used them in yema candies. Its either the Filipinos discovered it on their
own or the Friars introduced the “Yemas de Santa Teresa” to the Filipinos. This information was
mentioned by Serna Estrella in www.pepper.ph.
“Given the yema’s rather literal moniker, egg yolks remained the candy’s primary
ingredient for quite a while after it was first produced in the country. Milk was added to the
mixture most likely after Filipinos learned to boil milk to bring out a sweeter, creamier taste.
Another theory also states that the dairy product might have entered the picture after the
Aericans came in and introduce the canning process and by extension, canned condensed milk.”

Importance and Nutritional Facts of Carrots

“The carrot is a plant with a thick, fleshly, deeply colored root that grows underground and
feathery greenleaves that emerge above ground. Carrots belong to the Umbelliferae family,
named after the umbrella-like flower clusters common to plants in this family, including
parsnips, parsley, fennel and dill. These are more than a hundred diferrent varieties of carrot
that vary in size and color. Carrots can be as short as 2 inches or as long as 3 feet, ranging in
diameter from ½ inch to over 2 inches. Carrot roots have a crunchy texture and a sweet, minty,
aromatic taste, while the greens are fresh-tasting and slightly bitter. While carrots are generally
associated with the color orange, they also grow in a host of other colors, including white,
yellow, red and purple, the last being the color of the original variety.” – Dr. Michael T.
Murray, ND, Naturopathic Medicine.

Parents need carrots in candy because children hates (some does like) eating vegetables.
Parents really need carrots in candy because when the kids eat the candy they don’t know what
the main ingredient is. My explanation is that children need to eat healthy food while eating
something sweet. In eating yema carrot candy, children get the nutrients from carrots without
knowing it.
