Project: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON BIOGEOCHEMICAL CEMENTATION OF SAND

A novel and environmentally sustainable ground improvement technique, “Microbial Induced

Calcite Precipitation (MICP)”, was applied in this study for improving the behaviour of sand using
Urea Hydrolysis process. Strength studies like Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) & Direct
Shear Tests (DST) and microstructural analyses like X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning
Electron Microscope (SEM) studies were performed to study the effectiveness of the technique. The
volume change behaviour of the untreated and treated materials were studied. The leaching study
was carried out in order to understand the stability of the material after treatment under the constant
flowing conditions.
