1. Which of the OSI layers handles each of the following: (a) Dividing the transmitted
bit stream into frames. (b) Determining which route through the subnet to use.
(10 marks)
2. An image is 1024x768 pixels with 3 bytes/pixel. Assume the image is uncompressed.
How long does it take to transmit it over a 56-kbps modem channel? Over a 1-Mbps
cable modem? Over a 10-Mbps Ethernet? Over 100-Mbps Ethernet? (10 marks)
3. A digital signaling system is required to operate at 9600bps. (10 marks)
(a) If a signal element encodes a 4-bit word, what is the minimum required bandwidth
of the channel if we assume a noise free system?
(b) Repeat part (a) for the case of 8-bit words.
4. The following waveform belongs to a Manchester encoded binary data stream.
Determine the beginning and end of bit periods (i.e., extract clock information) and
give the data sequence. (10 marks)
5. We have a message D = 1010001101 (10 bits). Using a predetermined divisor P =
110011 (6 bits), please find the FCS (frame check sequence) using CRC technique.
(10
marks)
6. In Sliding-Window flow control, suppose k bits are used to specify the sequence
numbers of frames. It can support the range of sequence numbers from 0 to 2 k-1.
Explain, by an example, why the maximum window size can not exceed 2k-1.
(10 marks)
7. A channel has a data rate of R bps and a propagation delay of t s/km. The distance
between the sending and receiving nodes is L km. Nodes exchange fixed-size frames
of B bits.
What is the propagation time?
(2 marks)
What is the frame transmission time?
(2 marks)
How to set the window size to achieve the maximum channel utilization in the
Sliding-Window flow control?
(8 marks)
8. Suppose Selective-reject ARQ is employed in error control. Explain, by example,
how to deal with the case that RR message is damaged.
(10 marks)
9. Explain the basic idea of the Statistical Time Division Multiplexing.
(4 marks)
10. A disadvantage of the contention approach for LANs is the capacity wasted due to
multiple stations attempting to access the channel at the same time. Suppose that time is
divided into discrete slots, with each of N stations attempting to transmit with probability
p during each slot. There is no collision detection. What fraction of slots are wasted due
to multiple simultaneous transmission attempts?
(10 marks)
11. What are the main differences between hub, bridge, and lay-2 Ethernet switch?
(2 marks)
12. Why cannot Wireless LAN use CSMA/CD?
(2 marks)
