A SELF-REFLECTION CENTRE
02
2020
SPIRITUAL

Year : 2020 Course : Architectural Design

Location : UNSW, Sydney Studio 2
Type : Academic / Individual Specialization : High Performance
Program : Spiritual Tutor : Andrew Guidry
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT 02
SPIRITUAL
The High Performance design studio was fo-
cused on creating a new and more exclusive
faith and spiritual centre for the campus of the
University of New South Wales to be used by
the growing diversity of students that study
there. There was also a need to create a self
sufficient space which would touch the earth
lightly and would aim to function as a net zero
energy building.
The design developed from the idea of self re-
flecting upon one self to promote self growth,
instead of segregating the design spaces which
would cater to different faiths individually. This 1 4
self reflection would be promoted through a
journey within the design created by varying
volumes of introverted and extroverted spac-
es, which the user would be free to go to as per
their preference.

These introverted and extroverted spaces were

enhanced with the use of materials which
helped create a sense of openness or a sense
of enclosure catering to the moods of the user.
The intangible presence of light depending on
the volume of the space and the time of the day 2 5
helped in giving the user a changing experience
as they moved through the design.

The materiality for the design was inspired from

studying the thermal regulation within different
animals which would help to store or discard
heat within the building necessitated by the
need for the climate.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT 03
HEALTHCARE
When you think of working out, you proba-
bly envision hitting the gym. But what if the
gym was at your doorstep, right outside. A
place in nature, a place in your own com-
munity, where you have varied choices of
workouts as opposed to the same old in-
door gym equipment. A place where you
can breathe the fresh air unlike the stale
sweaty atmosphere of an enclosed gym.
A place which is booming with flora and
fauna, and every aspect of the place instils
a form of freshness in you, physically and
mentally. This idea raised the research
question:

‘Can a city’s green public space be utilised

to improve the physical health of its citizens
through the natural environment?”
The Urban Conditions Studio, placed in
Waterloo’s social housing precinct, neces-
sitated a regional approach, aimed at re-
viving the area’s lost biodiversity, creating
an environment of social health and well
being alongside, providing people with an
outdoor as well as an indoor, aquatic and
fitness space. R

It gave people an opportunity to freely T

workout in the outdoors while reminding

them of the rich diverseness of species
that used to thrive in the swamp area of
Waterloo before the industrialization peri-
od, prompting them of the health benefits
of exercising outside and also aimed to ad-
dress the existing issues of drug abuse and
mental health problems of people living in
this low income social housing community.

ARTHEART & CULTURAL CENTRE
04
2018
CULTURAL / PUBLIC

Year : 2018 Course : Architectural Design

Location : Parramatta, NSW Studio 2
Type : Academic / Individual Specialization : Urban Conditions
Program : Cultural / Public Tutor : Sam Marshall
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT 04
CULTURAL / PUBLIC

The Urban Conditions studio was

about designing contemporary art
spaces in the heart of the Parramatta
urban precinct, soon to be Sydney’s 2nd
business district. It was a constrained
existing car parking site in the midst
of heritage, businesses, restaurants &
office buildings, narrow service streets
along the inner and busy car streets
along the outer perimeter, with the
Horwood place street soon to be the
new Parramatta civic link.

The biggest challenge of the site to

avoid social exclusion from its sur-
roundings & bringing the public realm
of the civic link into the site became
the driving factor of the design. Con-
necting the two main entrances of the
site via a street link lead the people in
to have a glimpse of the cultural activ-
ities taking place within the building.
Series of public activities like cafes,
temporary gallery spaces, public pla-
zas, retail spaces and the main art gal-
lery space located on the lower levels
kept the public activities close to the
street level for easy access. A public
roof theatre was also located on the
5th level.

Responding to the future vision of

Parramatta, the design was to fit into
the skyscraper context, and an elegant
curving facade wrapped the main art-
ist studios and their residences at the
higher storeys.

CULTURAL INTERACTION CENTRE

2016
CULTURAL / SPIRITUAL

Year : 2016 Course : Undergraduate

Location : Dockyard, Mumbai Thesis
Type : Academic / Individual Specialization : Refurbishment
Program : Cultural/Spiritual Tutor : Suprio Bhattacharjee
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT 05
CULTURAL / SPIRITUAL

The centre is a proposal for a cultural and recreational hub in a post indus-
trial and populated residential neighbourhood which lacks public spaces,
giving an opportunity to the people of the locality to find some breathing
space in the city’s busy urban fabric.

The site selected was an old dysfunctional mill lying in a dilapidated con-
dition which also acted as the inspiration for the design. Retaining some
of the structures and walls which were fit for use and regenerating an
existing water body helped maintain the cultural heritage of the site and
introducing a grid of open spaces around them.

The programs included in the cultural centre were broadly an activity zone
with lecture halls, workshops and recreational spaces, a permanent exhibi-
tion space consisting of various galleries, an auditorium contained within
the mill shed, an information centre consisting of a public library, cafete-
ria and restaurants for income generation and a socio-cultural interaction
platform.

A large central courtyard was the initial thought for the design which ad-
dressed site issues of ventilation, lighting and ease of circulation. From
that generated the need of providing every function with its own court-
yards which ensured a steady functioning of multiple activities at the cen-
tre simultaneously.
