Failure to Thrive in Children: Causes & Management

Failure to thrive is a chronic life-threatening disorder in infants and children characterized by inadequate growth or weight gain resulting from an inability to obtain or use sufficient calories for growth. Common causes include organic factors like malnutrition, infection, or genetic disorders as well as environmental and psychological factors such as poverty, poor social support, or disturbed parent-child relationships. Children with failure to thrive often exhibit delayed development, reduced muscle and fat stores, listlessness, and signs of physical and emotional deprivation. Treatment focuses on reversing the underlying causes through correcting malnutrition, addressing any organic issues, providing family support, and modifying caregiver behavior.
