Case Study on Business Ethics
By Jet Aedrinne R. Purugganan
In the workplace, there are occasional tensions and conflicts. There are various ways to
resolve minor or major problems within the workplace and with fellow workers. However, the
wrong approaches to these problems may be considered unethical.
The technical leader’s actions his actions were completely unnecessary and unethical.
Although Diane committed a code update that introduced a timing glitch in the prototype shortly
before a live demo, not allowing Diane to join the team stage was unfair and unprofessional.
Being a leader, he should have instructed Diane on how to not commit the same mistake in order
for her to improve because that is the job of a leader. A leader should strive for the betterment of
everyone working under their wing. He has also had a history of morally incorrect behavior such
as erupting with verbal attacks and discrediting rightful contributors who are women and these
are examples of breaches on moral conduct. This means that he has violated multiple ethical
conducts. A possible solution of this problem is reporting to other authorities. Diane reported the
incident to the team’s manager and although she agreed the experience was unpleasant, she also
stated that she should grow up and get over it which is simply immoral. Not taking action against
someone who is deserving of it is adding fuel to the fire. You are letting a worker work in unfair
conditions just because you are under an industry leading team. If the foundation of a team is
built under unprofessionalism and fear then failure is imminent regardless of what success the
team has been able to achieve. Diane committed a minor mistake and she should be more
cautious the next time around. Max might be skilled but what is the purpose of a brain without
proper values? He should treat others how they deserve to be treated. If he fails to do so, he
should not be working anymore. Jean should take rightful action against those who have done
immoralities for she is the team manager.
The business should reassess their ways of operating and the people within it should
know how to treat each other with respect. They should find ways of resolving their conflicts that
don’t require verbal attacks and discreditation. A team built on a rocky foundation is always
prone to crumbling and at the end of the day, morals will trump short lived successes.
