2 Where are they now?
Our Oxford trip
sme and | visited Oxford yesterday, and we saw an amazing
art exhibition while we were there its called ‘Ghost Forest”
‘and i's an installation often rainforest trees. The trees once
‘grew in a West African forest, which is being cut down for
‘wood. However, these ten trees came to a natural end after
being blown down in tropical storms.
he artist Angela Palmer decided to transport the trees to Europe, so that people who will never go to the
rainforest can experience these huge ‘natural sculptures’ in their own country. These trees usually grow
‘over 30 metres high and their wood is used in many different ways, from making toys and furniture to building
boats. it was incredible to see, smell and touch them.
‘ter traveling the 3,000 miles from Ghana, the trees were displayed in London and Copenhagen. When
1e Oxford exhibition finishes, Angela's plan is to transport them to other countries, such as Japan and.
Australia. Tis is because Angela's project aims to increase global awareness of the problem of deforestation.
‘At the moment, rainforest trees are cut down so rapidly that an area the size of a football pitch disappears.
‘every four seconds! If we carry on as we are, our tropical forests will be lost in less than half a century. Angela
hopes ‘Ghost Forest’ will make people understand this terible problem.
his year is the UN's International Year of Forests, when governments around the globe hope to reach across
borders and unite people in looking after the world's forests. In my opinion, the ‘Ghost Forest’ exhibition wil
help to achieve this aim. The installation was really powerful and the politcal meaning was communicated very
clearly. | know that deforestation can't be stopped completely, but seeing these incredible trees inspired me to
