WARNING : The change of a BSI under guarantee is subject to a request for

approval from your Technical Assistance team.

2 Contacting your Assistance team

2.1 Introduction

Before contacting Assistance, please be ready with the following elements:

• Nos. of the procedures implemented (G01 to G11),
• The sequence used (S0x),
• The stage you have reached (depends on the procedure being used).

2.2 Example of the type of information you need to provide

You have implemented procedure G10 (Wipers), sequence S06 corresponding to

« Check on the rear screen wiper function » and you have arrived at stage N° 2.1 in
the flow chart.
You will say to your contact : G10 - S06 - 2.1.

3 Recommendations - precautions

Before any consequent operation, it is essential to check :

• the battery voltage,
• the fuses,
• that the shunt is correctly positioned on the BSI (the shunt should be in the
“Customer” position),
• that the BSI is not in back-up mode (see : “Preliminary checks on the BSI” below).

Page 4 / 11
4 Functions

To indicate to the driver that the oil level is correct, the BSI calculates the level to be
displayed, from four measurements of the oil level.
The oil level is measured each time you switch on the ignition, this being confirmed
by an « Oil » warning lamp.

4.1 Features of the « Oil » warning lamp

Features of the warning lamp « Oil » :

• Citroën C4 : the « Oil » warning lamp is located on the instrument panel below the
indication of distance/speed,
• New Look C5: the « Oil » warning lamp is a display on the odometer, following the
display of the mileage remaining to the next service.

4.2 Features of measuring the oil level

The measuring of the oil level is done by the injection ECU on :

§ 2.0 petrol engine (Engine plate : RFJ)
§ 1.4 petrol engine (Engine plate : KFU)

On other engine versions, the oil level is measured by the Engine Relay Unit (BSM).

4.3 Checking instructions

To guarantee the validity of the indication of oil level, apart from when on economy
mode, perform the following operations :
• Switch on the ignition (without starting the engine),
• Wait 15 seconds,
• Switch off the ignition,
• Wait at least 3 minutes (without opening the doors or leaving any doors open) in
order to allow the BSI to go to sleep,
• Switch on the ignition (without starting the engine),
• Note the behaviour of the « Oil » warning lamp on the instrument panel.

Page 5 / 11
Display by the « OIL » warning lamp Possible causes
Flashing display of « OIL ». Oil level a lert.
• Oil level too low (0% to 11%).
• Oil level too high (over 100%, oil
level above the maximum level on
the manual gauge).
Fixed display of « OIL -- ». Oil level in process of being measured.
Fixed display of « OIL OK » Oil level between 12% and 100%.
Flashing display of « OIL -- ». Display invalid (measurement problem).

if « OIL » is flashing, the message « Engine oil level alert » appears on the
multifunction screen.

5 Configuration

A certain number of configuration parameters are memorised in the BSI :

• parameter « Oil level sensor option » (Absent / Present),

• one parameter relates to the engine version :
• Citroën C4 : parameter « Selection of engine oil gauge table »
(2.0 16V (138hp) petrol, 1.6 16V petrol, 2.0 16V (180hp) petrol,
1.4 16V petrol, 2.0 16V (143hp) petrol, 1.6 HDi, 2.0 16V HDi).
• Citroën New Look C5: parameter « Oil gauge law – engine version »
(3.0 (V6) petrol, 2.0 petrol, 1.8 petrol, 2.0 HDi, 1.6 HDi, 2.2 HDi),
• parameter « Origin of the oil level information » (Engine Relay Unit, Engine ECU),
• parameter « Condition of oil level measuring » (Engine stopped, Engine running ).

You can access the parameters after starting communication with the BSI using a
diagnostic tool and selecting the menu « MANUAL PROGRAMMING» then
« CONFIGURATION », « OIL LEVEL GAUGE LAW ».

Stage 1
Identification of a BSI in back-up mode:

- First case: When the ignition is switched on and the lighting stalk is in position
0, the vehicle’s sidelamps (front or rear or both) come on.

- Second case: With the engine running, the dipped beam headlamps come on,
the windscreen wiper operates in intermittent wipe or in slow speed.
