MEANING OF
FORMALISM APPROACH
Formalism Approach
Formalism may be defined as a
critical approach in which the text
under discussion is considered
primarily as a structure of words. That
is, the main focus is on the
arrangement of language, rather than
on the implications of the words, or on
the biographical and historical
relevance of the work in question.

QUERIDA
Angela Manalang Gloria
“The door is closed, the curtains drawn within
One room, a brilliant question mark of light…
Outside her gate an empty limousine
Waits in the brimming emptiness of night.”
In this essay I would like to speculate about the ways in which the distinctive poetic accomplishments of Angela
Manalang Gloria (1907-95) and Edith Tiempo (1919-2011) might be said to arise from an elective affinity to form. I
hope to place my notion of form within a general poetics, mindful that any such attempt must retain awareness of the
rootedness of writing in the circumstances of specific lives and societies, whose literary cultures lend themselves to the
abstraction of poetics only in the sense that “the theory of poetry is the theory of life” (Stevens 486), and a theory of
life is never lived in abstraction. Their elective affinity for form differed in kind and degree, but each has come to
represent a distinct stage in the growth of self-confidence and authority in Filipino writing. Each also presents
formalism as the outcome of an interaction between individual temperament and literary culture, such that the relation
between the individual and the tradition remains significant in several discursive fields: national, colonial, postcolonial,
cosmopolitan, and global. For those who write poetry in the Philippines, such formalisms constitute a legacy whose long
shadow impels poets less to emulation than to a search for roads not taken before.or anyone interested in poetry, the
significance of such formalisms is the scope revealed and the limits uncovered in the attempt by these two poets to
reach through the local to the universal without giving up the quiddity without which poetry degenerates into verse and
worse.

QUERIDA
On the tittle querida means a

regretting what she have done and chiefly Southwest
questioning her self on something : a female sweetheart
she might ruin she's not even free
she only live in a room waiting for According to Merriam Webster
the person to come and complete
her night and querida have many
meaning but as a Pilipino I'll stand
in the position mistress in
Philippines the man she likes is
rich and has wife that's why she's
hiding in a room like it was her
cage and can't be happy without
the person she like.
ABOUT
This poem is about a
branded woman if you
won't consider the meaning
of the tittle.

ABOUT
A kind of discrimination which is predominant at the
time this very poem was written. The poet was sort of
like discriminated as well during her time, having her
works ignored and all. But as they say, it takes a
strong woman to speak her mind. Writing about
"immoral" topics during those times opened an
avenue to a broader perspective. Having this poem
written by a female herself is indeed just because
more than anyone else, a woman would understand
another.
