Lesson Plan Outline
2D Shapes & Triangle
Teacher: Jennica Quenville Class & Grade: Kindergarten
Date & Time: November 3rd, 2020 Topic/Subject(s): Math
Learning Intentions
“I can identify a triangle ”
“I know that 2D shapes are flat and have 2 faces”
Lesson Overview Students are introduced to what 2D shapes are and the triangle shape.
This will be done through a triangle puppet! The students then go on a
scavenger hunt for triangles.
Curriculum connections Big idea: Objects have attributes that can be described, measured, and
compared.
Core competencies:
- Communication & thinking
Curriculum competencies:
- Represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial, and
symbolic forms.
- Communicate mathematical thinking in many ways.
- Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.
Content: S ingle attributes of 2D shapes.
Lesson: Step by Step
Time & Description & Adaptations Equipment/Materials
Activity Needed
Intro: Intro: The various 2D shapes
made into puppets (with a
Teacher (T) tells the students to all come to circle - there is popsicle stick).
someone I want to introduce them to.
3-5 min ● Students sit down at the circle.
T pulls out Tommy Triangle and tells students that Tommy
Triangle really wants to teach the students all about something
called 2D shapes.
Tommy: “Hi everyone! I’m here to talk to you about shapes,
raise your hand if you know the name of a shape”
● Students raise hands and share about what shapes they
know.
Body of Tommy: “Today I am going to tell you all about 2D shapes
Lesson because they are my favourite! Do you know 2D shapes are my
favourite?! Because I am a 2D shape”
Tommy: “A 2D shape is flat and has two faces (turn him around
to show his other face on the back), which means I have two
spots that are flat. Do you think you are a 2D shape?”
● Students respond and Tommy clarifies. They are not 2D
10 min because they are not flat!
T: Holds a paper and asks the class how about this paper, is it a
2D shape? Yes! (because it’s flat and has 2 faces, show both
sides).
T: “You know what Tommy, I heard that there are all different
types of 2D shapes!”
Tommy: “There sure are and over the next month you are going
to learn about all the different types, but first we start with the
best one - the triangle - ME! Ms. Q can you draw a triangle for
me?”
T: Draws a triangle on the white board (Tommy: All triangles
have 3 sides. The sides are the straight, flat parts of the triangle
(use a different colour marker to outline the sides). All triangles
have 3 corners, which are the pointy parts of the shape (use a
different colour marker to put dots on the corners)
T: Raise your hand if someone can show us the SIDES on
Tommy the triangle (student comes up and points to the sides on
Tommy). Raise your hand if someone can show us the
CORNERS on Tommy.
T: After I’m done speaking you are going to go back to your
table and at your table you are going to have this worksheet. (Go
through the worksheet with the students and show them what to
do).
The worksheet involves
T: Sends students back to the desk - T passes out the worksheets. tracing, drawing, and
identifying triangles.
Activity Students (S) will begin their worksheet. The teachers will walk
around and help support the students. Students will be asked to
15 min raise their hands when they need help.
Closure
Tommy: I saw all of you draw some beautiful triangles. Keep up
2 min the good work and trying to get those lines straight! Tomorrow
you are going to meet my friend the square.
