Considering φ 25 in transverse direction and φ 20
in longitudinal direction.

a = distance of cg of brg. from face of inscribed square

b= 2610 mm

deff = 1728 mm

a/d = 0.0/1727.5 = 0.000 <1 DESIGN AS A CORBEL

Hence the pier cap has been designed as a bracket.

The design has been done as per "Design proposal for reinforced concrete corbels" by A.H.Mattock.

Dead load reaction coming on corbel = 51.61 t

Live load reaction with impact on one bearing = 58.69 t

Self weight of corbel = 5.17 t

Dead load + Live load with impact acting on the bearing = 115.47 t

Ultimate force , Vu = 1.4*(51.61+5.1678)+1.7*58.69 = 179.27 t

as per load factors given by
For Pot-Ptfe bearings, µ = 0.05 ACI-4
REACTION FACTOR= 0.564
Nuc = 8.96 t Impact Factor= 1.18
0.2Vu= 35.85 t e= 1.155
Design value of Hu = 35.85 t

CHECK FOR NOMINAL SHEAR STRENGTH :

φ = 0.85

Vu/φ bd = 179.27/ (0.85 *2.610*1.728)

= 46.78 t/m^2

0.2Fc' = 0.2*0.8*3000
= 480 t/m^2 hence o.k

1. CALCULATION FOR SHEAR FRICTION REINFORCEMENT :

Avf = Vu/µ*φ*fy)
= 179.27/(1.4*0.85*5.0) (µ=1.4 for concrete placed monolithically
= 30.13 cm2 across interface)
Refer Clause 11.9.3.3

2. CALCULATION OF FLEXURE REINFORCEMENT :

Mu = Vu*a+Hu*(d-deff) = 179.27*0.00/1000+35.85*(1800-1727.5)/1000 = 2.60 tm

Af = Mu/(φ*fy*(.8deff) ) = 2.60*100/(C66*500*(0.8*1.728) = 0.44 cm2

[ where x= depth of rectangular stress block,
assume x = 0.67
DEPTH OF RECTANGULAR BLOCK

x = Af * Fy/f*fc'*b = 0.4*500/(0.85*0.8*35*261)
= 0.04 cm so.ok.

3. CALCULATION FOR HORIZONTAL TENSILE STEEL

2
At = Hu/(φ*fy)= 35.85/0.85*5.0 = 8.4 cm

2
2/3Avf = 2/3*30.1 20.1 cm
Af > 2/3 Avf
2
Therefore, Af = 20.09 cm

Min As as per clause 11.9.5 of ACI-4

= 0.04*fc'*b*d/fy
= 0.04*0.8*300*261.0*172.8/5000
= 136.89 cm2

CALCULATION FOR TORSIONAL STEEL

In flexural steel , reinforcement due to torsion is to be added also and then compared with minimum
steel requirement.

Torsion due to horizontal force as a result of the live load reaction coming on the bearing.
Horizontal force = 2.93 t
Bending moment = 3.41 t-m
Ultimate torsion = 5.79 t-m
X = 1.80 m
Y = 2.61 m
x = 70.866 inches
y = 102.756 inches
Σ x2*y = 516041.2
fc' = 240 Kg/cm2
= 3415.2 psi
Tu = φ*(0.5*(fc')^0.5*Σ x2*y) = 12816852.0 lb inch
= 147.52 t-m > 5.79 t-m
(Thus rienforcement is provided to cater to the
effect of full torsion, neglecting the effect of
concrete)
At/s = Tu/(at*x*y*fy), where,
at = 0.66+0.33*y/x = 1.1385
At/s = 0.0217 inch2/inch
= 5.51 cm2/m
Longitudinal reinforcement as per ACI :
At = 2*At*(X1+Y1)/s = 22.68 cm2

Providing 10.0 cm2 at top & 5.0 cm2 at bottom.

Total steel = 30.09cm2 which is more than the min.steel requirement

= 136.89 cm^2 per 2.61 m

Hence As design = 136.89 cm^2

Provide 22 nos 20 φ
Area of Steel provided = 69.12 cm2

σcbc = 11.67 N/mm2 fy = 240 N/mm2
m = 10 k = 0.327
j = 0.891 Q = 1.700

Moment of resistance of stopper = Q b d2 = 1.700 x 800 x 740 ^2

= 74.5 > 18.3 tm OK

Area of steel required = 18.3 x 107 = 769 mm

Provide 4 nos of 32mm dia bars on the face near to x-diaphragm (Ast = 2946 Sq.mm) OK

Provide 6nos of 12mm dia bars on the other face. (Ast = 679 Sq.mm)

(c) Check for Shear Stress

Shear force Vu = 26.1 t
Percentage of steel, p = 100 x 2946 0.50 %
800 x 740
Shear Stress :
tv = 10000 x 26 = 0.441
800 x 740

Here, Asx100/ bxd = 0.498 For Asx100/bxd = 0.25 τc = 0.23

For Asx100/bxd = 0.50 τc = 0.31
So,for Asx100/ bxd = 0.498 τc = 0.309

From IRC:21-2000, Table 12B and C,

Permissible Shear Stress, τc = 0.309 and K = 1.0 (for overall depth of cap is greater than 300mm)
So, permissible shear stress, = K x τc = 0.309
So, Shear reinforcement is required

Assume Shear Reinforcement provided @ 100 mm spacing along the length of restrainer.

Shear Reinforcement shall be provided to carry a shear Vs = V - τc x b x d

= 260.8 - 0.309 x 0.740 x 1000 = 32 kN

Shear Reinforcement Required = 32.0 x 1000 x 100 = 18.0 mm

Provide 4L 12mm dia. bars 100 mm A= 452 mm2

along the Length of restrainer.

Spacing required = 452 x 240 x 740

32 x 1000

Design of Longitudinal Seismic Restrainer :

(a) Design data

Horizontal seismic force Vu = 26.1 t [P] 26.1 t
Width of the restrainer, b = 0.80 m 0.7 m
Thickness of the restrainer, d = 0.80 m
m Elevation
Height of restrainer = 1.61 m

Grade of concrete = M 35
Grade of reinforcing steel = Fe 415
(800x800)
(b) Check for Flexure Plan

Total Horizontal force = 26.1 + 0.0 = 26.1 t

Horizontal force per stopper = 26.08 / 1 = 26.1 t

Moment at the base of stopper = 26.1 x 0.700 = 18.3 tm

Size of stopper = 0.80 x 0.80

For Asx100/bxd = 0.00 τc = 0.54
