Electronic Components and Their Symbols

This document provides information about common electronic components and their symbols. It lists components such as batteries, LEDs, resistors, potentiometers, photocells, diodes, capacitors, transistors, switches, speakers, transformers, and integrated circuits. For each component, it gives a brief description and shows the electrical symbol. The purpose is to introduce basic circuit elements and their representations.

Electronic Components and their symbols

Name Part Symbol

Battery - a portable power source.
Most circuit that we will work with
use 9 volts.

LED - (Light Emitting Diode) An

LED gives off light when
electricity flows through it. It has
a positive (anode) and negative
(cathode) side to it. It will not
work if put in backwards.
Resistor - a component used to
control the amount of electricity
flowing in a circuit.

Potentiometer - variable resistor,

as you turn the knob, the
resistance changes from 0 ohms
(no resistance) to it’s maximum
value (lots of resistance)

Photocell - a special kind of

resistor that reacts to light. The
more light that hits it, the less
resistance it has.

Diode - a diode is a device that

allows current to flow through it in
ONE direction only. There are two
Leads. The anode and cathode.
SCR - allows current to flow
through it ONLY after a positive
voltage is applied to the gate.

Disc Capacitor - a device used to

store energy much like a battery.
Can be charged and discharged
over and over. A
Ceramic capacitor stores small
amounts of energy.

Electrolytic Capacitor - a device

used to store energy much like a
battery. Can be charged and
discharged over and over.
Electrolytic capacitors store large
amounts of electricity. Has a
positive and negative like a
battery.
NPN Transistor - the transistor
works as a current amplifier. It
uses a small base current to
control a larger current.

PNP Transistor - the transistor

works as a current amplifier. It
uses a small base current to
control a larger current.

Push Switch - a device that is

used to turn ON and OFF the flow
of electricity to a circuit. A switch
is either open or closed. When a
switch is closed, the electricity
flows.

Toggle Switch - a device that is

used to turn ON and OFF the flow
of electricity to a circuit. A switch
is either open or closed. When a
switch is closed, the electricity
flows.

Touch Switch - two pieces of wire

so that when you touch them with
your finger it completes a circuit
for electricity to flow.

Speaker - A pulsating device that

converts electricity into sound
waves.

Audio Transformer - An electrical

device that either raises or lowers
the voltage of electricity

Integrated Circuit - a divice that

has several components
(transistors, resistors, capacitors,
diodes, etc) condensed into a very
small package. Each IC performs
differently according to what is
inside.
