safety hazards, damage the EZCT, or cause errors in the test results; Vanguard Instruments Co.,
Inc. assumes no liability for unsafe or improper use of the EZCT.
The following safety precautions must be observed during all phases of test set-up, test hookups,
testing, and test-lead disconnects.

SAFETY WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS

This device shall be used only by trained operators.
All Current Transformers under test shall be off line and fully isolated.

Always ground the EZCTand EZCT-10to a substation ground

before connecting the test cables to a transformer.

Precaution with High Test Voltage

Because the EZCT can produce a voltage up to 1,200Vac, this high voltage can cause severe
injury, death, and/or equipment damage. The device shall be used only by trained operators.

Do Not Test Current Transformers in Circuit

Never attempt to test any Current Transformer still connected to a circuit. All Current
Transformer terminals shall be isolated before conducting any test with the EZCT.

Do Not Modify Test Equipment

Because of the risk of introducing unknown hazards, do not install substitute parts or perform
any unauthorized modification to any Model EZCT Test unit. To ensure that all designed safety
features are maintained, it is recommended that repairs be performed only by Vanguard
Instruments Co. factory personnel or by an authorized repair service. Unauthorized
modifications can cause serious safety hazards and will nullify the manufacturer's warranty.

1.2.General Description
The EZCT is a microprocessor based current transformer (CT) test set. This rugged yet portable
test set measures CT excitation voltage and current, turns ratio, and winding polarity on single or
multi-ratio current transformers.
The EZCT provides a variable AC test voltage up to 1,200Vac for the CT excitation test. Test
voltage and excitation current readings are displayed on the LCD and recorded during a test.
Once the test is completed, users can print the CT excitation curves and test data and/or save the
test results in FLASH EEPROM.
The CT turns ratio is determined by dividing the measured excitation voltage applied to the CT
secondary winding by the induced voltage measured on the CT primary winding.

The EZCT has a 16-key pushbutton pad for entering test parameters and control functions. Test
voltage is raised or lowered by a Voltage Control knob. A 4-line by 20-character LCD readout is
used for displaying control-option menus and test data. The EZCT has a built-in thermal printer,
for printing test data on 4.5-inch-wide thermal sensitive paper.

The EZCT can be used in the stand-alone-mode or in the computer-control mode. In stand-alone
mode, all tests are conducted from the EZCT front panel. Operation only requires connecting the
test leads to the current transformer primary and secondary windings and following the test
sequence displayed on the LCD. Knee point voltages (IEEE 45, IEEE 30, ANSI 10/50) are
calculated automatically by the EZCT. Current transformer excitation curves, knee point
voltages, and turns ratio can be printed on the thermal printer.
Up to 10 tests can be stored in one record. A test contains excitation curve data (typically, 32 data
points per curve), knee point voltages, and turns ratio reading. Up to 128 records can be stored in
FLASH EEPROM memory. Operators can recall the stored test records at a later time for review
and printing.
The Computer Interface mode allows the user to run excitation and ratio tests from the PC or to
retrievet estr ecordss tore dint heEZCTt ot hePC’ sme mor y.
A RS232 serial cable, and a Windows-Based PC Current Transformer Analysis Software (on
CD) is supplied with each EZCT.
This manual will focus on the stand-alone mode for the EZCT.

1.3 Functional Description

The EZCT performs the current transformer excitation test following the ANSI/IEEE C57.13.1-
1981 (IEEE Guide for Testing of Relaying Field Current Transformers). To find the current
transformer excitation curve, the EZCT applies an AC test voltage to the secondary winding of
the current transformer. The test voltage is first raised until the current transformer achieves
saturation. The test voltage is then slowly lowered to zero volts. Test voltage and current
readings are recorded until the test voltage reaches zero volts.
Knee point voltages (IEEE-30, IEEE-45, ANSI-10/50) are calculated automatically by the EZCT.

3
Operating Procedures EZCT and EZCT-10
The current transformer turns ratio is measured using the voltage method (ANSI/IEEE
C57.12.90). The transformer turns ratio percentage error can also be calculated if required. The
EZCT can measure turns ratios from 0.8 to 5,000.00 to one.

Three test voltage ranges (50Vac, 200Vac, 1,200Vac) are available for the excitation test.
Both the EZCT and EZCT-10 have the same functional features. The only difference is that the
EZCT-10 has more output current on the 50Vac and the 200Vac test voltages.
The EZCT test voltage and current output ranges are: 50Vac @ 2A, 200Vac @ 2A, 1200Vac @
1.2A
The EZCT-10 test voltage and current output ranges are: 50Vac @ 10A, 200Vac @ 10A,
1200Vac @ 1.2A

WARNING
Never change the test voltage range during a test. Failure to observe this warning may damage
the EZCT.

1.4 Furnished Test Accessories

The EZCT is supplied with a power cord, a roll of 4.5-inch-wide thermal printer paper, one 35-
foot H test cable, one 20 foot X cable, one ground cable, a duffel bag and a shipping case.

WARNING
Do not change the voltage selector switch during a test. Failure to observe this may result in
the EZCT tripping the circuit breaker.

6.1 Run Test Procedure

The following test procedure describes the steps required for a CT Excitation and Turns Ratio
Test or a Turns Ratio Test only.

6.1.1 Run Excitation and Ratio test

When a user runs an excitation test, the EZCT applies an AC voltage to the CT secondary
winding. The user raises this AC voltage until the CT windings reach the saturation point. The
user then slowly lowers the test voltage back to zero volts. The voltage and current readings will
be recorded to plot the excitation curve. A typical excitation test contains a maximum of 32 data
points. There may be less than 32 data points depending on how quickly the voltage is lowered to
zero or because of the CT excitation curve characteristics.
The Knee point voltages (using IEEE 45, IEEE 30, ANSI 10/50 standards) are calculated and
printed on the tabulated report.
The CT turns ratio is measured using the voltage method. An AC voltage is applied to the CT
secondary winding. The induced voltage on the CT primary winding is then measured. The CT
turns ratio is the voltage ratio measured between the secondary and the primary windings.

The following procedure describes the steps to run a CT excitation and ratio test.
NOTE
The red HIGH VOLTAGE PRESENT indicator is on when a test voltage is present at the X
terminals.
