BIBLE AND INTERPRETATION
The Old Testament for a
Complex World
How the Bible’s Dynamic Testimony Points to New
Life for the Church
Cameron B. R. Howard

What if the Bible, which has come to us through a complex

process, is just the resource we need to speak to the challenges
of living as Christians in a complex world?
In today’s era of significant cultural upheaval, studying the Old
Testament can seem impractical or irrelevant. Cameron Howard
identifies ways the biblical authors adapted popular culture,
rethought theological assumptions, and developed new literary
genres in order to testify to the faithfulness of God amid ancient
political, cultural, and religious turmoil. By showcasing the Bible’s
creativity, Howard reminds readers that hope for the future can
be found even in the most ancient corners of our tradition.
This book reclaims the Old Testament as a vital resource for
today’s church, showing how critical study of these texts helps us
understand the Bible as a dynamic testimony for our changing
future. It will appeal to professors and students of the Bible,
particularly the Old Testament, as well as to pastors.

Engaging the Christian Scriptures
An Introduction to the Bible, 2nd ed.
Andrew E. Arterbury, W. H. Bellinger Jr.,
and Derek S. Dodson

This readable, affordable, and faith-friendly introduction to the

Bible aids students as they engage in their first informed reading
of the biblical text in an academic setting. The authors, who have
significant undergraduate teaching experience, approach the
Christian Scriptures from historical, literary, and theological per-
spectives. The book is designed for a one-semester course and is
meant to be read alongside the biblical text, enabling students to
become educated readers of the Bible. In the process, it introduces
critical perspectives and approaches without undermining the
theological claims found in the Christian Scriptures. Text boxes,
illustrations, maps, and suggestions for further reading are
included.
This new edition incorporates professor and student feedback,
adds a glossary, has been revised throughout, and is supplemented
by updated and expanded web-based pedagogical resources.

Miracles Today
The Supernatural Work of God in the Modern World
Craig S. Keener

Do miracles still happen today? This book demonstrates that

miraculous works of God, which have been part of the experi-
ence of the church around the world since Christianity began,
continue into the present. New Testament scholar Craig Keener
addresses common questions about miracles and provides
compelling reasons to believe in them today, including many
accounts that offer evidence of verifiable miracles.
Miracles Today gives an accessible and concise overview of one of
Keener’s most significant research topics. His earlier two-volume
work on miracles stands as the definitive word on the topic, but
its size and scope are daunting to many readers. This book sum-
marizes Keener’s basic argument but contains substantial new
material, including new accounts of the miraculous. It is suitable
as a textbook for professors and students of Bible and theology
and also accessible to church leaders and laypeople.

1 Peter
A Commentary
Craig S. Keener

Craig Keener is widely respected for his thorough research,

sound judgments, and knowledge of ancient sources. His
four-volume magnum opus on Acts has received high praise
from all quarters.
This commentary on 1 Peter features Keener’s meticulous and
comprehensive research and offers a wealth of fresh insights.
It will benefit students, pastors, and church leaders alike.

ENDORSEMENT
“Craig Keener has complemented his massive four volumes
on Acts with one nearly as weighty on the brief epistle from the
aging Peter in Rome to those in the vast diaspora of provinces
in northern Asia Minor. He shows that Paul’s letters and echoes
of gospel traditions in the epistle reflect the early formulation of
a shared Christian faith. Keener also presents a translation—or
‘articulation’—of 1 Peter that will jar readers into taking a close
look at his treatment of semantics and syntax. Admitting that Pe-
ter himself was unlikely to be familiar with more than part of the
Jewish and early Christian material, Keener employs the massive

The Book of Acts as Story
A Narrative-Critical Study
David R. Bauer

New Testament scholar and teacher David Bauer helps students

understand the historical, literary, and theological issues of the
book of Acts and introduces key concepts in the field of narra-
tive criticism.
This volume captures the message of the book of Acts by taking
seriously the book’s essential character as an engaging and
powerful story through which Luke communicates profound
theological truth. While giving attention at appropriate points to
historical background, its purpose is to lead readers through a
close reading that yields fresh insights into the deeper meaning
of passages throughout the book of Acts. It thus demonstrates
that a narrative-critical study can yield exciting theological fruit.
The Book of Acts as Story will appeal to professors, students, and
scholars of Acts and hermeneutics.

Scripture as Communication
Introducing Biblical Hermeneutics, 2nd ed.
Jeannine K. Brown

In this guide to the theory and practice of biblical hermeneutics,

Jeannine Brown emphasizes the communicative nature of
Scripture, proposing a communication model as an effective
approach to interpreting the Bible. Brown interacts with the
work of leading thinkers in the field, first explicating and then
demonstrating how such a model can enhance our ability to
understand Scripture. Her fresh, engaging voice comes through
in this clearly written guide for professors, students, and church
leaders. The new edition of this successful textbook has been
revised and updated throughout to interact with recent advances
in interpretive theory and practice.

HANDBOOKS ON THE NEW TESTAMENT
Benjamin L. Gladd, series editor

New Testament scholar Benjamin Gladd provides an easy-to-

navigate resource for studying and understanding the Gospels.
This book covers all four Gospels and explores each major pas-
sage, showing how Jesus is the central figure of each plot. It also
unpacks how the Old Testament informs the Gospels.
Written with classroom utility and pastoral application in mind,
this accessibly written volume summarizes the content of each
major section of the biblical text to help students, pastors, and
laypeople quickly grasp the sense of particular passages. The
series, modeled after Baker Academic’s successful Old Testament
Handbook series, focuses primarily on the content of the biblical
books without getting bogged down in historical-critical ques-
tions or detailed verse-by-verse exegesis.

ENDORSEMENTS

and interested laypersons want and need. He admirably gets to

Passions of the Christ
The Emotional Life of Jesus in the Gospels
F. Scott Spencer

New Testament scholar F. Scott Spencer focuses on a neglected area

in the study of Jesus and the Gospels: the emotional life of Jesus.
The topic of emotions is a burgeoning area of study across
humanities and science fields. This book offers a fresh reading of
the Gospels through the lens of Jesus’s emotions—anger, grief,
disgust, surprise, compassion, and joy. These emotions motivate
Jesus’s mission and reveal to Gospel readers what matters most
to him. Amid his passions, Jesus forges his character as God’s
incarnate Messiah, wholly embodied and emotionally engaged
with others and thoroughly embedded in the surrounding envi-
ronment.
Passions of the Christ is well suited as a supplemental text for
New Testament or Gospels courses. It will also be of interest
to New Testament scholars.

A Grammar and Reader
Carolyn Roberts Thompson

Every PhD student in biblical studies is expected to read German,

but there are surprisingly few resources to help students learn to
read and translate scholarly theological works.
This streamlined grammar and reader by an experienced teacher
and German-language expert presents biblical passages and
theological readings of gradually increasing difficulty. The book
introduces students to the German language immediately with
readings from the Bible, using familiar passages to help students
see sentence patterns. Exercises for the beginning readings focus
on the grammar of the sentences. Students are then introduced
to dictionary articles and excerpts from essays and books, and
they can check their translations against the answers given in
the back of the book. As students complete the exercises, they
gradually learn vocabulary and gain an understanding of how
German sentences are formed. By the end of the book, students
should be able to read articles on their own.
The book includes readings from:
• The Old and New Testaments
• Walter Bauer Carolyn Roberts Thompson (MAT, Southwest

The Sermons to the Seven Churches of
Revelation
A Commentary and Guide
Jeffrey A. D. Weima

A New Testament scholar, preacher, and tour guide to the lands

of the New Testament explains the meaning of the seven sermons
of Revelation 2–3 and shows how these ancient messages are
relevant for the church today.
Jeffrey Weima offers readers not only detailed exegesis of the
seven “letters” (actually sermons) to the seven churches of
Revelation 2:1–3:22 but also sample sermons that show how
these ancient messages, despite their subtle Old Testament
allusions and perplexing images, are relevant for the contempo-
rary church. The book provides an informed commentary on a
challenging portion of Scripture and help toward preaching the
text. Weima avoids going too deeply into scholarly debates that
are difficult for readers to wade through, but he also corrects
those who handle the text in a superficial manner that embraces
popular interpretations not grounded in biblical exegesis or
historical evidence. The book includes photos, maps, and charts
and will be of interest to preachers, students, teachers, and Bible
study groups.

Paul and the Economy of Salvation
Reading from the Perspective of the Last Judgment
Brendan Byrne, SJ

This major contribution to Pauline scholarship is the culmina-

tion of over forty years of teaching on Paul.
Brendan Byrne provides a fresh look at Paul that takes full account
of his context within the framework of Jewish apocalyptic
expectation of his time. This work understands the “economy of
salvation” in the deutero-Pauline and patristic sense as referring
to the comprehensive sweep of the divine project to rescue the
world in Christ. It proceeds from the conviction that Paul is an
apocalyptic thinker and that, within that perspective, the motif
of the last judgment must be recognized as the essential horizon
of his theology and proclamation of the gospel. Byrne demon-
strates that topics discussed in Pauline studies and Christian
theology—such as justification, salvation, and the soteriological
function of Christ’s death—go astray when the significance of the
last judgment falls from view.
Offering a fresh Catholic perspective that engages with centuries
of Protestant interpretation, this book recaptures the significance
of the motif of the last judgment for the interpretation of Paul. It
will be a valuable resource for scholars, professors, and students

BRAZOS THEOLOGICAL COMMENTARY ON THE BIBLE

Systematic theologian Paul Hinlicky, a scholar widely respected

for his contributions in contemporary dogmatics, offers a theo-
logical reading of Joshua in this addition to the Brazos Theo-
logical Commentary on the Bible series. Hinlicky compares and
contrasts the politics of purity and the politics of redemption in an
innovative and illuminating way and locates the book of Joshua
in the postexilic genesis of apocalyptic theology. As with other
series volumes, this commentary is designed to serve the church,
providing a rich resource for preachers, teachers, students, and

Reclaiming the Biblical Vision for Church Leadership
Dorothy A. Lee

Dorothy Lee examines evidence from the New Testament and church tra-

leadership roles, which has implications for the contemporary church.

ministry of women, drawing on evidence from Scripture, history, and
the theological tradition. Her work challenges the idolatry of masculinity
that continues to cripple men and women alike within the Christian

This paradigm-shifting commentary on Revelation brings Francis

Moloney’s keen narrative and exegetical work to bear on one of the
most difficult and misinterpreted texts in the biblical canon.

ENDORSEMENT
“Inspired by the work of Italian scholar Eugenio Corsini, Moloney
offers a vigorous challenge to readings of Revelation as an ‘apocalyptic’
work focused on eschatological judgment. With astute sensitivity to the
rhetoric of this ‘genre-bending’ text, Moloney argues that Revelation
celebrates the eternal victory of the sacrificed Lamb over all powers of
evil. His persuasive reading of Revelation as a work of ‘realized’ escha-
tology will stimulate debate but will also inspire a deeper appreciation

“Here is a gift to the church—the richest example of theological

commentary on Paul’s letter to the Ephesians that we now have, from
one of our finest contemporary theologians. Drawing on the Reformed
exegetical and theological vision of John Webster, Allen here presents
the fruit of his patient listening to the apostolic witness, and it is nour-
ishing fruit indeed.”—Wesley Hill, Trinity School for Ministry
“This volume is an admirably compact example of a theologically
focused commentary—celebrating what Paul celebrates and wrestling
where the epistle wrestles. Allen is a fitting substitute for the late John

From Christ to Christianity

How the Jesus Movement Became the Church in Less Than
a Century
James R. Edwards

How did the movement founded by Jesus transform more in the first
seventy-five years after his death than it has in the two thousand years
since?
From Christ to Christianity tells the story of how the Christian movement,
which began as relatively informal, rural, Hebrew and Aramaic speaking,
and closely anchored to the Jewish synagogue, became primarily urban,
Greek speaking, and gentile by the early second century, spreading
through the Greco-Roman world with a mission agenda and church
organization distinct from its roots in Jewish Galilee. It also shows how
the early church’s witness can encourage the church today. The book
will be of interest to professors and students for use in courses on the
New Testament, early Christianity, patristics, and church history.

A Call to Christian Formation
How Theology Makes Sense of Our World
John C. Clark and Marcus Peter Johnson

A Call to Christian Formation shows that theology is both integrally

related to formation in Jesus Christ and shapes our under-
standing of the world. John Clark and Marcus Peter Johnson
explore the deep connections between theology and the life of
the Christian and examine what it means for Christians to be
transformed by the renewing of their minds. Christian formation
is incomplete and impossible without theological formation,
because Christ transforms our hearts and minds, attuning them
to the reality of God. Clark and Johnson also emphasize Chris-
tian formation as a defining feature of the church, arguing that
theology must be integrally connected to the church’s traditions
and practices.
Professors and students in theology, introduction to Christian
thought, and Christianity courses will value this work. It will
also appeal to pastors and church leaders.

Introducing Beliefs and Practices
Eve Tibbs
Foreword by His All Holiness Ecumenical
Patriarch Bartholomew

Eve Tibbs offers a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to

the beliefs and practices of the Eastern Orthodox Church for
Western readers. Tibbs has devoted her career to translating the
Orthodox faith to an evangelical audience and has over twenty
years of experience teaching this material to students. Assuming

Early North African Christianity
Turning Points in the Development of the Church
David L. Eastman

This accessible introduction highlights the important role the

North African church played in the development of Christian
thought.
Early North African Christianity demonstrates that Christians from
North Africa contributed in significant ways to Christian under-
standing as a whole concerning a number of issues, including
what it means to be “truly” Christian, how Christians should live
out (and if need be, die for) their faith, and how they should
interact with the broader culture. Christian theologians also
shaped the trajectory of theology on issues such as the Trinity,
baptism, and divine sovereignty and human responsibility. David
Eastman zeroes in on five turning points in history at which
we see these dynamics, showing how North African believers
significantly shaped Christian theology, identity, and practice in
ways that directly impact the church today. After an introductory
chapter defining the geographical focus, the volume contains five
sections: Perpetua and Felicity, Tertullian, Cyprian of Carthage,
the Donatist Controversy, and Augustine of Hippo. Each section
opens with a chapter on historical context (“Life and Times”)
followed by two chapters on particular issues or dynamics for David L. Eastman (PhD, Yale University) is
that topic.
Written and designed for the classroom, Early North African
Christianity brings Africa back to the center of the study of

Marriage, Scripture, and the Church
Theological Discernment on the Question
of Same-Sex Union
Darrin W. Snyder Belousek
Afterword by Wesley Hill

This book takes a distinctive approach to the same-sex-union

debate by framing the issue as a matter of marriage. Darrin
Snyder Belousek demonstrates that the interpretation of Scrip-
ture affects whether the church should revise its doctrine of
marriage for the sake of sanctioning same-sex union. Engaging
charitably yet critically with opposing viewpoints, he delves
deeply into what marriage is, what it is for, and what it means
as presented in the biblical narrative and theological tradition,
articulating a biblical-traditional theology of marriage for the
contemporary church.

ENDORSEMENTS
“I was immediately prejudiced in favor of this book, because
it starts in such a wise and illuminating place. It starts with the
nature of marriage itself as the Scriptures see it and as theolo-
gians and the church’s teaching have seen it. And it stays with
that framework all the way through.”—John Goldingay, Fuller

Recovering Trinitarian Classical Theism
Craig A. Carter

ENDORSEMENTS

orthodox doctrine of God smashes our idolatrous tendencies

Divine Attributes
Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture
John C. Peckham

This book offers a clear and constructive account of the nature

and attributes of God. It addresses the doctrine of God from
exegetical, historical, and constructive-theological perspectives,
bringing the biblical portrayal of God in relationship to the
world into dialogue with prominent philosophical and theolog-
ical questions. Some questions the book engages include: Does
God change? Does God have emotions? Does God know the
future? Is God entirely good and loving? How can God be one
and three? Chapters correspond to the major metaphysical and
moral attributes of God.
Divine Attributes will be of use to professors and students in
courses in systematic theology and the doctrine of God.

ENDORSEMENTS
“Divine attribution is often overlooked in its importance for
Christian reflection, but it is critical to reckon with the identity
and character of the One Christians worship. Peckham’s latest

When Did Sin Begin?
Human Evolution and the Doctrine of Original Sin
Loren Haarsma

The topic of evolution and human origins is hotly debated in

Christian academic and church circles. If God used evolution to
create humanity, when did sin enter the picture, and how did it
spread from a few individuals to all of us?
Physicist Loren Haarsma shows that it is possible both to affirm
what science tells us about human evolution and to maintain
belief in original sin. Haarsma has studied, written, and spoken
on science and faith for decades. In this volume, he argues that
there are several possible ways of harmonizing the science of
human evolution and the doctrine of original sin, taking seriously
both what the Bible teaches and what we learn from studying the
natural world.
When Did Sin Begin? outlines the history of the doctrine of origi-
nal sin, summarizes the scientific evidence for human evolution,
and describes several approaches for bringing the two together
in harmony. Without privileging one over the others, Haarsma
presents a range of scenarios for how sin might have entered
humanity’s story and examines the strengths and challenges of
each. Professors and students in courses discussing science and

INTERCULTURAL STUDIES
Teaching and Learning across Cultures
A Guide to Theory and Practice
Craig Ott

Representing the fruit of a lifetime of reflection and practice,

this comprehensive resource helps teachers understand the way
people in different cultures learn so they can adapt their teaching
for maximum effectiveness.
Drawing on extensive research and cross-cultural experience
from around the world, senior missiologist and educator Craig
Ott introduces students to current theories and best practices for
teaching and learning across cultures. He examines five dimen-
sions of culture’s influence on teaching and learning: cognition,
worldview, social relations, use of instructional media, and the
environmental context. Additional topics include intercultural
competence for teachers living in a foreign culture and learning
style theory. Case studies, illustrations, diagrams, and sidebars
help the theories of the book come to life.
Teaching and Learning across Cultures will be useful for professors
and students of missions and intercultural studies as well as inter-
cultural teachers, including development workers, missionaries,
teachers of English as a second language, and cross-cultural
teachers.

Women in the Mission of the Church
Their Opportunities and Obstacles throughout
Christian History
Leanne M. Dzubinski and Anneke H. Stasson

Women have been central to the work of Christian ministry

and actively involved in the growth of the worldwide Christian
church from the time of Jesus to the twenty-first century. Yet the
story of Christianity is too often told as a story of men.
This accessibly written book tells the story of faithful women
throughout church history, demonstrating their integral partici-
pation in the church’s mission. It highlights the legacies of a wide
variety of women, showing how they have overcome obstacles
to their ministries and have transformed cultural constraints
to spread the gospel and build the church. Each section of the
book covers a different period of church history and introduces
readers to significant women and themes of a specific era.
Women in the Mission of the Church is well suited for professors
and students in courses on mission or church history. Pastors,
church leaders, mission organization leaders, field missionaries,
and lay readers in women’s groups or missions groups will also
value this work.

PRACTICAL THEOLOGY, SPIRITUALITY, AND FORMATION
Preaching to People in Pain
How Suffering Can Shape Your Sermons and Connect
with Your Congregation
Matthew D. Kim

This book offers an important corrective to a pain-averse culture

that celebrates individualism and success, encouraging pastors
to preach on the painful issues their congregations face. Preacher
and teacher Matthew Kim encourages preachers not to avoid
preaching on afflictions. Rather, he emboldens pastors, whenever
appropriate, to connect the pain in Scripture passages with the
pain of their listeners. Through vulnerability and self-disclosure,
says Kim, pastors can help their congregants share their suffering
in community for the purpose of healing and transformation.
The book includes stories, shares relevant Scripture texts impart-
ing biblical wisdom, and offers best practices for preaching on
specific topics. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and
a sample sermon.

The Big Idea Companion for Preaching
and Teaching
A Guide from Genesis to Revelation
Matthew D. Kim and Scott M. Gibson, editors

Haddon Robinson’s widely used and influential text, Biblical

Preaching, has influenced generations of students and preachers.
In The Big Idea Companion for Preaching and Teaching, evangelical
homileticians, teachers of preaching, and experienced pastors
show that Robinson’s “big idea” approach to expository preaching
still works in today’s diverse cultures and fast-paced world.
This accessible resource offers an insider’s view on figuring out
the big idea of each book of the Bible, helping preachers and
teachers check their interpretation of particular biblical books
and passages. The contributors offer tips on how to divide each
book of the Bible into preaching and teaching passages, guidance
on difficult passages and verses, cultural perspectives for faithful
application, and suggested resources for interpreting, preaching,
and teaching. Pastors, teachers, Bible study leaders, small
groups, and college and seminary students and professors will
find a wealth of valuable information in this resource.

Liberty for All
Defending Everyone’s Religious Freedom
in a Pluralistic Age
Andrew T. Walker
Foreword by Robert P. George

Christians are often thought of as defending only their own reli-

gious interests in the public square. They are viewed as worrying
exclusively about the erosion of their freedom to assemble and to
follow their convictions, while not seeming as concerned about
publicly defending the rights of Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and
atheists to do the same.
Public theologian Andrew T. Walker argues for a robust Christian
ethic of religious liberty that helps the church defend religious
freedom for everyone in a pluralistic society. As we practice
religious liberty for our neighbors, we can find civility and com-
monality amid disagreement, further the church’s engagement
in the public square, and become the strongest defenders of
religious liberty for all.

Abuelita Faith
What Women on the Margins Teach Us
about Wisdom, Persistence, and Strength
Kat Armas

Kat Armas, a second-generation Cuban American, grew up on

the outskirts of Miami’s famed Little Havana neighborhood. Her
earliest theological formation came from her grandmother, her
abuelita, who fled Cuba during the height of political unrest and
raised three children alone after her husband passed away.
Combining personal storytelling with biblical reflection, Abuelita
Faith tells the story of unnamed and overlooked theologians in
society and in the Bible (mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and
daughters) whose survival, strength, resistance, and persistence
teach us the true power of faith and love. Armas shows us how
voices on the margins—those often dismissed, isolated, and
oppressed because of their gender, socioeconomic status, or lack
of education—have more to teach us about following God than
we realize. Her exploration of abuelita theology will help people
of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds reflect on the abuelitas in
their lives and ministries and on ways they can live out abuelita
faith every day.

Autism, Faith, and the Gifts of Neurodiversity
Daniel Bowman Jr.

One in fifty-four children have autism, according to the CDC,

and autism is reported across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic
groups. Yet most of what people think they know about autism
is wrong.
Novelist, poet, and professor Daniel Bowman received an autism
diagnosis at age thirty-five after experiencing crises in his per-
sonal and professional life. The diagnosis shed light on his expe-
rience in a new, life-giving way. This captivating book debunks
myths about autism with a realistic yet hope-filled deep dive
into Bowman’s heart, mind, and life, revealing new insights into
autism, relationships, faith, and the gift of neurodiversity. Rather
than viewing autism as a deficiency, he teaches readers—through
stories of his heartbreaks and triumphs—authentic ways to love
their neighbors as themselves, including their autistic neighbors
who are fearfully and wonderfully, if differently, made.

Embodied
Living as Whole People in a Fractured World
Gregg R. Allison

We rarely give thought to our bodies until faced with a physical challenge or
crisis. We have somehow internalized the unbiblical idea that the immaterial
aspect of our being (our soul or spirit) is inherently good while the material
aspect (our body) is at worst inherently evil and at best neutral—just a vehicle
for our souls to get around.
This biblically grounded theology of the human body equips us to live faith-
fully not just in our bodies but as bodies. Theologian Gregg Allison presents
a holistic theology of the human body from conception through eternity and
answers pressing contemporary questions related to our bodies. Topics include
human sexuality, gender, body image, rest, death, resurrection, and more.
