These numbers have a special meaning for
organizations like Winona Health. We are open
and operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
365 days a year – because at any time someone
may need help.

Whether through the Emergency Department, the

clinics, the hospital, or any of our senior services,
community members access healthcare services
around the clock. Needs can arise when you least
expect them – chest pain, appendicitis, accidents,
infections, flare ups of a chronic condition, and
more. Winona Health attends to all of these
situations when you need help. Throughout this
annual report you have the opportunity to get an
inside look at what goes on behind the scenes day
and night at Winona Health.

As we contemplate our past and our future, the

one constant is our community’s need for high
quality healthcare services when you need them.
Change is hard and we have been through a lot of
it. This past year has had its challenges, but I am
pleased to report we had a strong year on many
fronts. Patient safety is our priority. Our focus on
quality continues across all areas. Patient
satisfaction – your voice – is critical input into
our work, and our financial situation has stabilized
after several difficult years. This doesn’t happen
by accident but through the commitment and
hard work of the physicians, staff and volunteers.

Healthcare Never Sleeps

As you know, the recent period – as reported in last year’s
annual report – has been a difficult one for healthcare.
The uncertainties in this time of change, including funding
mechanisms at the state and federal level, total reform and
assimilation of new operations under the Winona Health
umbrella, all took their toll.

But just as Winona Health employees are always available to

you in the time of need, nearly 1,100 employees – physicians,
other professional care providers, nurses, support staff and
administration – have worked around the clock behind the
scenes during the past year to make the progress that will
ensure a vibrant Winona Health for years to come.

Moving to strong financial achievement this year is

something each member of the Winona Health Board of
Directors salutes as a hard-earned accomplishment that
required everyone’s participation. Without significant
attention to detail that required keen monitoring of both
patient satisfaction and all operational processes, this
major turnaround could not have been achieved.

It is a key example of the kind of effort that is required

around the clock, each day of the year.

Committed to Improvement
As Chief of the Winona Health medical staff, it is my privilege
to work with an excellent team of caring professionals who
share a passion for providing quality care to our patients.

Our medical staff is dedicated to and engaged in ongoing

continuous improvement of our processes to ensure that we
provide the best possible care to our patients. Patients today
expect, and deserve, ever–higher levels of quality and safety
in their healthcare organization. Here at Winona Health, we
are committed to constant improvement that moves us to
higher levels of performance and patient satisfaction. We do
this through a disciplined approach that continually raises
the bar.

Our quality measurements are shared with all of our staff.

Lasting change happens only when it is driven by frontline
caregivers with continuous improvement an integral part of
everyone’s job. No ‘quick fix’ approach is sufficient to make
quality improvements happen. To quote John Guaspari, an
expert on quality:

“Make no mistake: realizing significant improvements is

hard, hard work….it means doing things better but it
will also mean doing things differently which is to say,
it will mean change.”

We are being called to make changes to how we used to

operate – and that is not always comfortable. I have practiced
medicine in Winona for over 32 years and while change is
hard, I am excited because it calls every one of us to focus
on improving patient care in all settings. I feel passionately
about what we do at Winona Health, and I know my passion
is shared by my colleagues and the staff.

We have a unique role and responsibility in our regional

community because of our history and community
ownership. Our skilled executive team, committed physicians,
and a dedicated and compassionate staff work together to
achieve the important goal of improving the health and

Crucial Care in Critical Situations
At 2:14 a.m., the on-call surgery team performs an emergency appendectomy on
a 28-year-old male. The team can be on-site within ten minutes of receiving a
call from the Winona Health switchboard operator. The operating room team
includes the surgeon, a nurse anesthetist, a scrub nurse, a registered nurse and
a surgical assistant.

“There is an anesthesia provider on call at Winona Health, 24/7/365, providing

a crucial service in critical situations. When we get called in, it is never routine.
It could be a motor vehicle accident, emergency C-section, ICU intervention or
many other situations. Our anesthesia team provides care for one patient at a
time…that is what I really like about it. It is an important job. We are integral
to the situation as we are constantly monitoring our patient’s vital functions.
Our job is to keep the patient comfortable so the surgeon can do their work.
We are there during every second of that surgery. There is huge satisfaction in
providing comfort to our patient.”

 Healthy Habits: Positive Outcomes
At 6:30 a.m., the Healthy Living Center opens in the Parkview Office Building and individuals
start their morning exercise routine.

Ten years ago, eighty-two year old Lorraine “Rainy” Griesel had a heart attack and later
experienced additional heart problems. Since then, Rainy has been coming to Winona Health’s
Healthy Living Center three days a week. Alicia Lalim, an exercise physiologist in Cardiac
Rehabilitation, works closely with Rainy to monitor her heart rate and blood pressure. “We are
dedicated to caring for all of our patients, and Rainy is a great example of the positive outcomes
we see when our patients work hard and follow their individualized workout program.”

“The staff couldn’t be nicer, and I’ve made great friends here. I’ve developed new habits
which have made my heart and bones stronger, and my blood pressure is under control.

Our Team Approach
Each day at 8 a.m., the Winona Health Care Coordination Team meets in a room adjacent to the nurses’
station on the Medical/Surgical floor. The room is filled with white, dry erase boards sectioned by room
numbers. Patient names, their diagnosis and vital statistics fill the boards. As the team discusses each
patient, information is updated according to the change in each patient’s medical status.

“The main idea of the Care Coordination Team is to get everyone involved…nurses, social workers,
pharmacists, nutritionists, physicians…so every patient in the Intensive Care Unit and on the
Medical/Surgical floor is reviewed and assessed. Our morning report makes a better situation for
our patients. Hospitalized patients are very sick and our Care Coordination Team makes sure the
patient is getting what they need while in the hospital and then when they get home. This entire
team review also helps avoid or reduce readmissions to the hospital. I think our patients leave
happier and healthier because of what we do.”

Service Starts Here
Thousands of patients visit the Winona Health clinics throughout the year, including
Winona Clinic, Family Medicine, Urgent Care, Rushford, Lewiston and numerous
specialty clinics.

At 11:17 a.m., Zoe, Winona Clinic valet, helps Jeanne, age 93, get to her appointment
with Charles Shepard, MD. Like many Winona Health patients throughout the region,
she has formed a close bond with her primary care physician. Dr. Shepard has been
Jeanne’s physician for decades, and she has a lot of faith in his ability to help her stay
on track with her health. In addition to appreciating the healthcare services she receives
at Winona Health, Jeanne finds the valet service to be a wonderful convenience.

“I can still drive, but I can’t walk very far, so I always have valet staff park my
car and get me where I need to go. It’s simpler for me—and for them—to use
a wheelchair. It’s a wonderful service. They take such good care of people.
Things certainly have changed over the years—there are so many new services.”

 Safety is Non-Negotiable
At 1:14 p.m., the Inpatient Pharmacy staff receives an urgent medication order
from the Intensive Care Unit. Before a dose is prepared, pharmacists take every
precaution to ensure safety. The proper medication and dose is checked and
rechecked, and each patient’s current drug history is reviewed to prevent
possible negative reactions.

“Many people don’t know what we do, but the Inpatient Pharmacy Department
is like a safety net. There are a lot of sound-alike and look-alike medications…
it can be similar to looking at soup cans without the labels. Medications need
to fit each patient individually, so we check and recheck everything every day.
We want the best outcome for the patient.”

On the Move
p.m.
At 2:07 p.m., Marlene swims at the YMCA thanks to Watkins Manor assisted living’s
free shuttle service. For the past year, shuttle driver Cindy McGill has driven people
all over Winona…to the grocery store, medical appointments or a social game of
cards at a friend’s house. The shuttle service provides peace of mind to residents
and their families. Winona Health provides a wide array of services to meet the
needs of seniors including home care, assisted living, memory care, transitional
and long-term care, palliative care and hospice services. The goal is to help seniors
remain active and independent for as long as possible.

Winona Manor to have lunch with my husband who has Alzheimer’s Disease
or to the YMCA, I don’t know what I would do without it.”

The Gift of Renewed Sight
This afternoon, Valerie Clarke works on an intricate crochet pattern, something
that wasn’t possible a year ago when she could see only muted, foggy images.
In 2010, Ophthalmologist Laurel Quinn, MD, (Winona Health Eye Care Center),
performed cataract surgery on both of Valerie’s eyes, renewing her ability to see
clearly and do the things she enjoys. When a Lewiston Clinic staff member learned
that Valerie was uninsured, she put her in touch with a Winona Health social
worker who provided information about the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund.
Established by Benjamin A. Miller in honor of his wife, the fund has assisted
more than 2,260 area residents like Valerie with their medical care needs.

“There are no words that can adequately express my gratitude to Winona

Health and the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund for giving me the gift of
returned sight. I had forgotten what it was like to read a book or how brilliant
colors really are. Thank you for giving those gifts back to me. What the fund

 Another Special Delivery
Last year, 345 babies were born in the Family Birth Center at Winona Health.
Today at 5:21 p.m., Family Birth Center nurse, Cindy Strobush, RN, helps welcome
baby Ayvin into the world. Most of a newborn’s time in the Family Birth Center is
spent in the room with their mom, but sometimes new moms need a little extra
rest. Family Birth Center nurses help make sure newborns are comfortable and
carefully monitor their health, including checking their hearing.

“It’s wonderful to be able to be a part of this special time for each family, and
we do whatever we can to make it the kind of experience the new parents
want it to be. We make it easy for them to involve the new baby’s siblings,
grandparents and other family members to whatever extent they wish.
I’ve been caring for new moms and babies in the Family Birth Center for
30 years, and, after all this time, a baby’s birth is always a miracle to me.”

All in a Surgeon’s Day
Lee Trombetta, MD, general surgeon, is one of several healthcare providers who joined the Winona Health
medical staff last year.

At 6:20 p.m., the Emergency Department physician notifies Dr. Trombetta that a patient may need surgery.
A typical day for a surgeon is a busy one. They arrive early, review charts, consult with the surgery team and
check on their patients. After scrubbing in and reviewing safety checklists, surgery begins. Later, they check
on patients in the hospital or the clinic. They answer patients’ questions and review radiology and lab reports.
And if they are on call like Dr. Trombetta is tonight, their day may last much longer when, as in this case, a
patient needs emergency surgery.

“Since joining Winona Health, I have had the opportunity to manage a surprising variety of cases.
In a single week, my surgeries range from routine to advanced laparoscopic procedures to breast cancer
surgery. Every day brings new challenges. I’m looking forward to providing the Winona community with
general surgery options as well as some new and exciting procedures for many years to come. My wife
and I are pleased to start our life in Winona and are meeting wonderful people through volunteer work
at the schools and the Winona Youth Hockey Program.”

Ready For Anything
You never know what will come in the door in the Emergency Department. Tonight,
at 8:19 p.m., a 37-year-old female complaining of severe abdominal pain is admitted.
The Emergency Department treats nearly 15,000 patients each year. In 2010, it earned
the Level IV Trauma designation from the State of Minnesota, enhancing a patient’s
chances for survival regardless of proximity to an urban trauma hospital.

“Being an ED doctor isn’t the glamour job often shown on TV. Our team has to
think quickly and make accurate decisions with limited information. We essentially
become ‘investigative reporters.’ Each room we walk into is a different situation.
It could be a pulmonary embolism or an infected hang-nail, broken arm or cardiac
arrest. The ED staff cares for a wide array of people, many who are vulnerable,
very ill or without resources. During the night shift, you have a higher chance of
witnessing outlandish behavior by people drinking too much or abusing drugs,
and we deal with an occasional punch. But fortunately, the negative issues are
offset by other things such as the feeling of satisfaction after saving someone’s life.”

Sophisticated Technology
At 10:51 p.m., a Winona Area Ambulance Service crew brings the driver of a vehicle
involved in a car-truck collision into the Emergency Department. The physician orders
a CT scan to determine the extent and exact location of the injury causing the patient’s
neck and back pain. The radiology technologists use a ceiling lift to carefully position the
patient for the scan. Winona Health performs more than 5,300 CT scans a year.

“Along with regularly scheduled appointments, we are frequently called upon to scan
patients as the need arises. They may come in through the Emergency Department
or through physician orders due to a clinic visit. Our days are never the same but our
focus never changes. We must provide high-quality scans so that our radiologists
have the clearest images possible to pinpoint the problem area and determine the
underlying cause. From sinus scans to brain scans…we do so much more here than
most people realize, and we’re always updating our technology to ensure the safest
high-quality care.”

Coming in 2011— Winona Health will install the world’s most advanced scanner – the 320-slice
Toshiba Aquilion ONE. This technology uses 320 ultra-high resolution detector rows (or slices) to provide
incredibly detailed four-dimensional images of complete organs in less time than it takes for your heart
to pump one beat. The Aquilion ONE CT will provide comprehensive exams for the treatment of patients
with heart conditions, stroke, cancer and other medical issues, faster, safer and more accurately, enabling
healthier lives and lowering healthcare costs. It is the first CT scanner of its kind in the region.

 From the Foundation Board Chair
As I thought about the theme of this year’s annual report, I couldn’t
help wondering what a “day in the life” is like for people who can’t
afford healthcare.

For individuals and families who don’t have insurance or the ability
to afford healthcare, a day in their life may be another day of
delaying medical care. This can cause feelings of despair, fear and
disappointment and ultimately lead to more serious health issues
and expenses.

While Winona Health is busy 24 hours a day attending to patient

needs, people without sufficient resources have healthcare needs
that don’t get attended to. Delays can cause situations to become
critical – perhaps even life threatening. And that is where the
Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund comes in.

The Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund offers hope to those who
feel despair, it offers help to those who face disappointment and fear.
But today, more people need our help. I need your help.

I am grateful that many generous individuals contribute each year to

help attend to the needs of individuals and families in our community.
As you read through the following list of donors, know that each one
has had a role in delivering on Winona Health’s mission to improve the
health and well-being of our family, friends and neighbors. Won’t you

The Winona Health Foundation’s Guardian Angel program allows people to recognize a physician, nurse or other staff member who made a difference
in the life of a Winona Health patient or resident. When a gift is made to the Foundation in honor of a guardian angel, that staff member receives an

Winona Health Auxiliary
The Winona Health Auxiliary was recognized as the 2010
Outstanding Philanthropic Organization/not-for-profit
by the Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Association
of Fundraising Professionals. The Auxiliary was praised
for their prolific and varied fundraising initiatives as well
as their significant contribution of volunteer time and
expertise to Winona Health.

Julieanne Schwemer, Winona Health Auxiliary

president, expressed sincere appreciation for this
prestigious award. “We are a grass-roots organization
who works so smoothly with the Winona Health staff.
Together, we walk hand-in-hand to enrich the lives
of our patients and residents. It is the power of the
purpose that spurs us on.”

The Winona Health Auxiliary began in 1894 with a

small group of community-minded citizens. Today,
the Auxiliary has grown to more than 400 members—
women and men — engaged in an impressive array
of fundraising activities in support of Winona Health.
The Auxiliary has contributed nearly $1.4 million to
Winona Health in the past 30 years, and since 1962,
they have awarded more than $471,000 in scholarships.
