4.06" 10,000 PSI "DSQ4" SIDE DOOR STRIPPER PACKER
1.0 FEATURES
• The Texas Oil Tools DSA6 Side Door Stripper Packer is designed to pack-off on coiled tubing as it is
stripped in and out of the well, at working pressures up to 10,000 psi. This design permits the replacement
of the packing elements and bushings through the open "window" below the injector. Changing packers
is always easier, but it is particularly advantageous when changing packers with tubing in the well.
• The side door design permits replacement of the packer, energizer and non-extrusion rings by hydraulically
exposing an open portal through which these elements may be changed with tubing in the well.
2.0 SERVICE
H2S SERVICE - All well fluid wetted alloy components to NACE MR-01-75, with Viton and Poly-Myte seals.
Hydraulic seals are Nitrile. Operating temperature range -20°F. to +200°F. Note: seals and pack- off
elements are available for higher temperatures.
NORTH SEA SERVICE - In addition to the NACE Specification s and API requirements additional Charpy
Impact and NDE are carried out. A Design Review and Certificate of Compliance by DNV, Lloyds, or
Bureau Veritas are furnished with the Data Book.
ARCTIC -50°F H2S SERVICE - All well fluid wetted alloy components to NACE MR-01-75, with low
temperature o-rings and special Poly-Myte seals. Charpy Impact Tests at -50°F and NDE on all parts
required by API 6A. Operating temperature range -50°F. to +200°F.
3.0 PACKERS - Reference Drawing DSQ4-T001
PREMATURE PACKER WEAR - The internal wear bushings above the packers are extra long, for better
centering of the coiled tubing and longer wear life. The single most frequent cause of premature packer
wear or failure, is worn bushings. At very low well and hydraulic pressures, worn bushings may be useable.
At higher pressures, it is essential that the non-extrusion rings and packer bushings fit closely around the
tubing to prevent packer extrusion. Bushings must be replaced frequently to minimize any extrusion gaps.
4.0 PACKER REPLACEMENT
Close BOP pipe rams to control well pressure and vent residual well pressure that may remain between
the DSQ4 stripper and the BOP. Back out the two lock screws (42) and open wide both doors (38).
Pressure up the retract port and fully retract cylinder (9) exposing packers and seal (28). Remove upper
non-extrusion ring (6) while supporting packer bushing (5). Remove both halves of energizer (8) to expose
packer (7). Remove packer, lower non-extrusion ring (6), upper bushing (5) and lower bushing (27).
Inspect upper and lower bushing for wear and seal for damage. Replace as necessary.
Re-install lower bushing and non-extrusion ring. Install packer bushing and support while installing new
packer, energizer and upper non-extrusion ring. Pressure up on upper pack-off port and extend cylinder
down over pack-off and seal until doors can be closed around cylinder above collar (10). Rotate the lock
screws to the locked position. Pressurize pack-off port to energize packer as necessary. Equalize well
pressure above the rams in the BOP and open rams.

5.0 DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY - Reference Drawing DSQ4-T001
DISASSEMBLY - Repeat disassembly portion of packer replacement procedure as described previously.
Remove retainer ring (12), washer (11) and step ring (10). Clamp body (22) in a vise and remove both cap
screws (32). Remove bushing clamp (1), to expose end cap (2) and top bushing (33). Pull out top bushing
(33) with both guide bushings (34) and bottom spacer bushing (36). Drain any remaining hydraulic fluid
from pack-off port and remove hydraulic cap (2) using spanner wrench holes to back out thread. Take care
not to damage sealing surfaces of sleeve. Drain remaining hydraulic fluid from retract port in body and
remove cylinder (9). Remove o-rings and seals (25,30 & 31). Remove lower body (22) from upper body (4)
and remove seals (28). Remove head (13) from lower body (22) and o-rings and seals (15, 16 & 17). While
supporting end of piston (23), press piston from body (22), taking care not to damage any external sealing
surfaces. Remove t-seal (48) from piston and seals (24) from body. Clean and lubricate all parts.
ASSEMBLY - Reverse above Disassembly Procedure in same sequence and complete second portion of
Packer Replacement Procedure.

7.0 SUGGESTED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
• After every job, remove the packer and inspect all accessible seals. Remove all trace of well fluids.
• Once a month, remove the packers and bushings. Thoroughly clean all of the items. Grease and
assemble to proper technical manual.
• Once a year, disassemble completely and replace all of the seals.
• After two years strip down and perform NDE on parts exposed to well fluids, replace any worn parts.
• Every four years in service strip down perform NDE on all critical items. Replace any worn parts.
Two Year NDE Requirements - All parts exposed to the well fluids will have to be inspected by NDE
methods. The preferred NDE test would be a wet magnetic particle testing. Not all parts can be tested in
this method. If the parts can not be inspected with MPI then a dye penetrant test will have to be conducted.
Four Year NDE Requirements - All parts exposed to the well fluids, loaded by well pressure or pressure
containing will have to be inspected by NDE methods. The preferred NDE test would be a wet magnetic
particle testing. Not all parts can be tested in this method. If the parts cannot be inspected with MPI then
a dye penetrant test will have to be conducted.
Field Inspections of TOT Stripper Packers - Begin by disassembling the stripper packer. Refer to the
proper technical manual for the detailed instructions for disassembly. Clean all of the parts either with a
steam washer, solvents, or other means. All of the dirt, rust, and scale must be removed.
Worn out packers and bushings are the main reason a stripper will leak. Examination of the packers and
bushing after each job is critical. The packer should be replaced after every job. Corrosion is another
cause for the stripper packer to leak. How much corrosion is too much? Any corrosion that causes pitting
in the base material is too much. The pitting will directly effect the sealing capabilities of the well bore seal,
o-rings, and polypak seals.
Critical areas that must be examined include the well bore seal groove and sealing area. The upper
bushing stack and bushing sleeve is susceptible to corrosion. The bushings themselves will not corrode
but the fluids get trapped between the bushings and the housing and tend to act as a catalyst for corrosion.
The Following Is an Individual Part Detail of What to Look out for During Inspections.
Bushings - The critical bushings are those just above and just below the packer, the ones that prevent
the packer from extruding. If these bushings are allowed to wear too much it will create a leak path for the
packer. Replace the bushings if they become worn. Worn is defined as wear that can be measured with
a caliper to be .10” larger than the coiled tubing size (i.e for 1.25 coiled tubing, 1.350 would be classified
as worn). NOTE: There are special bushings available that are .050” oversized to begin with. These
are not covered in this procedure.
Bushing Stack - The bushings at the upper end of the stripper packer are guide bushings and the main
function is to guide the coiled tubing and prevent it from buckling between the chains and the packer. The
top one will normally wear out faster than the others. It is important that you check the wear on these
frequently.
Well Bore Seal Grooves - The items that house the well bore seals is critical. Damaged seals and
corrosion are the most common cause for this item to leak.

11.0 BUSHING EXTENSION ASSEMBLY - Reference Drawing DSA4-T003
The bushing extension assembly is designed to extend the top of the stripper packer closer to the chains.
This will reduce the unsupported length of the coiled tubing and thereby reduce the risk of buckling the
coiled tubing above the Stripper Packer. This extension will extend the top of the stripper packer
approximately 2.75".
