The document discusses the environmental consequences of choosing between paper or plastic bags and how neither is ideal. Plastic bags take hundreds of years to degrade, polluting the environment as microplastics. Paper bags require energy to produce and some argue it uses more fuel than producing new bags. The best option is to avoid using bags when possible and opt for reusable cloth bags instead.

Paper or plastic?

This simple question that has important environmental

consequences and sometimes that can be hard to know for sure which one has a
smaller impact because plastic bags are such a presence in everyday life and
can be easy to overlook the damage they caused. It is also important to be
aware what kind of choices we have as consumers in an environmentally
unethical system.
Talking about plastic we need to remember that some time ago plastic bags
exploded popularity because it marketed and made a single-use product. They
are cheap but the problem is that environment cannot degrade plastic as quickly
as people produce it. It is also important to know that plastic bags do not
maintain their shape degrades for hundreds of years and first they break down
in micro plastics which can be fatal to marine life. Also it is not a secret that
plastic is made of oil and it takes a lot of electricity for manufacturing one
plastic bag.
It seems that buying a paper reusable bag would make sense; however,
paper also requires a great deal of energy during production that also has a
negative impact on the environment. It does not need as much oil as plastic but
water, trees, chemicals and fossil fuel. Some scientists believe that it is
consuming more fuel than it would take to make a new paper bag.
As we can see the better option to reduce environmental pollution is avoid
using them when it is possible. Also there can be other way to help our planet.
A cloth bag is a key as a multiply usage bag, they are light and last for years.
We also can mention that the bag we choose matters but not as much as what
we put in it and how we use it.
