of our neighboring countries in Asia and for you to understand better your
identity as a Filipino and as an Asian.
This is an instructional material for you to use in learning the
importance of conjunction in speech. Try some of the workable activities that
will process your understanding.
Activity 1. Connect Me More
Look at the pictures! Here are the banners of proverbs. These guys are
from different countries sharing their proverbs, the literature of the folks.

What do you think are the proverbs for? Yes, of course, these are the
sayings that offer life-instruction or advice. Look at the pictures closely. What
country do you think each one represents? Yes, they are from the Philippines,
Japan and South Africa. Our history tells our connection!
Speaking of connection, can you remember the lesson that connects
words or phrases and clauses? Correct, it is CONJUNCTION!
7
Now, read the proverbs again and identify all the conjunctions used and write
them on the space below.

Activity 2. Make Sense
Read the text below and do the activity after reading this text
Rona and Jean are cousins. They are not only pretty girls but also
intelligent students. One night, they slept very late because they wanted to
finish their school projects. Before they went to bed, they had set their alarms
so they wouldn’t be late for school the following day. When the alarm sounded
at exactly 5:00 a.m., Rona got up from her bed. She immediately prepared
herself for school, but Jean was still sound asleep. Rona was able to submit
her project on time, so she was given a perfect score. Jean on the other hand
arrived late in school and was given a point deduction. She felt sad for
submitting late yet promised herself to do better next time.
1. Now that you are done reading, do you see yourself as Rona or Jean in
the text? Why or why not?

2. Identify as many conjunctions used in the text as you can. Write them
below.

Are you done? If so, you are now ready to learn more about conjunction.
Before going further, check first your answers using the key to corrections.
Do you think conjunction is important in the English language? You
are right! It forms our ideas to be understood. Now, let us continue. Read the
meaning of conjunction and study its rules and functions to appropriately use
them in speech and in writing.
Conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases,
sentences, or clauses together. There are three kinds of conjunction:
coordinating, subordinating, and correlative.
Table 1
1. Coordinating conjunctions are word connectors placed between
words, phrases, clauses, or sentences of equal rank.
FANBOYS ( for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
Function
For addition - and
For alteration /option- or
For contrast – but, yet
For cause – for
For consequence or result of something –so
Example:
The Filipino people are strong and resilient.
(The conjunction and connects the words strong and resilient.)
Table 2
1. Correlative conjunctions work in pairs to connect words, phrases, or
clauses of equal importance or rank .
Function:
For correlation of parallel ideas – either… or, not only… but also,
neither…nor, both…and, whether…or
Example:
Correlative conjunction
Filipinos are not only religious but also industrious.
9
Table 3.
3.Subordinating conjunctions are words used to join or link a dependent
clause to an independent clause.
(An independent clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb. A
dependent clause is a clause which cannot exist on its own; it needs an
independent clause to go with it)
Comparison – than, rather than, whether, as much as
Example : He doesn’t earn as much as I do.
Purpose/ Reason/Cause - In order that, so that, that, as,because,
in as much as
Example : According to rumors, Japan has more senior citizens than children
because there is an increase use of birth control.
Time – as long as, often, as , since, ,when, while, after, before, by the time
Example: Since I believe in God , I always give praises in his name.
Effect: accordingly, hence, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently, due to
Example: People throw garbage anywhere; as a result, flood is unstoppable.
Condition or Concession: despite, instead, although, even though, if,
nevertheless,hence
Example: She can receive the relief goods if her name is in the list.
Condition or Concession: despite, instead, although, even though, if,
nevertheless,hence
Example: She can receive the relief goods if her name is in the list.
Summary/ Conclusion: accordingly, as a result, consequently, finally, in
conclusion, in brief, in summary, therefore, to sum up
Example: COVID-19 is more fatal to old people; therefore, they should be staying
inside their homes.
Is the presentation clear to you? If yes, then proceed to the additional
examples and observe the punctuation inserted as you use conjunction in
connecting clauses.
Example: Independent clause before dependent clause
Independent clause Connector Dependent clause
1.Kendo is a good sport because both physical and mental

Here is another example that will help you understand the function of
conjunction in making clear relationship of ideas between sentences or clauses.
Study the paragraph below.
Time Contrast Concession
Yesterday, while I was answering my assignment review in English, I
was watching my favorite fantasy movie in my mobile phone. I was trying to
read and focus on my notes, but I lost my concentration. Nevertheless, I
continued. As a result, I got low score in our review assignment when my
teacher checked it. Consequently, I promised never to watch movie if I study.

An Excerpt Speech from Philippines Investment Forum
Of President Benigno S. Aquino
March 24, 2015
The Philippines is poised for even more success. However, there is one
aspect of our country that has to be sufficiently measured, and that is the
limitless potential of our people, who have been the lifeblood of our success.
These past few years, our people have proven themselves to the world. But
having been exposed to the skill, talent, Loyalty, and resilience of so many of our
countrymen, I know that we have only scratched the surface.
I am thankful that all of you are there today, whether it is those who have
already invested in this country, or those who have just taken the first step. To
those who are there to take a closer look at the Philippines.
If on the other hand, you decline this invitation, perhaps I may pose a
statement, how confident are you that you will never say: we missed much a good
opportunity!
Thank you for your kind attention. Good day!

philosopher.
A great leader in his time in India was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
He was born on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar, India and died January 30,
1948. He was the leader of the National Movement in India. His “Quit India”
speech had driven all Indians to fight for their independence in a non-violent

Do you know what informative and persuasive speeches are? If you do not
know, pay attention to this definition.
An informative speech gives valuable information on the specific topic
to the audience to make them understand. Persuasive speech is persuading
with an appealing emotion to convince the audience to agree to the point and

act on it. The ‘Quit India” speech is an example of a persuasive speech. It
inspired the people of India to work as one in fighting for their Independence.

World Youth Day 2019
An Excerpted Pope Francis’ Address
At the Opening of World Youth Day
“You teach us that encountering one another does not mean having
to look alike or think the same way or do the same things, listening to the
same music or wearing the same football jersey. No, not at all… The culture
of encounter is a call inviting us to dare to keep alive a shared dream. Yes,
a great dream, a dream that has a place for everyone.
The dream for which Jesus gave his life on the cross, for which the
Holy Spirit was poured out on the day of Pentecost and brought fire to the
20
heart of every man and woman, in your hearts and mine, in the hope of
finding room to grow and flourish.
A dream named Jesus, sown by the Father in the confidence that it
would grow and live in every heart. A dream running through our veins,
thrilling our hearts and making them dance whenever we hear the
command: “that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you
also love one another”.

Let Us Reflect
Words, phrases, and clauses are connected to form more
meaningful ideas. In the same manner, we human beings should also be
connected for us to form a bond that will help us surpass life’s
challenges.
God is merciful to humans. He gives us the gifts of service to
sustain us over this pandemic: the great leaders in our country who work
hard to ensure our safety, and all front liners who sacrifice a lot to save
lives. We need a global effort to stop this pandemic. Therefore, each one
of us must be a contributor to the solution. But, despite all the efforts
of the government and the heroic sacrifices of our front liners, the
number of COVID 19 cases is continuously growing. Let us all cooperate
with our government so we may end this global pandemic the soonest
possible time.
