World Environment Day
I vividly remember that I used to pronounce this word as en-vir-on-ment as it was difficult for
me to spell such a heavy word back then. But, the meaning of this pure word was not
recognized then. I didn’t realize that the word “Environment” is not merely a word but entails
a responsibility of every human being to keep the dignity and respect of such a serene word.
On Environment Day, I would like to present some facts related to our Environment and how
its care can impact our modest growth.
Why should you care about the Environment?
I will not waste your time explaining what is Environment as you are already familiar with it.
Now, let’s come to why we should care about it.
Climate Change: Climate crisis, the biggest concern than ever. The concept of Climate
Change is pretty simple to understand but hard to perceive. When the greenhouse gases are
emitted into the atmosphere, the Earth traps more heat, and hence, the global temperature
rises.
The most recent CLIMATE CHANGE crisis is the Uttarakhand Flood of 2021 in Nanda Devi
National Park. It was found out that this disaster was a landslide or a glacier burst at Nanda
Devi. There are tons of different disasters occurring each day, each minute without our
acknowledgment.
Now, it’s entirely your call, either to start respecting your Mother Nature or wait to let it
destroy human civilization.
Air Pollution:
You must be thinking I may be kidding to tell you everything that you may already know
beforehand. But let me inform you that Air Pollution is now considered the most dangerous
health threat globally, accounting for nearly 70 Lakh deaths every year. This report was
published by UNECE (Air Pollution and Health Department). However, only 37 Lakhs
deaths have been accounted for in Covid 19 throughout the world. I am not saying that
fatalities due to Covid don’t matter. After all, we are, indeed, losing human beings. But,
compare the two data presented above. Isn’t it astonishing? Isn’t it driving you towards a
need for change in society? Think and then react.
Even it was published at the Harvard School of Public Health that the countries suffering
from air pollution have very high chances of getting impacted by Covid.
Waste Disposal:
In simple terms, let’s understand waste as the potentially hazardous byproduct of several
human activities. They could come from the manufacturing department, water treatment
units, construction sites, or even from our homes. Now, what else is left for humans than
either going to landfills or incinerating the waste?
Some waste will eventually rot but not all, and then it releases Methane, again a greenhouse
gas, responsible for even more hazardous consequences such as Pollution and Acid rain.
Ocean Acidification:
Now, we all are in a position to understand the simple fact that “Everything needs to be
balanced in Earth.” Ocean Acidification is an increase in the acidity of the oceans due to the
production of Carbon Dioxide by humans. Now, our marine life is having a significant impact
on their survival.
The problems discussed above are not the only ones negatively impacting the Environment,
but these are fundamental problems that we can relate to from our day-to-day work. I hope,
now it’s more apparent to the readers the change that we should seek to save our nature.
Let’s explore further how we can achieve the desired results over protecting nature. Well, on
a broad basis, there are many things that our government and reputed companies are doing to
tackle the problem of environmental shift. But here, I will list few activities that I perform
and so as you can. All these activities require a significantly less amount of time to complete:
1. Composting:
Composting is an art that protects our Environment from the wrath of harmful greenhouse
gases and increases the yield of crops. Organic Farming, one of the popular terms nowadays,
relies on green manure and composting only.
You can compost the waste at your home and use it to build your garden, or if you do not
wish to, collect the heap and dump the manure onto a nearby park. This conscious step taken
by you can drastically reduce the production of Methane and will help to serve Mother
Nature.
1. Plastic Recycling:
Today, the world is more concerned about plastic and its recycling. Different startups are
running to segregate plastic and convert it into valuable products such as Diesel, Plastic
Beads, or Plastic Roads.
You, at your home, can use plastic to make Ecobricks. This is one of the fancy things one can
do without putting much pressure on their work and still can share their goodness with the
Environment.
1. Planting:
One of my favorite pastime jobs is to build a vertical garden and taking care of the saplings.
Yes, it’s a pretty straightforward job to use your old buckets or bottles to plant a flourishing
and ever-blossoming tree.
Several indoor air-purifying plants present in modern times can serve as a beautiful showcase
and cultivate your love towards the immortal Environment.
These are some points I would like to share on today’s occasion of World Environment Day.
If I have forgotten any or are interested in telling me something more innovative that can be
done to save the Environment, let me know under the comments section.
