INTRODUCTION
Today Consumers have higher expectations than ever before. They want
products to match these expectations. They also want accurate, up-to-date and useful
information about what they buy and above all they need Quality.
According to the project work done by the management students Swati Kiran & Kriti
Tiwari, the growth rate of dairy foods due to better supply chain management
practices and strong distribution network in India is steady but is increasing in the
future.
India is the largest milk producer in the world, yet only around 15 per cent of the milk
is processed. The organized liquid milk business is in its infancy and also has large
long-term growth potential.
In commerce, supply chain management (SCM), the management of the flow of goods
and services, involves the movement and storage of raw materials, of work-in-
process inventory, and of finished goods from point of origin to point of
consumption. Interconnected or interlinked networks, channels and node businesses
combine in the provision of products and services required by end customers in a
supply chain.
The topic supply chain management is basically concerned with the following
process of supply chain management and operations, like
Procurement and Production: Activities related to obtaining products and
materials from outside suppliers involve resource planning, supply sourcing,
negotiation, order placement, inbound transportation, storage, handling, and
quality assurance, many of which include the responsibility to coordinate with
suppliers on matters of scheduling, supply continuity (inventory), hedging, and
research into new sources or programs. Procurement has recently been
recognized as a core source of value, driven largely by the increasing trends to
outsource products and services, and the changes in the global ecosystem
requiring stronger relationships between buyers and sellers.
The manufacturing process produces and supplies products to the distribution
channels based on past forecasts. Manufacturing processes must be flexible in
order to respond to market changes and must accommodate mass customization.
Orders are processes operating on a just-in-time (JIT) basis in minimum lot sizes.
Packaging: The packaging industry is evolving. We now know that packaging no
longer refers to a box or a carton, but rather to a coordinated system of preparing
goods for safe, cost-effective, and efficient movement throughout the whole
supply chain that eventually leads to maximizing consumer value, sales and hence
profits. This means packaging also plays an integral role in supply chain
management. It protects products from damage, allows for their efficient
distribution, communicates to the consumers, and is one of the major product
promoters in a competitive marketplace.
Distribution: This concerns the movement of a finished product or service to
customers. In physical distribution, the customer is the final destination of a
marketing channel, and the availability of the product or service is a vital part of
each channel participant's marketing effort. It is also through the physical
distribution process that the time and space of customer service become an
integral part of marketing.

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY
Dairy industry is a vertically integrated industry with both parts of the supply chain
(farm and manufacture) dependent on each other to ensure safe food
The dairy chain starts at raw milk production and ends when other processors,
institutions and consumers utilize products that were created in the value chain.
Supply chain network has ventures to get a good or service from the supplier to the
client. Supply chain network management is an essential part for organizations, and
numerous organizations endeavour to have the most enhanced supply chain network
on the grounds that it normally means lower expenses for the organization. Supply
chain network incorporates various organizations, for example, suppliers, makers,
and the retailers.
Majority of the Market is still unorganized.
Only 5 per cent of the milk is sold through retail chains and 65 - 70 per cent is
delivered to the homes by milk agents. Carton milk or packaged milk has been
growing at 24 per cent annually
The project is an attempt to know the supply chain management practices adopted by
Param dairy. Despite of having the large production and distribution base unable to
gain high market share due to competitors like Mother dairy, Amul, Metro dairy, Red
Cow and others. For this purpose a research is to undertaken to find out the
challenges faced by supply chain of Param dairy.
