PAST PAPER QUESTION ON GRENADA

Question
(a) Give THREE reason some Grenadians were unhappy with Eric Gairy’s government? (9
marks)
Answer
1. At first he seemed to be a leader that cared for his people and his country, but as time
progressed Gairy began to act eccentric or strange.
2. He said that he believed in mysticism and UFO. The people of Grenada were entirely
embarrassed by this public speech on these 2 topics.
3. There was only 1 hospital on the hospital. Almost ½ the population was employed. The
number of persons living below poverty increased on a daily basis. Gairy still did nothing to help
his people.
4. Gairy also became a corrupt and brutal leader. He used the Mangoose gang ti kill anyone who
opposed him.
5. Gairy squandered public funds, he owned thirty estates while the poor has very little land.
6. Gairy did not do anything to improve education. There were very few schools in Grenada.
There were 80 children in one class at Primary school.

(b) What did the People’s Revolutionary Government try to bring to Grenada?
Answer
1. They improved health care - They built more health clinics, hospitals and made other
improvements to the health care sector. It took the strain off the one general hospital that
previously served the entire island. Additionally, health care was made free to all Grenadines.
2. They improved education. Maurice Bishop built a number of schools to solve the
overcrowding of classrooms. He also introduced secondary education, since more children could
now co to school, there was a decrease in the rate of illiteracy. Many Grenadian students were
given scholarships to Cuba and the Soviet Union.
3. The PRG also promoted agricultural development.
4. The PRG extended legal rights to women.
5. The PRG created tourism initiatives
6. They international airport linking Grenada to the rest of the world.
(c) Discuss FIVE reasons why the People’s Revolutionary Government was removed from
office?
1. Dishonest party members - Some of the party members were very dishonest. They charged
bills for personal purchases to the government to pay for it.
2. Some of the citizens were discontent with the pace of reforms. Several of the projects could
not be sustained and others had to be cancelled because of lack of international funding.
3. Grenada and the People’s Revolutionary Government were alienated in the international
market. They had to depend on themselves and Cuban for economic. Survival. This was never
going to be enough given the level of reconstruction work that they had to do and the fact that
they were still a relatively young nation it was only 9 years since Grenada got independence
from Britain (1974).
4. The government of Grenada received very little support from the other Caribbean nations. The
rest of the Caribbean was pro-America. Edward Seaga and the capitalist JLP won the 1 980
elections, one year after Bishop’s revolution. This meant that Bishop lost a key ally in Michael
Manley. He was now basically isolated from the rest of the British Caribbean.
5. Division in the PRG – There was division in the party. Members of Bishop’s party felt that he
was not radical enough. Bishop felt compelled to expel them. They formed a new party called the
Revolutionary Military Council. on October 13, 1983, led by the Deputy Prime Minister,
Bernard Coard, the Revolutionary Military Council launched a coup against Bishop, captured
him and placed him under on house arrest. They assassinated/killed Maurice Bishop on October
19, 1983.
