IMPRESSIONISM: 20TH CENTURY ART MOVEMENT

Background Information for Learners

Impressionism is an art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose

independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s. This movement uses expressive
brushstrokes, emphasis on movement rather than on clarity of form and optical effects of color and artists usually
paint outdoors (en plein air). The name Impressionism was coined from the title of a work by French painter Claude
Monet, Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise)

ARTISTS OF IMPRESSIONISM

1. Claude Monet: He is the most influential in the Impressionism movement and best known for his landscape
paintings particularly flower gardens and water lily ponds. Famous artworks: La Promenade (1875), Bridge Over a
Pond Of Water Lilies (1899), Irises in Monet’s Garden (1900)

2. Edouard Manet: He is one of the first 19th century artists to depict modern-life subjects and his works considered
as marking the birth of modern art. Famous artworks: Argenteuil (1874), Rue Mosnier Decked with Flags (1878)

3. Auguste Renoir: One of the central figures of the impressionist movement. His works focus on snapshots of real
life, full of sparkling color and light. Famous artworks: Dancer (1874), A Girl with a Watering Can (1876)
