Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS COPE

Abstract

This study aims to know the effectiveness of religious youth

organization in Oslob specifically the Youth for Christ. The researchers

conducted a survey from the active members of this organization provided

with them survey sheets as research instruments of the researchers. The

findings of the study can justify whether this organization is effective enough

to evangelize the youth of Oslob. The researchers found that the Youth for

Christ in Oslob can really help improve not only the spiritual life of the youth

but also their way of living and dealing with things.

xv

Introduction

According to St. John Paul II, “the youth are the hope of the Church”.

He believed that the youth have so much to offer for the improvement of the

Church. But from those words, can anyone say that the youth are the hope of

the church? Is there any chance that the youth can change the world

knowing the difference of the youth from the other generation?

Majority of the youth nowadays are hungry and thirsty of God’s word.

Many are now directed to the undesirable path--computer games, social

media, drugs, premarital sex, etc. The youth lacks time and sometimes forgot

where they truly came from. They forgot to even thank and praise our Lord.

Others are busy doing unproductive things to disturb themselves from going

to Church. They prefer to enjoy their lives than attending the Holy Mass

without knowing the importance of having Christ in our life. They need to be

evangelized. They need to be introduced to our God. They need to go back

from where they truly belong. They need to know their purposes in the

Church and be our hope.

Youth for Christ (YFC) is a religious organization that helps the

Catholic Church to evangelize youth and bring them closer to God. It is a

Christ- centered organization that helps many youth to understand more of

the greatness of God’s love. Its vision is “Young People Being and Bringing
xvi

Christ Where ever we are”. The Youth for Christ is a family ministry under the

Couples for Christ (CFC) Family Ministry, a Catholic charismatic community

and family life movement who stands for God.

There are different programs in YFC: The Community Based, High

School Based, Campus Based, and TORCH (Toward Renewal in Christ).

Community Based program is commonly used in rural places. It is also used

in Oslob. But, is that effective enough to evangelize the youth living in Oslob?

This group aims to test the effectiveness of this organization to the

youth of this community towards its members inside and outside the school

campus. This study will be helpful to solve the problem of the youth in Oslob

using the Youth for Christ Community Based program. In this way, the

organization will be able to find more ways on how to solve the issue of the

youth and help the Church evangelize the youth so that they will be directed

to the right path and be the hope of our Church.

Statement of the Problem

1. Why do youths join Youth for Christ?

2. How does involvement to Youth for Christ- Oslob affects one’s

spiritual life?
xvii

3. How can active participation of the youth to the YFC activities change

their way of living?

Significance of the Study

This study is eminently readable and worth exploring for pleasure as well as

the knowledge for the following:

YFC leaders. They will be able to find more way on how to evangelize the

youth especially in Oslob that are effective and will surely help solve the

problem of the youth and bring them back to Christ.

Students. They will learn and get information about the status of the youth

and their place in the Church that will help them fulfill St. John Paul II’s

statement. They will also be inform about YFC and maybe someday will

become one of the evangelizers of God.

Parents. They will be able to know the possible effects of allowing their

children join religious organization just like Youth for Christ. And possible

support them to become one of the members and start changing the world.

Future Researchers. This study will give them an idea how religious

organizations works especially the one we have in Oslob specifically the

Youth for Christ. This will be a helpful source for their research in the future.
xviii

Definition of Terms

For clearer and better understanding of the ideas expressed in this study, a

definition of some terms is presented in the research paper. Definitions from

reliable sources have been found to be clear and helpful; hence, it was used

in this study.

Youth refers to the young people who are in the adolescent stage.

Church refers to the people who are worshiping God. It is also known as the
people of Christ.

Evangelize refers to convert or to be convert to Christianity.

Religious organization refers to the group of people who are their goal is to
worship God and serve Him always.

Hope of the Church is the term use to refer the people who are expected to
save the people of Christ.

Spiritual Life refers to the relationship between the human being and the
Lord.

Youth for Christ (YFC) refers to an organization under the Couples for
Christ built to evangelize the youth.

Couples for Christ (CFC) is a group of people whose mission is to renew

and strengthen Christian values.
xix

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

The youth are the young people of our society. They play a vital role in

the Catholic Church. They are the next to replace the older people and take

care of our Church. It is in them that lies the future of the Church. “The youth

are not only the hope of the Church of Goa but also the Church of today.

They form horizontal and vertical communion in the Church as “Body of

Christ” and as “People of God.” Therefore, as Church they are sharers in her

missional identity (see Vatican II, Ad Gentes, 2). Hence, the participation of

youth in evangelization is not a choice but a responsibility” (Pereira, 2). The

youth are great evangelizers especially to their fellow young people. They

are creative and are open to changes. They have strong critical skills, having

increased their knowledge through study and life experiences, and being led

to think, reflect and judge. They are questioning young people, who want

answers for what they see happening around them. They are committed

youth who want and claim honesty, truthfulness, justice and consistency.

They are demanding youth who want and claim our rights at our work and in

the society. With the youth, proclaiming God’s word would be an easier

responsibility. Together with the rising technology, they can easily share the

good news to others through text and even social media.

xx

However, the youth distant themselves from the Church. “Most of

them are relatively detached from religious concerns and they often

acknowledge that they have not been informed or educated in this respect”

(Anatrella, 2003). The youth of this generation are hungry and thirsty of God.

They lack the knowledge of God and are too distracted of the rising trends

and technology. They tend to spend majority of their time surfing, scrolling

and sharing random stuff in the internet than attending the mass. “Research

carried out by church statistician Dr. Peter Brierley in 2006 suggested church

attendance among teenagers was less than half of this, with 6% of 11-14

year-olds and 5 % of 15-18 year-olds attending church” (Rudgar, 2017). They

prefer to hang out with their friends and party than pray the rosary together

with their families. They become more immature and insecure of their

actions. “They often express a desire to become more confident in

themselves, and they wish to free themselves of doubts regarding existence

and to lose their fear of the idea of emotional commitment. They sometimes

request help from their parents but they feel awkward about it” (Anatrella,

2003). They are not only distant with the Church but also with their families

and sometimes confused of who they really are.

The world is changing rapidly and so are the youth. The Church must

cope with this changes to increase its population and bring the Word of

Christ into their hearts. The Church has different programs to address this

problem. One of them and the most effective lately are these youth
xxi

ministries. Youth Ministry, also commonly referred to as youth group, is an

age-specific religious ministry that involves and engages with young

people with the intention of imparting the Catholic faith to them and inviting

them to practice and live out the faith in their lives. One of the well-known

youth ministries in Oslob is the Youth for Christ. Youth for Christ (YFC) is the

youth arm of Couples for Christ (CFC) --a pontifical catholic Christian

movement intended for the renewal

and strengthening of Christian family life. The Youth for Christ aims to help

the young adults undergo a "conversion to Christ" experience. They help the

young adult experience healing and reconciliation with the immediate

members of their family, especially their parents through the youth camps

-the entry point to the Youth for Christ (YFC). It is in the youth camp they will

hear the Word of God proclaimed by other young adults like themselves in an

environment of fun and excitement, where they do not experience any form

of pressure from adults.

“My favorite part of being in the community is the sharing. Sharing

your life experiences with other people and being able to help one another

face all the challenges each and every one of us face. That no matter how

many times you’ve failed, no matter how many times you’ve fallen down,

there will always be someone to help you stand up and accept you with open

arms and remind you that you are loved and prayed for. Being an instrument

of answered prayers to each other” (Gachalian, 2018). Being in Youth for

xxii

Christ is one way of responding to the calling of our Lord. Billie Hanks, Jr

stated that every Christian has a calling. “God Himself is faithfully calling us

into a life of fellowship with His Son” (Hanks, 60). He wanted His people to

follow and be like Christ.

Our Lord is calling us. He wants us to be back to His fold and help

proclaim the truth. “God wants to redeem human beings from Satan and

reconcile them to Himself so we can fulfill the five purposes He created us

for: to love Him, to be part of His family, to become like Him, to serve Him,

and to tell others about Him” (Warren, 282). These five purposes are the

mission given by the Lord to the people He made. The Lord wanted His

people to fulfill these to bring them back to Him and experience eternal life.

People should go back to the Church especially the youth being the

hope of our Church. The Youth for Christ should be influential enough to

bring the youth back to the Church. With the youth being obedient, the

Church can easily cope up to the different changes of our Word and maintain

the words of God alive. In the end, God’s love will not change no matter how

the traditions and practices change in time. He will remain and wait for the

respond of His children to His calling.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Data Gathering

The data are gathered by communicating with the respondents in any way

that is possible. The respondents of this research are the active members of

YFC-Oslob. This research uses stratified sampling method. The researchers

used the social media as medium of communication to the respondents that

are studying in the city. Other respondents that are around Oslob answered

the research questionnaire given by the researchers. The researchers met

some of the members for research purposes. The survey was held during

free time of both the respondents and the researchers.

Research Design

This is mixed method type of research for it gathers data using quantitative

and qualitative type of research in a study (see Appendix A). Quantitative

type of research is a structured way of collecting and analyzing data obtained

from the respondents. It provides statements that are helpful to assess the

organization. On the other hand, qualitative type of research helps the

researchers understand more about the organization through the

xxiv

respondents’ own perspectives. The results are basing on the reasons and

opinions of the respondents to the given qualitative questions.

Methodology

This study uses stratified sampling method. This type of method was

chosen because the topic is not applicable to everyone rather than the YFC

members. The topic is only limited to those YFC members who are actively

participating the different activities of the organization.

Research Environment

The research was held in the respected houses of the respondents around

Oslob. The researchers visited the houses of the active members of YFC to

conduct the survey personally in case of any misunderstanding between the

researchers and the respondents (see Appendix C).

Research Subject

There are 10 respondents who answered the research questionnaires. These

respondents are eligible to answer the given questionnaires because they

are members of the mentioned organization and are actively participating the

activities of the organization. They are all citizens of Oslob and are the only

ones that can give a reliable responds to the topic.

Research Instrument
xxv

This research uses survey sheets to gather data from the respondents. In

others cases, especially to those members who are studying in the city are

obliged to respond with the use of social media accounts. The researchers

interviewed some of the youth members using social media with the research

questionnaires as guide. Some of the respondents that are around Oslob

respond through answering the questionnaires themselves. Through this

way, the researchers can prove the topic accurately.

they have noticed changes not only in their spiritual life but also in their daily

living. Before they became a part of the YFC organization, majority of the

respondents said that they were lost and kept on disappointing their parents.

question. Majority of them stated that joining in the organizations helps the

youth to become responsible, faithful and God-fearing citizens of the

community. They will be kinder, loving and forgiving people. Upon joining, the

youth will be introduced to the Lord and will be taught about the things He

wanted His people to do. Some stated that they will be disciplined because

they will have the YFC mentally which is thinking they are a YFC and should

be good models. Others also said that the youth who will be joining are

Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusion, and

recommendations of the study.

Summary of Findings
27

The youths join in the YFC organization because they believe that

participating and becoming a part in this organization will be able to help

them become a better Christian. This belief can be proven through their

answers in the survey. There are also some of the respondents who joined

the organization purely because of recreational purposes. The given

statements in the survey sheets focus on the different effects that the youth

may experience as they became members of this organization. And their

responses prove that this organization gives a great impact to their lives as

young believers.

The active members of the YFC organization were able to say that

they have experienced a great improvement in their spiritual life. They said

that they became closer to God and can always feel His presence. They

became more faithful and were able to strengthen their trust in the Lord.

Unlike before that they were lost in life. Unaware of where they are, what

they do, and sometime why they exist. They do not even know that there is a

living God. But everything they believed before changed as they get involved

to this organization and actively participated in its activities.

The active participation of the youth will help them maintain the

changes they have experienced and add more changes to experience full

conversion in their lives. The youth will not change immediately after the

youth camp. They should be actively participating for a full conversion. Their

active participation is their way of devotion to the Lord. The youth will change
28

because they will be constantly encourage to spread the good news. Active

participation will maintain the change the youth have experienced that can

bring changes to the community they are living.

Conclusion

From the results, the researchers concluded that joining in the Youth

for Christ in Oslob can really help improve the youths’ spiritual life and their

way of living. The activities that are provided by the organization can help

deepen their faith and trust in the God. Even though some of them said that

they only join for enjoyment, they were still able to experience the same

conversion like others. Youth for Christ is a good instrument that the Church

can use to help the youth and change them to help fulfill God’s purposes of

their lives. The organization does not only help them change spiritually but

also in their way of living and dealing with things. Being an active member of

this organization, it can transform them into responsible people of the

community. It is also proven that joining the Youth for Christ does not only

help them know Him and worship Him but also collaborate with other youth

that can be their friends and form another a family of faith and love under the

grace of God.

Recommendation
29

The entire research made by the researchers came up with several

recommendations addressed to the YFC leaders, students, parents, and to

the future researchers. These recommendations were made in the hopes of

improving the evangelizing ways of the Youth for Christ in Oslob to bring

more youth back to the Church. The following recommendations are purely

basing on the interpretations of the gathered data.

To the YFC leaders, the researchers advise that they will be more

committed to their responsibilities as leaders of the organization. In this way,

they can help the new members experience what they have to experience

and become one of the God’s chosen missionaries. The researchers also

advise them to impart the teaching of this organization to the hearts of the

members so that it will be easier for them to share it with others.

To the students, the researchers suggested that they will be open

minded to these kinds of organization especially the Youth for Christ. In this

way, they will be informed of the different positive effects of joining in this

organization. They will also know that joining in the mentioned organization

will be helpful for them to become better person holistically. And they will also

experience the full conversion like the other youth member who are actively

participating in this organization.

To the parents, the researchers recommended to allow their children

to join the organization and willingly support them in the different activities

the organization will organize. This is because the organization can give their
30

children positive impact in their daily and spiritual life. It is not only the youth

who can benefit to this changes but also them as their parents. These

changes of their children will not only affect inner self but also in their actions

and the way they cope up with situations and things in their lives.

To the future researchers, the researchers recommended to focus

studying on “The Impact of Social Media to the Spiritual Life of the Young

People”, “The Influence of New Trends to the Spiritual Life of Young

Believers”, or “ The Hindrances to the Spiritual Life of the Youth”. Tese

recommended titles will allow the future researchers focus on the impact of

different factors to their spiritual life.

Joining such organizations can really give great impact to the lives of

the young believers. That is why people should encourage them to

participate in this kinds of organization. Thus, joining Youth for Christ in

Oslob helps deepen the youths’ spiritual life.
