Introduction to Chemistry Concepts

This document provides an introduction to chemistry. It defines chemistry as the branch of science dealing with the study of matter, its structure, composition, changes, and energy involved. It describes the basic units of matter - atoms, molecules, compounds - and how they are classified. It also mentions that changes in matter can involve properties like flammability, oxidation, and acidity.

INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY

Chemistry
- the branch of science that deals with the study
of matter: its structure, composition, changes it
undergoes, and the energy change involved.
CLASSIFICATION OF
MATTER
Atom

It is the smallest unit of matter that has the

characteristic properties of a chemical element. As
such, the atom is the basic building block of matter.
Molecule

- A group of atoms that are chemically bonded

together.
Compound

- is a pure substance made of two or more

different elements held by chemical bonds; formed
from the reaction between two or more substances.
CHANGES IN MATTER
Example: Flammability, ease of oxidation, acidity
Let’s test your knowledge!!!

1. Which of the following is a PURE SUBSTANCE?

A. air B. nitrogen C. vinegar D. tap water

2. All of the following is a pure substance EXCEPT

A. carbon dioxide B. table salt C. aluminum D. deionized water

3. A sample was determined to have a sharp boiling point, i.e. narrow range. The sample is most likely a

4. A white substance, upon exposure to atmosphere, turned brown. What property of matter is involved In
the observation?
A. physical B. chemical

5. Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of a metal

A. lustrous B. malleable C. gas at room temperature D. electrical conductor

6. A sample was separated into its components using filtration. The sample is a

Let’s test your knowledge!!!

7. T/F Chemistry is the study of the interaction between matter and energy.

8. T/F Air is a homogenous mixture.

9. T/F Mercury is the only metal that exists as liquid at room temperature.

10. T/F Physical properties can be used in identifying an unknown substance.

ASSIGNMENT #2
Deadline: Sept. 30, 2021; 7pm

1. (10 pts.) Discuss 3 importance/uses of

a) physical properties
b) chemical properties

2. (10 pts.) Give 3 instances in your daily life where chemical and
