Literature and Combined Arts

Literature; designated in the literary works, according to particular culture and country

Literary works are grouped under large categories

1. imaginative literature – literature of power; novel, short stories, poem and place; interprets human experience

2. non-fiction – literature of knowledge; essay and biographies interpret actual facts

 Literature are written works collectively, especially those of enduring. importance, exhibiting creative
imagination and artistic skill.
o Elements of literature is language
o Builder is the writer
 Literature comes from the Latin word literature meaning writing; literatus which means learning; and thus, is
literate for learned.
 It is both oral and written work characterized by expressive or imaginative writing, nobility of thoughts,
universality and timeliness.
 The best way to understand human nature fully and to know a nation completely is to study literature.

TWO MAIN DIVISIONS OF LITERATURE

PROSE; imaginative

 Form - Written in paragraph form


 Language - Expressed in ordinary form
 Appeal - To the intellect
 Aim - To convince, instruct, imitate and reflect

POETRY; highest form of talks, there’s a feeling in a particular word, ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythms

 Form - Written in stanza or verse form


 Language - Expressed in metrical, rhythmical and figurative language; metaphorical
 Appeal - To the emotion; tone
 Aim - Stir the imagination and set an idea of how life should be

PROSE

 Prose drama; script and dialogue


o a drama in prose form. It consists entirely of dialogues in prose, and is meant to be acted on stage.
 Essay
o a short literary composition which is expository in nature. The author shares some of his thoughts,
feelings, experiences or observations on some aspects of life that has interested him.

Prose Fiction; represent through narration; structural unity of the plot


 Novel
o a long fictitious narrative with a complicated plot. It may have a main plot and one or more subplots that
develop with the main plot. Characters and actions representative of the real life of past or present
times are portrayed in a plot. It is made up of chapters.
 Short story
o a fictitious narrative compressed into one unit of time, place, and action. It deals with a single character
interest, a single emotion or series of emotions called forth by a single situation. It is distinguished from
the novel by its compression.
o Can be read in one sitting

Drama and Theatre; performance

 a story re-created by actors on stage in front of an audience.

Types of Drama

 Tragedy
o serious in nature in which the central character comes to some sad and disastrous ending and also
portray.
 Melodrama
o the emphasis is on the action rather on the character. Action is a happy ending.

Types of Melodrama

 Romantic Comedy
o light amusing tales of lovers in some dilemma which is finally solved happily.
 Farce
o light humorous play whose emphasis is on the jokes, humorous physical actions, ludicrous situations and
impossible characters.
 Comedy of Manners
o “drawing room comedy” is sophisticated and sometimes satirical. It uses witty dialogues and characters
are usually high society types and situations are unreal.

Dance

 involves the movement of the body and the feet in rhythm.

Types of Dances

 Ethnologic
o include folk dancing associated with national and cultural groups.
 Social or Ballroom Dances
o popular type of dancing generally performed by pairs.
 Ballet
o a formalized type of dance which originated in the royal courts of the middle Ages. They may be either
solo or concerted dances and generally built around a theme or story
 Modern
o are sometimes called contemporary interpretative dances and represents rebellion against the classical
formalism of ballet. It is a personal communication of moods and themes.
 Musical dances
o dances performed by soloists, groups, choruses in theatres, nightclubs, motion pictures, and television.
It combines various forms of ballet, modern, tap, and acrobatics.

CINEMA

 Of all the art forms today, cinema appears to have the greatest appeal. Cinema is a term that embraces many
types of films or movies: cartoons, newsreels, commercials, industrial films, educational films, social
documentaries, and even home movie
