2017 RAM 5.7L Exhaust Manifold Guide

Replacing an exhaust manifold is generally not a difficult task, but issues could arise if the new manifold is not properly installed. Leaks in the exhaust system could occur if fittings are not tightened securely, which would allow exhaust gases to escape with an audible noise. Additionally, failure to properly align the manifold could result in contact with other vehicle components, causing rattling or vibration noises. Proper installation and inspection for leaks after starting the engine can help ensure a smooth replacement process.

 Please indicate if there are any issues that can occur when replacing an
exhaust manifold.
The exhaust manifold is the component of your vehicle that transports exhaust
gases to the exhaust system. Visible cracking on the part's surface, exhaust smells
in the inside of your car, and a loss of performance are all signs that your manifold
needs to be replaced. Excessive noise coming from your bonnet might be a sign of
a malfunctioning manifold, whilst noise coming from the back of the car is more
likely to be a sign of a damaged or faulty exhaust. The exhaust manifold is easily
accessible from the hood and is simply attached into the main engine block, thus
replacing it is not a difficult or complicated task. You will also need to jack up
your automobile to reach beneath it and access the exhaust outflow pipe.
After you have done the reattachment job, the simplest method to ensure that
everything is in place is to start the engine. Gasses will escape from the engine if
there are any difficulties with the exhaust manifold installation, and there may also
be a noise connected with this leak. To remedy any difficulties, locate the leak and
tighten the fittings surrounding it.

Answer to the best of your knowledge the following scenarios.

 A customer comes in with a loud rattle from underneath of their vehicle at
idle or while driving.

The exhaust system may have gotten misaligned if you hear rattling under the car.
If you hear a loud metallic vibration, something is either contacting the exhaust
pipe or a clamp, support bracket, or mounting is loose. Your exhaust is held in
place by hangers and brackets. If they become rusted, cracked, or break off
altogether, the exhaust housing will be subjected to additional stress, perhaps
leading to premature exhaust failure.
Because it is the furthest away from the engine and the most prone to be damaged
by acidic moisture, the silencer is generally the first element of the exhaust to be
addressed.

 A customer complains of a loud ticking type noise from the engine area
when the vehicle is "cold" started.
If you notice a definite noise coming from around the exhaust manifold, it is time
to investigate. An exhaust leak in this region will sound like a ticking or puffing.
Next, listen for leaks in your exhaust system's unions and joints. A leak will sound
more like a buzz, hum, or your car or truck will sound like a hot rod until you get
to your catalytic converter and back from there. The greater the noise, the closer it
is to the engine.
