Issues of Poor Drainage Systems

This document discusses a poor drainage system in a rural Filipino household. The drainage system discharges waste directly into the soil without treatment, which causes several problems: unsightly conditions, bad odors, mosquito breeding, and risks to health. Proper drainage and waste treatment are necessary to prevent issues. An underground septic tank would be a suitable solution, as it treats waste on-site before discharge. Connecting to a sewage system, if available, or building an appropriately sloped concrete drainage canal would also improve waste management and public health.

Lack of drainage system

A well-planned and built plumbing system must include with attention to plumbing rules and
principles in order to effectively accomplish the comfortability and continuous used of water and also
its disposal, or simply plumbing operations that is within the house or building. However, in every
structure, we always confront various plumbing system concerns. Just like the situation below;

In this image, it shows the flow or disposal

of the waste from the sink and lavatory.
Obviously, it has a poor drainage system
which is likely to be normal in Filipinos’
household. This cause lot of problems and
issues, some are the following;

• Absence of a proper sewage

disposal.

• It just discharged its waste into

surface soil without any treatment.

• Unsightly and bad odor.

• Exposed to flies and animals such as

rats.

• Mosquitoes breeding

• A contaminated flooding

• Spread of diseases
• Normal life disruption
The Basic Principles of the Plumbing Code THAT IT DIDN’T MEET

17. If there is no sewer system in the area, suitable provision shall be made for the disposal of building
sewage by some accepted method of sewage treatment and disposal, such as a septic tank.

21. Plumbing shall be installed with due regard to the preservation of the strength of structural
members and the prevention of damage to walls and other surfaces through fixture usage.

22. Sewage or other waste from plumbing system which may be deleterious to surface or sub-surface
waters shall not be discharged into the ground or into any waterway, unless first rendered innocuous
through subjection to some acceptable form of treatment.

8. The drainage system shall be designed, constructed and maintained to safeguard against fouling,
deposit of solids, clogging and with adequate cleanouts so arranged that the pipes may be readily
cleaned.

9. All piping shall be of durable NAMPAP-APPROVED materials, free from defective workmanship,
designed and constructed by Registered Master Plumbers to ensure satisfactory service.

Every fixture, even wall mounted tap, should have a proper drainage to prevent any issues
such as contamination. Waste treatment and disposal facilities are essential for maintaining a safe
domestic and communal environment. Wastes should be extracted from each fixture as quickly as
possible using a system of drainpipes that prevents any further human interaction. If there is a public
sewer within a reasonable distance of the property, the building waste system shall drain to it.

Observation and Solutions

The given situation is located in a rural area where it doesn’t have a proper sewage disposal. It just
discharged its waste into surface soil without any treatment.

Normally here in the Philippines the domestic waste goes to canal but according to principle
17, if there is no access, a sewage disposal through an approved method of treatment should be used,
such to a septic tank. It is underground chamber made of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic through which
domestic wastewater flows for basic treatment. One end is linked to a fixture's inlet wastewater pipe
and the other to a septic drain field. These pipe connections are often constructed with a T pipe,
enabling liquid to enter and exit without disturbing any surface crust.

A properly designed and normally operating septic system is odor-free. Aside from annual
inspection and emptying, a septic tank should last for decades with little care, lasting around 50 years.
Lastly, it should be placed such that it does not bother the residents of the house or those of
neighboring properties.
A contaminated flooding, place for mosquitoes breeding and rats. As it is an open drain it is also
unsightly and causes bad odor.

One of the primary issues with this type of sink drainage is that the water does not flow
constantly through the sewers and may pool in some areas, causing mosquitos to breed. It is also
directed to the soil, which may result in an unpleasant odor over time and perhaps becoming a habitat
for rats and other animals. The incorrect slope of the drainage discharge is one of the reasons for this.
The undesirable impact can be avoided by repairing the surface slope so that water can flow freely.

If there is a nearby sewage access, build a concrete base canal within the property and
connect it to the street sewer. This solution will aid in the appropriate disposal of domestic waste.
Rather than utilizing a simple galvanized sheet for sink drainage runoff. Connect the fixture and the
canal with a pvc pipe as well. Because it provides a far better method of evaluating the adequate
cleanliness of the area.

The odor of dirty stagnant water in open drains just like in this situation is unpleasant and
unattractive for those who live there and also for those who are near it. They may also be
inconvenient, particularly in areas with a lot of children, as they may play near contaminated water,
endangering their health. Aside from proper drainage system is proper circulation of the smell. A vent
stack could be used to prevent the odor next to the house.
