NELSON MANDELA
Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa on 18th July, 1918. He started to study at the university in
1938 and he decided to study law. He finished university in 1943. He lived and worked in
Johannesburg. He was very interested in politics and thought all time to change the political system.
He became President of the ANC (The African National Congress) in the Transvaal in 1952. He had
two children with Evelyn, she was his first wife. They divorced in 1957 and in the same year he met a
woman named Winnie Madikizela. Nelson and Winnie got married a year later and they also had 2
children. In 1964 he went to prison. He stayed there for 26 years and was in solitary confinement for
eighteen years. But people never forgot him. And in 1994, only four years after he left prison, he
became President of South Africa. Nelson and Winnie Mandela divorced in 1996 and two years later
he married his third wife, Graça Machel. When he was President, he wrote a fantastic book about his
life called Long Walk to Freedom.

china. Western styles, like jazz and rap clearly influence his music. However, his music is very Chinese
in its instruments and sounds. Cui Jian says his music expresses the feelings of Chinese Young
people.
