Critic's Review - Dance Video by Marie Cris Parao

The critic reviews a dance video by Marie Cris Parao that shows promise but still has room for improvement. While it is a step above typical TikTok videos, the dance lacks full use of the space and dynamic movement. The outdoor setting did not match the music chosen. The movements were timed well but need to incorporate more footwork and use of the entire space. Overall, the video indicates growth for the young artist but has yet to overcome the self-focused nature of TikTok dances.

Critic’s Review – Dance Video by Marie Cris Parao

Dance. For someone of my generation who has had the opportunity to see performances of
world-class dance troops, both modern and classical, Broadway musicals, operas, time-
honored, intricate traditional dances in many countries from Polynesia to India, even sports-
related dance such as synchronized swimming and ice dancing, one can only deplore the
current generation’s obsession with TikTok and their belief that two-dimensional arm
movements and the shaking of body parts constitutes dance.

In this video, done for a school homework assignment, choreographer and dancer Marie Cris
attempts to move away from the TikTok genera towards something approaching real dance.

Already the video shot at distance and in landscape mode is a break-away from the up-
close, vertical format of TikTok videos. This provides the choreographer and dancer a wider
range of possibilities to use 3-dimensional space. Indeed, there was some use of the space
for forward-to-back and side-to-side dance movement, however, it was not fully exploited.

The outdoor setting for the piece was also a breakaway from the typical TikTok use of
interior living quarters such as bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. It was however an
incongruous choice of music for the setting of the green outdoors. This could have been
compensated for by a more judicious choice of “costume” – for example a dark colored
ensemble of tight-fitting, long-sleeved shirt and leggings would more easily hold the
spectator’s attention against the background and be more appropriate to the modern music
and chorography chosen.

The overall dance piece of mostly robotic and abrupt movements was in harmony with the
music selected and crisply timed to the beat. The artist also gave brief demonstrations of her
ability to incorporate foot and leg work into a piece which have been largely missing in her
previous works. This aspect of the chorography needs to be extended further while
incorporating greater use of the dance space.

While very promising and a distinct improvement over the artist’s earlier works, there is still a
lack of dynamic and physical power and control of movement associated with, dare I say it,
real dance. The work has not yet fully overcome one of the main failings of the TikTok
genera, mainly the artist’s own obsession of watching their face on playback. Dance is first
and foremost about the movement and form as observed by the spectators.

Nevertheless, this video demonstrates the maturing work of a promising young artist in an
on-going process of evolution.
