CHAPTER I
PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
The Philippines is known for a relatively high temperature and high humidity.
That is why aircon is very important in the Philippines because of the hot climate. The
air conditioner ranks as one of the most important modern inventions in history, allowing
for climate control of homes and businesses. As the heat and humidity of summer beat
down on us, it's hard to imagine a world without it.
Most people use air conditioners to stay more comfortable in their homes or
offices during hot and humid summer weather. Under extreme conditions, air
conditioners may keep older people and other vulnerable people safer from heat-
induced health problems. Air conditioners are used in many commercial settings to
increase comfort and decrease heat stress on delicate machinery such as computers
and reduce food spoilage in grocery stores and restaurants (Berkeys, 2016). Apart from
being comfortable, Aircon is expensive because of the machine's materials and the
energy consumption cost; the higher the horsepower, the more expensive it is.
As the daytime became more and more unbearable, the researchers ended up
choosing this topic. The researchers chose this topic mainly because of the hot weather
here in the Philippines. The constant high temperature was the reason this came up to
the researchers' minds. This homemade air conditioner can help take the edge off and
make it a little more bearable. Not only that, but it's also very inexpensive, easy to
make, somewhat effective, and can be used over and over again. It is providing cool air
without consuming a lot of electricity. This particular design is a low-maintenance
version. It is not just easy to do. The materials needed to conduct the product are also
cheap and easy to find, which is sufficient for people to make.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
Generally, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of a custom-built air
conditioner from foam box, plastic bottles and DC fan. Specifically, it seeks to answer
the following question:
1. Is there a significant difference between dry ice and water ice in terms of lowest
temperature attained?
2. Is there a significant different between Dry Ice and Water ice in terms of area
covered?
3. How much will it cost?
4. How long will it last?
Scope and Delimitation
This study primarily focuses on comparing dry ice and water ice as an efficient air
conditioner that reduces the blazing heat of the sun, energy consumption in a more
cheaper way. Moreover, the lowest temperature attained, area covered, how much will it
cost and the lifespan of the homemade air conditioner. The study will be conducted in
San Isidro.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
Under normal atmospheric pressure, dry ice undergoes the process
of sublimation, transitioning directly from solid to gaseous form. In general, at room
temperature and normal pressure, it sublimates at a rate of 5 to 10 pounds every 24
hours. Because of the very low temperature of dry ice, it is used for refrigeration.
Packing frozen food in dry ice allows it to remain frozen without the mess that would be
involved with other cooling methods, such as water from melted ice (Jones, 2019).
In this paper, the concept and domestic application of ice-storage air-conditioning
are briefly introduced. Especially, the characteristics and working principle of four kinds
of widely used systems, ice-ball type, ice-on-coil type, ice debris sliding type and ice
crystal type ice-storage air-conditioning system are expounded. By analyzing the
advantages, disadvantages and the application status of different ice-storage air-
conditioning systems, the application status of ice-storage air-conditioning technology is
summarized. Finally, the applications of ice-storage air-conditioning system are
summarized. It can provide reference for the research and application of ice-storage air-
conditioning system in the future (Kang et al., 2017)
The primary objective of air-conditioning is to provide comfortable conditions of
the people. Most of the air-conditioning units in service provide comfort air conditioning,
the purpose of which is to supply comfortable conditions for people. Summer cooling
systems have become a standard utility in large buildings throughout the world. Even in
climates where summer temperatures are not high, large buildings may have cooled in
order to remove the heat generated internally by people, lights, and other electrical
equipment. In hot climates, the existence of summer cooling systems is the difference
between workers performing effectively and not. The function of a heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is to provide for more than human
health and comfort. The HVAC system produces heat, cool air, and ventilation, and
helps control dust and moisture, which can lead to adverse health effects. The variables
to be controlled are temperature, air quality, air motion, and relative humidity.
Temperature must be maintained uniformly throughout the heated/cooled area
(McQuiston et al.,2005)
It aims to present renewable air-conditioning as a sustainable system for varied
climatic conditions with the feasibility of optimization to reduce the level of energy
consumption and the rate of carbon emissions. Extreme use of air-conditioning has
caused substantial growth in the level of energy consumption and carbon emissions.
This fact clarifies the requirement for considering improvement applications of
renewable energy sources for air-conditioning systems. Air conditioning embraces more
than cooling. The definition of comfort air conditioning is “the process of treating air to
control simultaneously its temperature, humidity, cleanliness and distribution to meet the
comfort requirements of the occupants of the conditioned space” (Oye et al., 2020)
