INT. Apartament of the brothers. PM

A young man walks out of the shadow with one plate in each hand.
After displaying a sad and regretful facial expression he proceeds to
bring one of the plates back from where he took them.

Same apartament. Same time

The camera is focused on a cup with two toothbrushes in it. The young
man’s hand breaks the monotony of the shot and picks up a toothbrush.
As the camera tilts up we see the young man staring blankly at
himself in the mirror, with his toothbrush in his hand.

Same apartment. Same time

The young man is playing jenga on his own. Again the young man
dispels the monotony of the scene by taking down the jenga tower with
a deep, full of regret sigh and a slight push. The impact of the
jenga hitting the floor seems to be synchronized with a door opening
in the back of the room. Slightly scared, the young man walks up to
the door and opens it.

Big empty field with a grave.

Behind the door, there’s an ample field, with two brothers grieving
in front of a makeshift wooden cross grave. The bigger brother is
him, but from the past. The young man seems to be unnoticed by the
past version of himself.

OLDER BROTHER (MEMORY)

(in a soft, sad voice) They took care of us for as long as they
could, and they were the greatest parents we could’ve asked for. But
we are not alone, we have each other. You understand?

Small brother doesn’t say anything and leans into big brother head
first, with a face full of sadness.
The young man walks up to the front of the grave that is open and
empty and stares silently, only to be pushed into the grave by his
past self.

Initial apartment. Some time in the past.

The young man observes the past layout of the apartment and two
brothers playing jenga at the same table he was playing jenga alone.
The big brother pulls out a chocolate bar mid game, and gives it to
the smaller brother.

SMALL BROTHER (MEMORY)

(surprised) What? How did you get the money for this?

BIG BROTHER (MEMORY)

(regretfully) I didn’t… I stole it.

SMALL BROTHER (MEMORY)

(still surprised) But you said we were better than that, you said we
would work hard and…

BIG BROTHER (MEMORY)

(slightly annoyed) I know, I just… wanted to do something right for
ourselves for once. This world is cold and unfair, and I thought this
would make things bearable again.

The small brother sits quietly and offers the big brother an
empathetic smile. He splits the chocolate in half and gives one to
his brother. They both raise their chocolates and say “Cheers!”. The
present day big brother turns away with a sense of nostalgia and
walks through the hallway door, only to find himself back in the same
room, months later.

Same apartment, a few months later.

The past big brother is calculating taxes at a table. The small

brother walks in and smacks a big stack of cash on the table. The
past big brother is perplexed.

BIG BROTHER (MEMORY)

(alarmed) Where did you get this??

SMALL BROTHER (MEMORY)

(slightly frustrated) I’m not a genius, but it’s obvious you’re
struggling to pay our taxes, you’re working three jobs, and if I
can't drop out of school to help you, you leave me no choice. I stole
this money from someone, I'm not letting you carry all the weight
alone.

BIG BROTHER (MEMORY)

(angry, in despair) Do you not see what you’ve done? This isn’t
helping us, it is just putting us in danger.

SMALL BROTHER (MEMORY)

(aggressive) You said it yourself a while back, this world isn’t
fair, if we play nice we’ll end up in a ditch.

BIG BROTHER (MEMORY)

(even more aggressive) This is not who we are… we are not criminals!
We are not burglars! Throw this worthless garbage away, if we’re
gonna have money, it’s going to be earned fairly.

The small brother is on the verge of tears and visibly frustrated. He

picks up the stack of money and goes to the door.

SMALL BROTHER (MEMORY)

(frustrated but emotional) We deserve this, I know we do.

The small brother then proceeds to storm out the door, smashing it
shut behind him.

As the present big brother’s memory world starts shaking, he heads

towards the hallway door again, where he enters the same room but
with a different memory. There, the big brother prepares dinner for
the smaller brother. He hears a thud at the door. Careful, he opens
it, and finds his brother dead. He starts grieving. The big brother
from the present tries to run out of the room but enters the exact
same room with the exact same memory, over and over again. As he runs
he hears the promises he made to his brother that he will protect
him.
He falls down to his knees and starts apologizing frantically,
repeatedly. His small brother suddenly appears unharmed behind him.
The big brother, feeling his presence, avoids eye contact.

BIG BROTHER
I’m sorry...

SMALL BROTHER
What are you apologizing for? You and I both know you did the best
you could. You were a young, confused boy that had to take care of
his little brother. It was a lot.

4
The big brother raises his head, but avoids looking at his smaller
brother.

SMALL BROTHER
This world isn’t fair, and it was too much to handle for the both of
us. Don’t worry, the “me” that you miss so much hasn’t gone anywhere.
Perhaps I just took one last step from close to your heart, to within
it.

The big brother finally tries to look at his smaller brother, but he
is not there.

Int. of the same apartment, the present.

After some nice establishing shots the big brother can be seen
holding half a chocolate. The other half of the chocolate is placed
near a portrait of the smaller brother.

BIG BROTHER
Cheers.

With a nostalgic smile on his face, the big brother takes a big bite
out of his half of chocolate.

THE END
