OF STEEL IN COLUMN (BBS)
LCETED 16 February BAR BENDING SCHEDULE, QUANTITY SURVEY,
HOW TO CALCULATE THE QUANTITY
OF STEEL IN COLUMN (BBS)
EXAMPLE:
We have a column. The height of the column is 3 m and
having a cross-sectional area is 500 x 400 mm. Six bars are
going to use having a diameter of 16 mm. The diameter of
the stirrup is 8 mm and having a spacing @ 150 mm and
@200 mm at L/3 respectively.
GIVEN DATA:
Height = 3 meter
Cross section = 500 x 400 mm
No of vertical bars = 6 nos.
the diameter of the vertical bar = 16 mm.
Diameter of stirrup = 8 mm.
stirrups center to center spacing = @150 or @ 200 mm.
SOLUTION:
The calculation was to proceed into two steps.
Longitudinal bars calculation
Cutting length of stirrups
STEP 1: LONGITUDINAL BARS CALCULATION
Length of 1 Rod = H + Ld
H = Height
Ld = development length (50d)
Length of 1 Rod
= 3000mm + 50d (where d is dia of the bar)
= 3000 + 50(16)
= 3000 + 800
= 3800mm or 3.8m
Total length
The length one vertical bar is 3.8m. we have total bar six bars
= 6 x 3.8
Total length = 22.8 m bar of 16mm needed
STEP 2: CUTTING THE LENGTH OF RECTANGULAR
STIRRUPS
The cross-sectional area of the column is 500 mm x 400 mm
Take it has,
500mm is side A
400mm is side B
Minimum clear cover to the reinforcement: 15 mm to the bars
in slabs, 25 mm to bars in beams and columns. In large columns,
say 450 mm in thickness, the cover should be 40 mm.
SIDE A SIDE B
A =500 – 2 Side clear cover B =400 – 2 x Top & Bottom cover
A = 500 – 2 x clear cover B = 400 – 2 x clear cover
A = 500 – 2 x 40 B = 400 – 2 x 40
A = 500 – 80 B = 400 – 80
A = 420 mm B = 320 mm
NO OF STIRRUPS REQUIRED
As mentioned spacing @ 150 mm and @200 mm at L/3
respectively.
Formula = L/3 +1
L/3= 3000/3
=1000 mm or 1 m
NO OF STIRRUPS NEEDED IN TOP ZONE
=1000 / 150
= 6.67 nos say 7 nos
NO OF STIRRUPS NEEDED IN BOTTOM ZONE
=1000 / 150
= 6.67 nos say 7 nos
NO OF STIRRUPS NEEDED IN MID ZONE
= 1000/200
=5 nos
TOTAL STIRRUPS NEEDED = 7+5+7 =19 nos
Formula = 19 +1=20 nos
NO OF STIRRUPS REQUIRED = 20 nos
CUTTING LENGTH OF ONE STIRRUP
Formula:
Cutting Length of Stirrups = Perimeter of Shape + Total hook
length – Total Bend Length
LCETED TRIVIA
Perimeter Of Shape
Perimeter of Rectangle = 2 ( length + breadth)
Perimeter of Square = 4 x side length
Perimeter of circle or Circumference of Circle = 2πr = πd
(r= radius, d= Diameter of Circle)
Total hook Length
1 Hook length = 9d or 75mm
Total Bend Length
45° Bend length = 1d
90° Bend length = 2d
135° Bend length = 3d (Remember, d = Diameter of Bar)
Cutting Length of rectangular Stirrup = 2 ( length + breadth) +
2 numbers of hooks – 3 numbers of 90° bends – 2 numbers of 135°
bends
= 2(a+b) + 2(9d) – 3(2d) – 2 (3d)
= 2(500+400) + 2(9x8) – 3(2x8) – 2(3x8)
= 2(900) + 2(72) – 3(16) – 2(24)
= 1800 + 144 – 48 – 48
= 1848mm say as 1.84m
We have a total of 20 nos of stirrups, which are going to use,
Total length
= 20 x 1.84
= 36.8 m long 8 mm bar
CUTTING THE LENGTH OF RECTANGULAR STIRRUPS = 36.8 m
RESULT:
TOTAL LONGITUDINAL BARS (6 nos) = 22.8 m bar of 16mm
CUTTING THE LENGTH OF RECTANGULAR STIRRUPS =
36.8 m of 8mm

bar for 1 meter is = D2/162 To know more click this link
Bar Bending Schedule of Column |
Rectangular and Circular Column
The column is a verticle structural member which takes loads from the beam
and slab and transfers it to the foundation and finally to the soil. Bar bending
schedule of column means simply to calculate the quantity of steel rod used in
the column with withstand safely.
I have also written an article on Complete RCC column design Guide –
Numerical Example as per IS Code. Now let us move toward the calculation of
reinforcement of column.

Before the Bar Bending schedule of the column, I would like to tell you
some points to be remembered.

Step 5 – Calculate Cutting Length of Circular Stirrups
A) Bar Bending Schedule of Rectangular
Column
Before the Bar Bending schedule of the column, I would like
to tell you some points to be remembered.
1. We know the standard size of the steel bars is 12 meters. So, after that,
we have to add other rods if required more height of length.
2. Keep in mind that the steel rod should not be tied at the place where the
bending moment is high. Its means at the top or bottom of the column.
We should always prefer to lap the steel rod at the mid-span or nearly
mid-span of the column or any structure.
3. The lapping should be done in an alternate way of the steel rod.
4. Sufficient lapping should be provided as per IS code to maintain safe as
well as economical.
From the diagram,
Thickness of Slab = 125 mm
Thickness of Footing = 350 mm
Clear Height of floor = 3000 mm
Let, Column has 6 numbers of 20 mm dia bars
Development Length = 50d =50 x 20 = 1000 mm
8mm stirrups @ 150 mm C/C
Footing Clear Cover = 40 mm
Step 1 – Find the length of Vertical Bar
Formula,
Length of Vertical bar = Development length (Ld) + Depth of Footing + 2 x
Clear Floor Heights + 2 x Slab Thicknesses + Overlap Length – Bend Length
= (50×20) + 350 + (2×3000) + (2×125) – (2×20)
= 7560 mm = 7.560 meter
Here, Overlapping Length should not considered because the standard size of
steel rod is found to be 12 meter. But we require only 7.56 meter.
So,
Cutting length is equal to the total length of vertical bars calculated above.
If the steel rod were more than 12 meter then, overlapping length would be
added.
By the way lets see how to calculate the over lapping length of steel rod of
column.
Step 2 – Find out lapping
As we know that lapping length required is taken 50d = 50 * Diameter of the
bar = 50×20 = 1000 mm.
Keep in Mind
1. Never overlap bars in a column at the top & bottom.
2. Lapping should be done at alternate bars.
3. Top bars should be always lapped with bottom bars.
Step 3 – Cutting Length of Stirrups
Formula,
Cutting length of Stirrup = Perimeter of stirrup + Length of Hooks – Length of
Bends
Perimeter = 2 x {Length of Column – Clear Cover) + (Width of Column –
Clear)}
P = 2 x {(500– 25) + (300 – 25)}
P = 1500 mm
Length of Bends = 3 x (2 x 20) + 2 x (3 x 20) = 240 mm
Length of One Hook = 9d = 9 x 20 = 180 mm (As per IS)
Therefore,
Cutting length of Stirrup (L) = Perimeter of stirrup + Length of Hooks – Length
of Bends
(L) = 1500 mm + 180 mm – 240 mm
(L) = 1440 mm
Cutting length of Stirrup = 1440 mm
Step 4 – Number of Stirrups
Number of stirrups required = Total Length of Vertical bars/Spacing of
stirrups+ 1
Number of stirrups required = (7560/150) + 1
= 51.4 Number of stirrups Say, 52 Nos.
Step 5 – Bar Bending Schedule Table
S.N Diameter of Bar Numbers Cutting Length Total Length Total Weight
Vertical bar 20 mm 6 7.560 m 45.35 m 351.06 kg
Stirrups Bar 8 mm 52 1.44 m 74.88 m 92.74 kg
Use the formula to calculate the weight of the steel rod as I have told you in
Part-1 of the Bar Bending Schedule.
B) Bar Bending Schedule for Circular Column
Step 1 – Find the length of Vertical Bar
Given,
Diameter of column = 300 mm
Diameter of Main Rods = 20 mm
Diameter of stirrups = 8 mm
C/C of stirrups = 150 mm
Clear Span or Height of column above foundation = 3000 mm
Depth of Foundation = 350 mm Clear Cover of Footing = 40 mm
Formula,
Length of Vertical bar = Development length (Ld) + Depth of Footing + Height
of column + Overlap Length – Bend Length
= 50d + 350 + 3000 + 0 – 2d
= (50×20) + 350 + (3000) – (2×20)
= 4310 mm = 4.310 meter
Here, Overlapping Length should not considered because the standard size of
steel rod is found to be 12 meter. But we require only 4.310 meter.
So,
Cutting length is equal to the total length of vertical bars calculated above.
If the steel rod were more than 12 meter then, overlapping length would be
added.
By the way let’s see how to calculate the over lapping length of steel rod of
column.
So,
Weight of main rods = d2/162.25 x Length of Main bars
W1 = 3.14 x 202/162.25 x 4.310
W1 = 33.36 kg
Step 2 – Find out lapping
As we know that lapping length required is taken 50d = 50 * Diameter of the
bar = 50×20 = 1000 mm.
Step 3 – Find out no. of Stirrups.
Number of stirrups required = (Total length of verticle bar/Spacing of
stirrups) + 1
Number of stirrups required = (350+3000)/150 + 1
= 23.33 Number of stirrups Say, 24 Nos.
Step 4 – Calculate Cutting Length of Circular Stirrups
Formula,
Cutting length of one Circular Stirrup or Ring (L) = Circumference of Circular
Stirrup + Total Hook length – Total Bend Length
L = πD + (2 x 9d) – (2 x 3d)
Where, D = Diameter of Column – Clear cover – Clear cover = 300 – 25 – 25
= 250 mm, and d is diameter of stirrups.
So,
L = 3.14 x 250 + (2 x 9 x 8) – (2 x 3 x 8) = 881 mm
Hence,
Total Cutting length of Circular Stirrup or Ring = L x No. of Stirrups = 881 x 24
= 21144 mm = 21.144 meter
Step 5 – Calculate Cutting Length of Circular Stirrups
Total Weight of Stirrups = d2/162.25 x Length of Main bars
W2 = 3.14 x 82/162.25 x 21.144
W2 = 26.18 kg
S.N Diameter of Bar Numbers Cutting Length Total Length Total Weight
Vertical bar 20 mm 6 7.560 m 45.35 m 33.36 kg
Circular Stirrups 8 mm 24 0.881 m 21.144 m 26.18 kg
Total weight of steel rod used in circular column = 33.36 + 26.18 = 59.54 kg

BBS for Circular RCC Column:
This article is about How to prepare bar bending schedule for Column
To preparing bar bending schedule for a column. there are some criteria & assumptions
that require to be met Let’s get started.

Forces on Column:
you should know the normal forces action on a column.
Just look at the diagram that is given below:
If you see the shear force and bending moment diagram, the column has less moments
at center and more at bottom and top.
When bending moment is maximum not at any time tie a column at top & bottom every
rime tie the column at center.
At site tie the bars at the height of 4 to 5 feet. The height of roof should not be more
than 11 feet.
Use less cutting of steel and provide desirable lapping.
Lap another steels at same time.
Overlap the top steels with bottom steels.
Between the laps end to end spacing should be provided.
Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) used by:
Bar bending schedule is used by different kind of peoples and officials on construction
site which is given below:
Quantity surveyor
Steel fixer
Contractor
Project manager
Inspectors
Clerks of construction
In construction site all estimation and costing operation is the responsibilities of quantity
surveyor. The bar bending schedule gives the details to quantity surveyor for finding out
the number of steel its type, size and shape. Contractor are using bar bending schedule
(BBS) for ordering the steel bar for proceeding the construction. Steel fixer using bar
bending schedule (BBS) for doing their work or installing the bar in column, beam or
slab according to the bar bending schedule (BBS) that how much cut length or bending
of bar will be needed and which size of steel should be use. The inspector and clerks of
construction refers to the BBS to make are that the reinforcement work in the field is in
proper with the design reinforcement as per drawing.
BBS for Column:
Cross Section of Circular RCC Column
Detail of RCC Column
Details from the diagram:
Thickness of slab is150 mm
Floor height is 3 m or 3000 mm
Footing depth is 400 mm
Development Length is 50d
Column has 8 numbers of 16 mm dia bars
Stirrup spacing is 8mm @ 150 mm C/C
Concrete Cover of Footing is 40 mm
Concrete Cover of slab is 25 mm
Steps for BBS of Column:
Generally, there are five steps for preparing the bar bending schedule of column these
five is given below:
Find the length of Vertical Bar
Find out lapping
Cutting Length of Stirrups
Number of Stirrups
Bar Bending Schedule
Find the length of Vertical Bar:
Length of Vertical bar = Development length (Ld) + footing depth + Floor Heights
+ Slab Thicknesses + Overlap Length
= (12×16) +400+ (3000) +(150) +(50×16)
= 4734 mm or 4.73 m
Now we find the length of one vertical bar.
The total length of vertical bar = 4732 x number of steels in column
The total length of vertical bar = 4732 x 8
The total length of vertical bar = 37856 mm
Find out lapping:
length of lapping is 50d
Lapping length = 50 x Dia of steel
Length of lapping = 50×20 = 1000 mm.
We know that the length of typical steel is 12.25 m or 40 feet length
Total Length of Vertical Bar = 37.856 m that is more than 12.25 m or 40 feet so lapping
should be provided.
Length of lapping is 1000 mm the result will be 37856 + 1 = 38.856 m
It is mentioned already in this article, consider the points while lapping the bar. There is
no one right process we can use. Just remember the lines.
Don’t tie a column at bottom and also at top
Lap at another bars every time
Overlap top bars with bottom bars always
Cutting Length of Stirrups:
we already discussed cut length of stirrup in Bar bending schedule of beam article.
Length of One Hook = 9d
Cutting length of Stirrup = (Perimeter of stirrup – concrete cover) + Number of
Hooks
Cutting length of stirrup = (πd-cc) + (2 hooks)
Cutting length of stirrup = (3.14×450-25) +(2x9d)
= (1413-25) + (2×9×16)
= 1388 + 288
Cutting length of Stirrup = 1676 mm
Number of Stirrups:
Number of stirrups = (Total length of Column ÷ spacing of stirrups) +1
Number of stirrups = 4773 ÷ 150 + 1
Number of stirrups = 32.82 say 33 numbers
Bar Bending Schedule:
The bar bending schedule of column is shown below in table
S. No of Length unit weight of steel
