Hints for English-Vietnamese Translation

4.1 Some possible steps to apply the seven English basic sentence patterns in English-
Vietnamese translation.
When translating a sentence from Vietnamese into English, we can follow these steps:
Step 1: Read the Vietnamese sentence carefully to understand its meaning well
Step 2: Find out the main verb of that sentence and its English equivalent.
Step 3: Find the part (object, complement or adverbial) required by the main verb.
Step 4: Choose the suitable modifier of the object, complement or adverbial in the sentence if
there are any.
Step 5: Take the suitable basic sentence pattern of English based on the above details.
The following samples will illustrate these above steps:
1/ Trận động đất hôm 26/12/2004 đã cướp đi sinh mạng của 273000 người.
The main verb is: “cướp đi”. Its equivalent in English may be “kill”
- The verb “kill” is a transitive verb, it needs an object: “273000 people”
So we can see the suitable English sentence pattern of this sentence is: S V O [3]
The earthquake killed 273000 people.
“26/12/2004” is the modifier of the subject “the earthquake”
The earthquake on December 26th ,2004.
We can translate it as:
“ The earthquake on December 26th,2004 killed 273000 people”.
Suggested answer:
“The earthquake on Dec 26, 2004 claimed the lives of 273000 people”.

2/ Tổ chức y tế thế giới công nhận Việt Nam là quốc gia đầu tiên có thể kiểm soát được sự
lây lan của bệnh SARS trong phạm vi quốc gia.
The subject of this sentence is “Vietnam”
- The main verb is: “công nhận”
 The English equivalent is “recognize”.
- In this sentence, the verb “recognize” needs “an object” and “an objective complement”.
- The object is “Việt Nam” and the objective complement is “quốc gia đầu tiên – The first
country”.
The suitable sentence pattern: S V O C
- “có thể kiểm soát được sự lây lan của bệnh SARS trong phạm vi quốc gia.” Is the modifier of
the complement “the first country”.
Main verb of this modifier: “kiểm soát” à “control” is an transitive verb. So it needs an
object “sự lây lan của bệnh SARS”.
- We can translate the modifier as: “that can control the spread of SARS within its
border”.
- The full sentence is: “The WHO recognized Vietnam as the first country that can
control the spread of SARS within its border”
Or “The WHO recognized Vietnam as the first country to control the spread of SARS
within its border”
Suggested answer:
“The WHO recognized Vietnam as the first country to be able to control the spread of SARS
within its border.”

3/ Đình làng là ngôi nhà công cộng của cộng đồng làng xã Việt Nam.

The subject is “ Đình làng”

- The main verb is: “là” à “to be”
“To be” needs a complement: “ngôi nhà công cộng” à “common house”
The proper English sentence pattern: S V C
“của cộng đồng làng xã Việt Nam” is the modifier of the complement.
 We can translate this sentence as:
“The village Đinh is the common house of Vietnamese village commune”.
Suggested answer:
“Communal house is the common house of a Vietnamese village commune”
4/ Theo hiệp định thương mại Việt – Mỹ, Việt Nam có thể mở rộng sang thị trường sang Mỹ.
- “Theo hiệp định thương mại Việt – Mỹ” is the abverbial of this sentence.
- The subject of this sentence is “Việt Nam”
- The main verb is: “mở rộng” à the English equivalent is “expand”.
- In this sentence, the verb “expand” needs to be followed by an object and an adverb:
Object: “thị trường” à “its market”
Abverb: “sang Mỹ” à “to the US”
- The proper pattern: S V O A.
The full sentence is: “Under the Vietnamese – American trade agreement, Vietnam can
expand its market to the US”.
Suggested answer:
“According to the U.S -Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement, Vietnam can expand its market to
the US”.

5/ Những cải cách về kinh tế đã mang lại cho Việt Nam nhiều thành quả đáng kể.
The subject is “Những cải cách về kinh tế”
- The main verb is: “mang lại” à The English equivalent is “to bring”
- The verb “bring” needs 2 objects:
Nền kinh tế Việt Nam à “the economy of Vietnam”
Nhiều thành quả đáng kể à “remarkable achievements”
- The suitable pattern: S V O O.
- We can translate this sentence as:
“Economic reform has brought the economy of Vietnam remarkable achievements”.
Suggested answer:
 “Economic reform has brought remarkable achievements to Vietnam’s economy”.

6/ Lượng du khách đến Việt Nam tăng nhiều trong những năm gần đây.
The subject is “Lượng du khách”
- The main verb is: “tăng” à The English equivalent may be “rise”, “increase”
This type of verb is an intransitive verb, it does not need O or C.
The suitable pattern is S V.
- “đến Việt Nam” – “to Vietnam” is a modifier of the subject the number of tourists”.
We can translate this sentence as:
“The number of tourists to Vietnam has increased dramatically in the last few years”.
Suggested answer:
“The number of tourists visiting Vietnam has increased dramatically in the last few years”.
7/ Sáng nay, Ủy ban dân số gia đình và trẻ em tỉnh Đắc Lắc đã trao học bổng cho 147 trẻ em
nghèo hiếu học và học sinh giỏi trong tỉnh.
The subject is “Ủy ban dân số gia đình và trẻ em tỉnh Đắc Lắc”.
- The main verb is: “trao” à The English equivalent may be “give”, “offer”, “award”
- Two objects or one object and one adverb follow these verbs.
The suitable English sentence pattern: S V O O or S V O A.
We can translate this sentence in two ways:
S V O1 O2
O1: trẻ em nghèo hiếu học và học sinh giỏi à students who were disadvantaged and eager to learn
well and excellent ones.
O2: học bổng à scholarships.
Suggested answer:
