2. (C) Newtons
3. (A) in pairs
4. (A) friction
5. (C) 500 N
6. (C) gravitational
7. (D) Air resistance and gravitational forces
8. (A) Contact forces
9. (B) decrease
10. (A) 1 N , to the left
WHAT’S NEW
Activity 1. Effect of force on a ball
1. (A) Yes
2. (A) The ball has to be pushed or pulled
3. (A) The moves in the same direction as the force
4. (A) Exert a force opposite the motion of the ball
5. (A) The ball has to be pushes sideways
WHAT’S MORE
Activity 1. Forces on objects at rest
1. Is the block of wood at rest or in motion? The block of wood is at rest.
2. Refer to the figure below. Draw the forces acting on the block of wood. Use the dot as
the origin of the forces. Frictional, tension, normal and gravitational force.
Activity 2. Balance of forces
1. If two groups in the game are exerting equal and opposite forces on the rope will the
rope move? No, the rope will not move.
2. In the same condition, what happens to the net force acting on the rope? Zero net force.
3. What are the forces present on the rope? The tension force is present on the rope.
4. Refer to figure 19. If you place a ball on the floor then push it gently to one side, observe
the motion of the ball as it rolls down the floor.
a. What makes the ball stop rolling after some time? The friction makes the ball
stop rolling.
b. What are the forces that act on the ball? The forces that act on the ball are
frictional, normal, and gravitational.
Activity 3. Unbalance forces
1. If two groups in the game are exerting unequal and opposite forces on the grounds, will
the rope move? Yes, it will move.
2. Will the net be equal to zero? No, this time the net will not be equal to zero.
3. To what direction does the rope move? The rope will move to the right direction.
4. Are the forces acting on the chandelier unbalanced? No, it is not unbalanced
5. What force can cause the chandelier to fall? The force that can cause the chandelier to
fall is gravitational.
6. What type of force is your answer in number 4? The type of force is contact.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
Fill in the blanks with correct word/s. write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper
1. Any push or pulled is called force.
2. Magnitude refers to the size or strength of the force while direction points to where the
object goes. The direction of the arrowhead indicates the direction of the force. The
length of the arrow represents the amount of force (relative magnitude).
3. There are two types of forces, namely contact and non-contact.
4. Applied, friction, normal and tensional forces are examples of contact forces.
5. Gravitational and magnetic forces are examples of non-contact forces.
6. Balanced are forces that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.
7. Unbalanced are forces that cause a change in the motion of an object.
8. The sum of all forces acting in an object is called resultant force.
9. If the force in an object are balance, the net force is zero.
10. If the forces in an object are unbalanced the net force is not zero.
WHAT CAN I DO
Read and analyze each problem carefully. Write your answer and solutions in your
answer sheet.
1. Boys A and B, are pulling a heavy cabinet at the same time with 5 N of force each. What
is the net force acting on the cabinet?
F net=F A + F B
=5N+5N
= 10 N To the right
2. What if boy A and boy B pull the heavy cabinet at the same time in opposite directions
with 10 N and 5 N of force respectively,
a. What will be the net force on the cabinet?
F net=F A + F B
=(-10 N) + 5 N
= -5 N
b. Will the cabinet move? Yes
c. To what direction will it move? To the left side
3. From problem 2, suppose another boy, Boy C pulls the heavy cabinet with 5 N of force in
the same direction with boy A,
a. What will be the net force on the cabinet?
F net=F A + F B
= (-10 N -5 N) + 5N
= -15 N +5 N
= -10 N
b. Will the cabinet move? Yes
c. In what direction will the cabinet move? To the left side
ASSESSMENT
1. (B) Joules
2. (A) magnitude
3. (A) Friction
4. (B) Gravitational
5. (D) Concrete road
6. (B) Gravitational
7. (C) Normal
8. (A) 0 N
9. (A) increases
10. (B) 25 N, to the right
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
1. The wheelbarrow at rest containing stones has a force of 1000 N. A man exerted a push
of 500 N.
a. Will he able to move the wheelbarrow? The man would not be able to move the
wheelbarrow because, the force which he exerted is less than the force at which the
barrow is resting.
b. Suppose another man tried to help him and exerted a force of 500 N. will they able to
move the wheelbarrow? No, the force which both exerts on the wheelbarrow will be
equal to the force at which the wheelbarrow containing the stone is when at rest.
c. Another man saw their struggle in pushing the wheelbarrow. He tried to help them.
He exerted a force of 400 N. will the three of them move the wheelbarrow? Yes, the
three men would now be able to move the wheelbarrow since their total forces is
greater than the force of the wheelbarrow containing the stones.
2. A box is at rest and a force of 250 N is applied to it. If the frictional force is 200 N,
determined the net force.
F net=F A + F B
= (-200 N) + 250 N
= 50 N to the right s
