Final Exam Odd-Semester Year 2021/2022: Dept. of Mechanical Engineering Ftirs - Its

This document contains a 3 question final exam for a Basic Fluid Mechanics course. The first question asks students to calculate the force required to push snow based on given parameters of a snowplow truck's speed, plow dimensions, and snow properties. The second question involves determining dimensionless groups for a formula relating beam deflection to elastic modulus, load, and moment of inertia. The third question requires students to calculate the useful power used to circulate air given parameters of a fan, motor power, duct diameter, and inlet/outlet air velocities. Students must submit their answers in a single PDF file by 8:40 AM or their responses will not be considered.

FINAL EXAM ODD-SEMESTER YEAR 2021/2022

Course : Basic Fluid Mechanics I

Day / Date : Monday, 13 Desember 2021
Allocated time : 100 mins
Type : Open book exam
Dept. of Mechanical Lecturer : Prof. Tri Yogi Yuwono; Prof. Sutardi;
Engineering Prof. Herman Sasongko; Dr. Wawan Aries W.;
FTIRS - ITS Nur Ikhwan, ST., M.Eng.; Vivien S., Ph.D.

1. The figure below show a snowplow truck is moving with a speed of U = 20 km/hr. Snow is
dredged on a plow with a thickness of 8 cm and comes out of the plow at a 45 o angle. If the
35% width of the plow (perpendicular to the figure) is 120 cm and the density of snow is 160 kg/m 3,
then determine the force required to push the snow!

2. The end deflection  (m) of a tip-loaded cantilever beam of length L (m) is given by the formula

35%
Where E : modulus elasticity (N/m2), P : load (N), I : second moment inertia (m4)
a). What is the appropriate number of repeating parameters
b). Determine a set of dimensionless groups
c). State the functional relationship between the dimensionless groups

3. A fan is used as an exhaust fan, driven by a motor with a power of 0.6 kW. The wind speed on
the fan output side is 12 m/s through ducting with a diameter of 61 cm. Changes in air pressure
30% in and out of the fan can be negligible. Meanwhile, the air velocity when entering the fan can be
considered very low and negligible relative to the air velocity when leaving the fan.
a. Create an appropriate volume control for this analysis.
b. Calculate the useful or actual power used to flow or circulate air.
