YUMCC - SAFETY MINDSET
A safety mindset is always being aware
of what could injure you or your
coworker, cause an accident and doing
all you can to avert it even when
nobody is watching.

THE CORE SAFETY MINDSET
1. Safety always comes first
2. Accidents can be prevented
3. Work must be carefully planned and
carried out
4. What you do affects not just you but
everyone around you and beyond,
including your family

BEHAVIOURS THAT CAUSE
ACCIDENTS
1. Rushing
2. Frustration/Anger
3. Fatigue/Stress
4. Complacency

RUSHING
Pressure to complete tasks as quickly as possible to move
onto the next task or finish the day early.
Rushing increases the chances of not following the correct
safety steps to complete tasks.
Statistics has it that - workplace injuries increase during the
holiday season and Fridays as workers tend to deal with
more distractions than usual. Planning dinners, hosting
out-of-town family members, purchasing gifts and figuring
out the logistics of other festive activities can easily cause
people’s minds to wander.

FRUSTRATION/ANGER
People come to work angry at their spouse,
child or the person that just cut them off in
traffic
Having the right tools to manage frustration
and turn negatives into positives is key to
avoiding accidents and injuries.
Control your emotions – it’s an important
virtue.

FATIGUE/TIRED
Fatigue greatly reduces production and
performance.
A tired driver is said to be as dangerous on
the road as a drunk driver – this illustrates
fatigue's dangers.
When you are tired, you cannot focus as well,
you take shortcuts.
Take care of your health and rest well.

COMPLACENCY
Complacency can be the most dangerous behavior
that results in an injury or accident. A false belief
that experience makes you invulnerable leads to
accidents.
Accidents can happen to anybody at any time, and
one’s sense should always be finely tuned to each
situation’s risks.

Tips to help create your own SAFETY MINDSET:
AWARE: Pay attention. Know first then Prevent Next.
FOCUS: Concentrate on the task(s) at hand. Take good care of yourself. Getting plenty of rest and staying
alert may prevent accidents.
STRONG: Have the strength to do the right thing even when it's easier not to. Follow safety procedures.
Remind co-workers of safety precautions. Always follow safety policy.
PATIENCE: Take the time to do things correctly every time. There are no shortcuts to safety
RESPONSIBLE: Take responsibility for a safe work environment. If you see something out of place, pick it
up or alert someone who can help. Someone may fall on that item and become injured if you don’t. You
can’t ever assume that someone else will act – let it be you!
THINK: Stop to think before you act. Accidents are not the result of bad luck. Instead, they occur when
someone decides (consciously or not) to take a chance.
