To better understand what this particular method is, laboratory method utilizes raw data or material things
to produce better understanding of the subject matter or lesson. We learn by doing. In this method, we use
reality instead of symbols. What do we mean by this? When we say reality, it describes the actual thing.
For instance, when we do an experiment, we use our senses to observe, to interpret and to draw a
conclusion because reality has more vividness. Also, a laboratory method is investigatory and
experimental in nature.
In laboratory method, there are certain steps that should be followed, these are preparation, actual work
period, and culminating activities.
Preparation
In preparation, it provides motivation and orientation. In this particular step, there are factors that should
be taken into account.
a. Review of past lesson relevant to the present for apperception and motivation.
When we say apperception, it is the process of learning new information by relating and
incorporating it into past knowledge and experience. This is to ensure that students are well-
prepared and knowledgeable enough as they perform the work assigned to them by the teacher.
b. Raising and defining the work to be done
This is important because students should have a prior knowledge before, they do the actual work
so that they will be guided accordingly.
c. Expected learning outcomes
These defines the totality of information, knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values, skills,
competencies, or behaviors a learner should master upon the completion of the laboratory work.
d. Planning
This is where the teacher assigns the students or divides the task either individually or by group.
Actual Work Period
(read ppt)
An example of this would be when the teacher tasked the students to observe the cells during
meiotic and mitotic phase. The 1st group is assigned in prophase then the 2 nd group is the
metaphase and the 3rd group is the anaphase and so on and so forth.
If it is experimental of course it would take 2-3 days at most or if it a research, then it would take
months or even a year to complete.
These are the control variables. They should be limited from the start until the end of the
experimentation.
Culminating Activities
After working on the task, the teacher may assign the students to report and discuss their findings.
This is to make sure that all topics covered will be understood by the whole class. Also, if they
did an experiment, the teacher may assign the students to make a laboratory report which is
usually done after the experimentation.
After each report, there is an open forum. This is where questions, discussions, generalizations,
conclusions are made.
To continue the discussion, I will now pass the mic to Mr. Songalia
