Professional Statement

For the majority of my life I have been passionate about the overall health of all individuals. I have been
passionate about health, since the beginning of my high school career. I grew up playing sports and always staying
active, and when I started high school and began to play sports at a more competitive level, I realized how important it
was for me to eat well, take care of my mental health, and exercise. I was fortunate enough to take a health education class
in high school that discussed nutrition, so that gave me a baseline for my nutrition education. My curiosity led me to
continue to seek out more information about nutrition and overall wellness. I began to observe the eating habits of my
friends and family around me and realized that most people are not informed on nutrition. Over time I felt a desire to
discuss nutrition and wellness and decided that I wanted to pursue a career in the health field. I originally chose to pursue
a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, but after my first semester in college I decided to broaden my career opportunities and
changed my degree to Public Health. My overall goal in pursuing this major is discover how to help those around me
live a well-balanced and healthier life.

Throughout my time in college I have had the opportunity to volunteer my time and pursue an internship in the
public health field. I have volunteered at the organization, Feeding Northeast Florida. My time spent volunteering at this
organization has been educational and fulfilling. I sorted through donated items, such as food and toiletries, to later be
given away to individuals and families that needed these items the most. I also had the opportunity to work at Benefit
Advisors, a company that helped other companies purchase the right health insurance for themselves and their employees.
During this internship I learned about the ins and outs of selling insurance and how to communicate the different types of
insurance to clients. I helped put together informational fliers about different health topics that would later be presented to
clients. My goal for my internship is to gain experience working with individuals who need support, resources, and
information on how to live a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. I hope to build connections with the individuals I am serving
as well as my colleagues and fellow health professionals. I would also like to gain more experience planning and
implementing health programs for either individuals or groups of people.

Within the next year I will have graduated from college and would like to be starting my career in the
public health field. I want to work with young adults, female population, or individuals with special needs. I have also
become interested in helping individuals that are victims of human trafficking and individuals who are wanting to pursue
a healthier lifestyle. Looking at the public health competencies and code of ethics, there are some that correlate with my
short term goals. Pursuing health, safety, justice, and equity for all people are core values of the field of public health and
help to capture what I want to pursue not only in my career but in my everyday life.

My overall goal within the next five years is to gain experience working in my community as a community health
specialist and educating people of all ages on how to live a healthy lifestyle despite their circumstances. I also hope to be
an advocate and part of the change in ending human trafficking in my community. This is a health issue that impacts
individuals more than many could imagine. According to the competencies of public health professionals, public health
requires those in the field to be leaders who are respectful and willing to help people achieve a consistent level of health
compared to those around them. This aligns with my long term public health professional goals. I want to help people who
have been told to question their worth and help them discover their worth and eventually build a healthy life that they are
excited about living. Becoming a public health professional will not only benefit me, but it has the possibility to impact
other individuals and hopefully a whole community.
