Science and Technology
Although India was and is known as a land of Gods and Goddesses, India is today also recognised as
a major power in the field of science and technology. For example, some of the biggest technology
(or otherwise) companies are headed by Indians, some of the world’s top defence & space
technologies are developed either by India or with the help of India etc.
India’s journey in science and technology pre-dates its independence when three science academies
viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences
were setup between 1930 and 1935. Since then India’s tryst with Science has been carried forward
by almost all of its post-independence leaders, be it India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal
Nehru who initiated reforms to promote science in higher education institutes leading to the setup
of India’s first IIT, Indian Institute of Technology, at Kharagpur In West Bengal in 1951 or the current
Prime Minister of India Sh Narender Domadardas Modi who wishes to make India self-reliant in all
spheres of science and technology like defence, space, pharma, IT etc.
The setup of the first IIT in India was only the first stepping stone as soon it was followed by setting
up of many more such institutes like three more IITs, AIIMS, Dr Homi Jahangir Bhabha Atomic
research centre, DRDO, ISRO etc. The setup of such institutes of eminence coupled with the love
towards science of Indian people ensured and ensures rapid growth of science and technology in the
country with some very major milestones to its credit e.g. becoming a nuclear state by the year
1974, foray into space in 1975 by launching India’s first satellite “Aryabhatta”, the first country to
reach Mars in its first attempt, being called the “pharmacy of the world” due to excellent progress in
bio-technology, setting of heavy industries etc. Today, India’s ISRO is regarded as none less than
American space agency NASA.
With growing prowess in both economy and in the field of science and technology, India seems to be
destined to become a developed economy and super power in near future. And with its love for
Gods and Goddesses, India may become the perfect example for the world to follow in both the field
of “Science and Spirituality” – both being closest to be the basis of human life’s existence on our
beautiful planet called earth.
