Communicating Patriarchy
Name: Karla Giselle R. Santos
Reflect on this question: How do the following words communicate patriarchy? Provide your
thoughts on the space provided. (20 pts)
Phrase How does it communicate patriarchy?
Babae kase (babae man gud) This phrase is used as an exception when there are
things we describe to a woman, like "babae kase kaya
maingay," "babae kase kaya ganyan magmaneho," etc.
It also describes that there are some things that
women are unable to do, primarily because they are
perceived as weak, so they are expected to do light
jobs.
Lalake kase (lalaki man gud) Aside from using this phrase as an exception when
describing a man like "lalake kase kaya malakas" and
how they can do hard jobs, it is also used to justify a
man's misbehavior; for example, when a husband
cheats on his wife, people usually say "normal lang yan
kase lalake," or when you complain to your parents
about why it is acceptable for your brother to be messy
and not help clean the house, they will respond with
"lalake kase."
Haligi ng tahanan This phrase refers to the father of a family as a man
regarded as a stronger gender; he is the one who works
hard to provide for and fulfill the needs of his wife and
children. They are expected to lead, and as the family's
head, his decisions must be obeyed by the rest of the
family.
Ilaw ng tahanan This phrase emphasizes that a wife's primary role is to
maintain the bliss of home and family life. A mentality
in which a woman should keep up with household
responsibilities, such as leading her children, bringing
pleasure to her husband, and supporting his decisions.
